Hi
This is my first post.
I am now getting closer to my op. In may I have a group session to discuss my options, then a week later I meet the team and have a pre-op assessment.
Does anyone know what sort of time scale it would be from then to surgery. Going a bit crazy trying to plan things, although excited too.
Any info encouragement about Taunton musgrove park would be great too.
Thanks :D

Hi Tea Towel

Everyone is different, and every hospital/centre is different on time scales.

With me, I had my:
Referral:1st November 2011
Food diary/questionaire: handed in by 16th November 2011
Consultation and team meet: 6th January 2011
Pre op on the 24th March 2012
Pre op diet (doing it now) 3rd March 2012 for 2 weeks
Surgery: 17th April 2012

But im down at St Richards Hospital in Chichester.

Hi Tea Towel. I had my education session at Taunton on 21st March and have my MDT appointment and pre-op next Weds.

At the education session they advised that the operation will four to six weeks after the pre-op, provided the team all agree that you are suitable for surgery. From what I have read from others who have been done there, they notify you the next day if all is OK to go ahead.

This is a link to Musgrove Parks bariatric services website. It gives good info about them and the liver shrinking diet they prefer.

Good luck with your journey.

Hi Tea Towel,

Taunton advise that it is about 4-6 weeks from the date of your pre-op to the date of the op. I have my pre-op there this week.

Hi lornabatt

That is really helpful to know, thank you.
My group meeting is 2nd may and my pre-op is the 9th.
Did you go to the group session? What was it like?
Sorry sooo many questions I have.
Good luck for your pre-op this week. I would love to hear how you get on. What surgery are you planning on having?
?

The group session was OK. They didn't tell me anything I didn't already know, but that just gave me confidence that I have done my research. I took my husband and I think he found it helpful!

I plan on having RNY. I will let you know how the appointment on Weds goes.

At the group session did they say how long they like to keep you in and time of work for the bypass?
Sorry some questions as it seems to differ round the country...

Usually 2 or 3 nights and op usually 2-3 hours. Some hospitals use anasal gastric tube and have a swallow test the next day and some do the swallow test while in op theatre when they have finished. All hospitals vary, I had no drain no nasal tube and swallow test in theatre with op, went in Friday afternoon cam ehome Monday luchtime no problems. Good luck xx

Thank you chrisa for your reply.
Did you have your op at Taunton? I would like as few a drains and tubes as possible- call me a wimp!

How long is it until you return to work? Tricky not being able to plan any little holidays etc for the summer..

Hi lornabatt

Thanks for your info and the link. I am hoping I can slimfast it but too be honest I haven't given the diet side so much thought yet. Just want to see them and make it real.
My group session is the 2nd may and my pre-op exactly a week after on the 9th. I was worried when I looked at the flo chart which said after the pre-op you then go on another waiting list. 4-6 weeks after is really great so it should be june sometime for me.
So you are hoping to get a date this week then? How exciting.
Xxx

Hi Tea Towel, I typed up a full report up about last Weds. It never appeared. That's the third post I have had done that didn't get posted up for unknown reasons. None of them contravened guidelines! I emilaed the site about it, but got no response to that either.

Feeling decidedly unwanted and don't expect this to successful post either!

:(

mmm, that one worked! Random. Here is a copy of what I tried to post last Thursday.

A very long appointment indeed!

I saw 1. Anesthetics nurse 2. The anaethetist (even spell check can't get this word right!) 3. nurse for blood tests 4. another nurse for ECG 5. Dietitian 6. Specialist nurse. The appointment lasted 3.5 hours in total, and whilst I was exhausted at the end of it, it seemed quickly. All the people I came into contact with were, nice, helpful and respectful. I felt very comfortable there, not at all anxious about the process.

I was really pleased that they did not give me information, about the operation itself, that I did not already know. This makes me feel quite confident that I have researched this well and am making the right decision based on all the known stuff about the operation and more importantly life after it. They don't make the final decision until they meet as team tomorrow to discuss your case, but each specialist advised me there should be no issues.

Mr Mahon advised that I should not need more than a few weeks of work but to be aware that I would not be running on full power for a bit. They said it would happen about the middle to the end of June and that I would get a months notice.

On a personal level, when I was sat in the waiting room after seeing Mr Mahon, I almost burst into tears. The reality that, finally, it was going to happen hit me. I am scared, but in a good way. Can't wait to get my letter with the date!

Oh lornabatt

Thank you for doing that. I admit I have been hoping to hear about, but how frustrating for you. :(

Is your Internet connection ok? Maybe worth copying your posts so you can paste if it doesn't work...

Hope it went well xx

Well, I tried to post it again this morning after having success with my reply to you and got the message again to say that it would appear after being looked at by a moderator and once again it is not here. I know it doesn't contain anything to contravene guidelines so am most confused!

Ok that's weird. I added you to a friend so I could give you my details but havent sussed out how to message yet. Let's hope the moderator posts it later. Thanks for trying tho! Grrr
I wonder what words flagged up for it to be moderated. Have you got a date though? X
