Weight Loss Surgery For Dummies is it worth buying?

Hey Hun, didn't want to read and run.. i've heard a few people mention the book but i havent come across it as of yet.. i'm sure someone on here has heard of it, or knows more about this topic than me! Good Luck! Marie x

Hi Ginger,I found it very good.If you want to see mine send your address and I will post it to you, read it then post it back.I have another great little book,Gastric Bypass Surgery by Mary P.Mc Gowan md.Maz x

It's ok for some general information but very American.

I found WLS for Dummies a very useful book in parts. I look at it every now and again. Most wls surgery books I've come across (on Amazon) tend to be American. I have the 2 Carnie Wilson books Gut Feelings and I'm still hungry (great easy reads, full of humour).

My sister bought me a book off Amazon called Life after Gastric Bypass co-authored by a wls surgery patient (Jerry Wayne) and Dietician/Exercise specialist (Katrina Seagrave). It's also useful in parts. However, with hindsight, I wouldn't go buying so many books as the information tends to be the same. The patient stories change but if you want to read patient stories you could always do that online.

Hi ... I haven't had surgery yet, but I think the amount of information and advice which ppl offer on here far out weighs anything the books can provide. It's more practical as well, from real experiences. I just love this place, it really spurs me on and helps me stay motivated and believe me I need it. Thank you every1

Hiya

I have a copy of the Emotional First Aid Kit all about WLS - thats quite good and also the Susan Maria Leach biography which actually annoyed me as all she does is talk about all the food she could eat whilst losing weight - but it does have good recipes.

Hi,
I have borrowed a copy from the local library, to see if its any good before I buy a copy. Only got it yesterday so not sure how good it is.
But worth asking your library if they have a copy (they can also request it from another branch)

Can I ask why the American version does not apply to you guys?

Apart from the process of getting the surgery, I wouldn't have thought it would be that different.

(((hugs)))
I think it's because a lot of the book is relevant to getting a health insurer to agree to WLS - which is not really relevant to the UK because we have to deal with the NHS or fund it directly ourselves. (Although I suppose that some of the info - like sample appeal letters - could be a useful starting point if you are appealing a funding refusal)

The recipes look quite good but are obviously use American brands which are not available here (also they use US terminology and weights and measures which lots of people here (like me!) really don't like using at all)

Finally, this doesn't apply to me because I am hoping/waiting for a bypass, but if you are a bander there is not a load of infrmation about gastric bands because, apparently, that is not a common procedure in the US at all.

However, I think that it does have a lot of good information, and I can see myself using it quite a lot as I travel along my journey.

(It is not that expensive to buy off Amazon.co.uk if you fancy it)

love

TillyBob
