What food & drink is a no no

What foods and drinks have you found to be a definate no no after both bypass and banding?

Post bypass - limit on high sugar foods. Can tolerate 3 small squares of chocolate, no more. Simple carbohydrates such as white bread/pizza dough can be a problem in large quantities, can manage 1 slice white bread for example. This is cos they break down to sugar which causes dumping syndrome.

That's all for me :) Nothing else I can't eat or drink.

I have been told that there are many food s you carnt eat anymore and that you cannot drink cola or booze and was just wondering if this was true.

Hi
Regarding coke and alcohol, you'll find that different surgeons advise different things. I was told fizzy drinks were not a problem as long as they were defizzed as much as possible and obviously were the diet versions. Ditto with alcohol really. I tend to stick to spirits with a low cal mixer (vodka and diet coke) but have had the odd wine and pint of lager with no ill effects. I wouldn't touch an alcopop for love nor money though these days!
Food - Same as what is said above really. Bread can be a bit much and I haven't had a cake/chocolate since before my op but that's mainly because I'm too scared. Plenty of others manage without any problems at all.
Hope this helps!

The only probs I have had is with Vegatables they just have to come back up unless they are blended in to soup. I have eat loads of differant things from Cake to crisps (small bits) with no ill effects. I have had no probs with bread but I only have brown or seeded now not had white since op, and I havent dumped yet. And when I have a drink I stick to vodka

thanks for all the replys hopefully i will be ok if i get the go ahead as i dont eat bread, chocolate or cakes normally its just that if i get a craving i have to eat the whole box, as for drinking i normally drink alcopops or vodka and coke so the only change i will have to make is no alcopops and stop the cravings, Can you eat pasta has i could live on that stuff

Im a bypasser and I can eat Pasta - problem is that it doesnt taste right anymore but I am assured that in time, my taste buds will go back to normal. Regarding fizzy drinks - we were told categorically that NONE should be consumed, even if they are allowed to go flat - bloats you out, stretches the pouch and makes you feel generally vile. Regarding booze - they say that you should have your first drink post op at home as the alcohol is absorbed so much faster post surgery that half a drink could send you completely doolally! Basically you become a very cheap date - eat virtually nothing and one drink is enough!

Just wanted to say that this is a very individual question to ask which is why the answers vary so much. Some people post-bypass have a very low tolerance to sugars and fats so they will dump if they risk it, others will find problems with veg, meat and fresh fruit for a bit. I have been told that most of the sensitivity will disipate over time bringing you back to a more 'normal' state in a couple of years. I was told not to eat empty calories (junk foods like candy/crisps), limit alcohol & stay away from fizzy pop as much as possible to help me lose weight and keep my pouch small. It is all a choice really about how you want to live post-op. I also steer clear of simple carbs (white bread/rice/pasta/potatoes) most of the time as a way to keep my weight coming off at a steady rate. Again this is a choice but I don't seriuosly eliminate any foods I enjoy, I just limit certain ones so that I have a healthy diet most days. That way when I want something I can have it and not feel guilty, I just remember that it can never become how I eat every day.

See this is one thing that confuses me about the band. The majority of the things you can't eat are healthy meal components. Lean protein like chicken and fish, complex carbs like wholemeal pasta/brown rice, and veg are what most nutritionalists advocate as a healthy diet not just for weight loss but for long term.

What does that leave you to eat? Red meat (bad for your bowels/heart), and slider food like crisps etc.

Am not attacking the band, it's an individual choice, I just don't get how not being able to eat all those good things is healthy.

i have probs with eggs, they make me want to vomit now (didnt before the op), rice ,noodles both continue to swell in the stomach (remember the stomach pouch is very small) im ok with pasta, bread can only manage half a slice of the small half size slices of wholemeal. Not tried crisps or chocolate and don't have any plans to try them. xxx

Depends on the cut of meat, but sometimes your just chewing and chewing. Have found a decent butcher now. Can't eat chips, bread, crisps, anything doughy.
Not had a pizza(hut) since before surgery. Make our own pizzas using wraps now. oh and liquorice, tried the other week for the first time, pain!!. Think sometimes its the spices that do it for me. And jelly, would have thought jelly but no.

I tried a piece of melon last night and boy did I suffer, had a couple of spoonfuls of hubbies Rogan Josh wizzed up and that made me sore for a while after so looks like spices may be off the menu for a while too, was worth it though, tasted divine.
