Weight loss surgery choices????

I chose a bypass because I had over 200lb to lose. All surgeries have their benefits and people can be successful with any of them but I knew that bypass showed the overall biggest percentage of loss because it stop absorption of some calories by bypassing part of the intestine plus you get a very tiny new stomach. Some people choose a bypass because you a can get dumping syndrome if you eat too much sugar and that acts as a deterrent but I've never had a sweet tooth so a bypass was more about how much I could lose and the fact it was permanent. I'm sure different people will have different reasons for choosing their type but one thing is to know the options so you can make a decision best suited for you, along with your surgeon of course :)

I chose a band due to a) cost b) bmi was 41 and so felt I'd not got as much to lose as some opting for likes of bypass c) I didn't want re routing/cutting/plumbing lol (this way my band can come out if I want to)

I was originally looking at the band as my BMI is 36 and having ruled out the balloon as it wasn't permanent enough, and the bypass as it seemed too drastic I thought the band was the only option. I then heard about the Wrap and am now hopong to have that done as it isn't as drastic surgery as bypass or sleeve, but is permanent, it's reversible like the band, but added bonus no little device inside to slip, no tube to pull and no fills needed. Seemed best option for me.

Pricewise though, the wrap is very pricy in the UK, so if you don't want to go abroad that will be a factor in your final decision.

it's reversible like the band

I don't want to disillusion you on that point, but for what I have seen about the wrap it is probably only reversible for a short period - maybe a year - and then there will be complications with the way the stomach may adhere to itself.

I can't imagine any reason I would want it reversed, but I think I'll take the advice of the qualified experienced bariatric surgeons over a career disillusionist on an internet forum anyday. So unless you can provide proof of your expert bariatric surgical credentials Muttley, I would suggest you stick to just posting to give people supportive and constructive advice based on your own experience not negative unsubstantiatable opinions.

Wow... That was an aggressive reply... Not sure that was called for.

OP, I chose the band because my BMI was relatively low. The cost was also less and I also didn't want my insides being rearranged. I liked that the band can be removed or loosed if for example I get pregnant or need to eat more for medical reasons. I think for my eating style, as a grazer, a bypass might have been better but so far I find that the band has curbed my impulse to snack anyway so yay :) there's also no dumping which can be a pro or a con. I do have to have fills. They're included in my package for a while but eventually I will have to pay for them which can get pricy but it shouldn't be very often anyway.
I can't think of anything else :)

History Thump, since I joined the forum this guy has posted after nearly everyone of my posts dissing my experience or putting a negative to everything I say. I'm close to reporting him!

I love to hear about people who's banding has worked for them, but the info I have read and gained from the surgeons has veered me towards the wrap.

If you have 'history' surely its better to sort it out via private message rather than on here

To the original poster who asked why we chose a band over the other options, when I had my band there was only the option of bypass or band. The sleeve was around but mostly as a pre bypass op. My BMI was 38 (I think) and I was a volume eater.

As soon as my band was fitted my portions decreased so much and I lost a large chunk of my weight quickly and before my first fill.

Its not for everyone but if you are prepared to work with it, it will work for you :D

I chose my band because 1. Less invasive than bypass/sleeve, 2. more permanent than balloon, 3. Price. I was a grazer, sweet and volume eater, and I am so happy with my weight loss and how the band has fitted in with my lifestyle. Definitely the right choice for me. Just do plenty of research to find out what will suit you. Good luck :)

Thanks everyone for taking the effort to reply! My BMI is 40.2 but, am a little concerned that quite a bit of my weight problem is down to too much alcohol (as well as a love of crusty bread) I have done every diet known to man and was 9 stone lighter 25 years ago when I got married but even then I was on Tenuate Dosphan pills and was climbing the walls and cleaning my house at 2am in the morning!!! I can't live like this any more as I am not living my life the way I should!!!!

Thanks for sharing a bit about you, I see you have CD'd in the past too - many of us have too.

Bread is not easy to eat with a band (crusty especialy), my post op advice was its best to avoid it, also rice and pasta. Rice and pasta were my problem foods, I havent touched them now for over 3 years and dont miss them.

As I'm sure you are aware there are a lot of calories in alcohol, so any diet could require you to cut down to lose. Alcohol is a no no for a year for some bypassers - being bypassed also changes how your body treats the alcohol. Im not sure about sleevers but as a bander I was told you can partake but be aware of the calories - switch to lower cal options if you are going out for instance.

Good luck with your choice but if you need to know anything else you know where we all are xx

I had intended to do the wrap even though I wanted the bypass. Mainly because I'm a chicken but I had a lot of weight to lose. Ended up with the sleeve and it was the best choice for me.

Hi
I plan to have the sleeve. My consultant said they prefer doing sleeves and bypasses due to failure rate of weight gain on bands...

Thanks x

Whatever operation we choose its all for the same reason, we couldn't stop shovelling food into our gobs and needed to take drastic measures. We all want the same goal, to get down to a healthy weight.

Hi I looked into all of the options because all of the guys on here have had amazing results whether it was a band, wrap, sleeve or bypass. There is no best op just the one that suits you the best. If you are an overeater who can't get full a band is fine cos it works on restriction. But if you are an emotional eater who hits the chocolate you can 'slide' this by the band and a bypass will make you dump if you eat too much sugar. You really need to read up on each op and have a really honest think about what your food demons are. I'm not ignoring the sleeve and wrap because the guys who have had them have had unbelievable results. Personally I'm going for a bypass because my surgeon believes it will give me my very best chance of beating my diabetes but ultimately I did the research and asked the experts. Luckily we were thinking on the same lines. I'm sure you will make the best choice for you and be ad sucessful as some of the inspirational guys here. I can't wait to join them on the losers bench xxx

i researched all the different options and decided i would like a bypass as i have a sweet tooth, and the specialist agreed this would be best for me.

Band or Wrap

I haven't had my surgery yet but am scheduled for it this month. I started my search with the band in mind, later learned of the wrap and became confused as to which would be the best choice. I still doubt whether the wrap wouldn't be better but I guess I'm sticking to my original plan, the band, for the following reasons:

(1) REFERENCES: My family member who is(was) very similar to me in eating habits has had a very good experience with the band.
(2) RISK: It seems to be the least invasive of the options and given that my BMI is under 40, and that I am a bit of a chicken for a more serious operation, I felt the band was what I should try.
(3) PRICE: I was able to book WLS for a reasonable price. If I hadn't, then I don't think I would have opted to pay so many thousands for an implant that might require removal down the road, possibly having to pay additional thousands for its removal.

Reason number 1 is the main one.

I am due to have a sleeve done. Originally I did want the wrap as I felt the sleeve was a bit drastic, but then when I realised that by having the sleeve, the hormone that controls the hunger part is considerably less after a sleeve, that made up my mind, as my problem is i have a large appetite!
