I've had problems with my periods for quite a few years now. They've been regular for about 2 years, but it's like I have two good months then one really bad, literally like my insides are falling out (sorry!) like today! I took the day off work as when it's that bad I daren't go out anywhere, and as soon as it starts I have to start taking 9 tablets a day to help control them.

Has anyones periods improved after surgery?

I'm hoping thats one benefit I'll definitely have, fingers crossed!

Hi Karen

Weight loss can indeed level out hormone problems but if your periods are regular but they are painful and/or heavy this might not be connected to your weight?!

mine have been worse since losing weight. I had to have a scan on my womb and ovaries last week to check for fibroids xx

I have got a marena coil so dont usually have periods, but since my band fill and losing weight very quickly i have had a period which was out of the blue and lasted 8 days, so i think Maz is right, it might all be connected to weightloss, I hope things improve for you x

Go and see your GP and they will be able to help. Mine were heavy and I also go the marina coil and they have nearly stopped now.I used to take trans something acid pills that helped my bleeding each month.

I also have a myrena fitted (had it fitted because of heavy periods) and had settled down to a period every 4 weeks. Since the op I have been on a continuous period (albeit light)

The surgery definately does something with your hormones but I think it's hit and miss whether it works out good or bad.

I've had terrible periods for years & have been back & forth to the gynae for years too....they are useless, I swear if blokes had periods there would be more effective treatments than there currently are for bad periods. I've been on countless types of contraceptive pills, injections, Mirena coil (twice), medication (tranexamic acid which is supposed to reduce your bleeding...yeah right) & everything makes me bleed all the time with no break. Anyway, nearly 6 wks post-op so it's too early to tell yet, although I've already had 2 periods in that time....but I am quietly hoping things down below will slowly improve in time!

hello there,

well before I had my bypass,my periods where really bad,
So much I was anaemic.
Before my operation was done,the consultant at the hospital where I was having my operation done,advised in the interest of my health.
I should have a mirena coil fitted to control bleeding.
As without this,after the operation I would become more ill.

Ive also got the mirena coil and was really enjoying having little or no periods......alas since the op Ive had 2 periods in 6 weeks grrrrr!! Hopefully it will settle down when my body adjusts.....(dotty crosses her fingers) I had tranexamic acid tablets for months too and they were a waste of time! X

I took mefenamic acid which also had no effect! but I had a full hysterectomy in April so all problems solved - who would be a woman eh? x

Thanks guys - sound like it's going to be a 'suck it and see' situation as to whether they'll be better or worse! lol
I take tranexamic and mefenamic together, and with the cocodamol and ibuprofen for my back pain I'm sure I'll start rattling soon.
It's only 1 in 3 that are really bad, so the next bad one's due a week before my op.
The gynea doc I saw discussed the coil with me after I'd had a pretty bad miscarriage about 5 years ago but we've lived in hope that I may get pregnant again so decided against that option. (5 years of fun trying but no success lol!!).
I'll just have to wait and see what happens.
