WLS advertised & Publicised

I dont half feel thatevery magazine paper or tv station i turn on lately there is something about gastric bypasses or bands
its as if the media are making it out to be a fashionable as jennifer annistons hair style.
I just think with all this hype at the moment it is going to be harder (for me anyway) to explain to people that it is a serious operation that i have had to take agreta deal of thought over and not just read that so and so has had it and lost 4 stone so whey hey I am having it.
I am hoping that the publicity will die down soon.
xx

Have to say I totally agree with you. When I first told close friends their reaction was "why" when I explained how ill I felt with the sleep apnea and the long term risks with that and high blood pressure they do take this on board and understand but I am sure the people I work with and my friends further down the chain would not be so understandable. To me it is a personal operation if I had a op for womens problems I would not tell them so why the need to tell all for this. The media know that there is money to be made out of talking about this, every over weight person loves to read a success story and it sells papers and magazines. Fern Britton kind of brought WLS out to be special if you know what I mean so lets blame her lol....xx

it also serves the purpose of highlighting that as a growing obese nation there are methods to deal with it, as the gov't keep saying we need to get on top of it and turn it around, maybe they should make it easier for people to get NHS funding and less time waiting for the op....

Hi
Im booked in for a band on 10 March and have only told 4 family members
I am not telling any friends or aquantancies until after had it done, Im also thinking about not telling my 2 kids 13 and 12 as I dont want them to get upset and worry, Im thinking of just saying im going to see a friend for a couple of days amd their grandparents are coming to stay as Im a single parent widower
I have made the decision to have this done over a number of years now and have tried every diet known to man over the last 20 years I most recently did 4 weeks onVLCD Lighter Life but it was then energy levels that made me come off it
I was going to gym to do spin class and cardio with no energy it was like running on empty tank
I not only want to lose weight but improve my fitness
I am just under 18st with BMI of 37 and reasonably fit I just cant seem to lose weight and maintain it
I dont want to be 12 stone 4 as BMI says is my ideal weight for 5ft10 but would be extactic to get down to 14 and heres the important thing MAINTAIN IT
LAst year I did a charity bike ride from London to Paris in aid of ACtion Medical research and it was 300 miles in 4 days which was great but although I love cycling at 18st its the hills that kill me
Cheers

James

I know what you mean james, I have only told my mum and my hubby. My kids 6 4 and 15 months wil know nothingother than teh fact that tehy will have a super slim mum soon (hopefully)
I am not telling friends as they just wont understand and probably there will be jelousy and *****ing - thats what my friends are like !!!
I am hoping I will get away with it
They know i have a weight prob obvioulsy I was 20 stone 5 only a year agpo, I am now 18 8 and try hard I am on xenical and also go to the gym 3 -5 times a week
so I will try my best to bluff harder at gym and better choices of food.
I dont know if it will work but I think it is better than having a playground of 200 people knowing my insides better than me,
xx

I am one of those people who told almost everyone, but only cos i'm a bad liar and would slip up eventually and was worried that people would think i'm ashamed of it and i'm not.

When I told people, I found that if I mentioned the BAND, people were, wow I'm so jealous!!

If I mentioned the BYPASS, people were..don't be so stupid.

I think it works both ways, yes the media has almost glamourised the band, but when the bypass is shown, it only ever shows people who weigh over 30 stone and can barely leave the house.

So for someone like me who was 19 stone but carried it quite well, many people think I'm stupid for being so drastic, but once I explain why I chose the bypass and the financial aspects of keeping up with the band ( I paid privately) they understand.

I almost feel on a mission to make people understand what the bypass is and why people would choose it over a band and vice versa

Lisa i fully understand where your coming from, i too am not good a lying so i told those that needed to know, ie work, family and close friends. The family and friends all know i have sruggled with my weight for years and work understand the implications of me losing weight and being fitter.

I agree the bypass is not portrayed other then in the extremes, i had a BMI of 50 when i started on my last diet before the bypass, but i was considerably lower by the time i had it last month. I have had 'some' negative comments about being drastic and i should diet to lose weight ect but these have ALL been from people who do not understand the concept of 'diet'

I told, & still do, tell everyone about my gastric bypass. But that is a personal choice.

Whether you decide to tell & who you tell is entirely YOUR choice, as is the operation. And you don't owe an explanation or justification to anybody!!
