please help if you can

Hi Natalie
Sorry i can't help i've just had a bypass done privately but wanted to stop by and say welcome to minis. This is a great site full of friendly people with great advice and support and as Mini says someone will be along soon with some answers for you. Good luck with your journey xx

Hi Natalie, welcome to minis. Can't help regarding NHS banding as I had mine done privately but lots of banders on here and they will help you I'm sure. Anyway just wanted to say hi.

Hi natalie and welcome to minis - the only person that will be able to say you can have the band is the surgeon or his team. Normally the initial appointment is to explain the procedures and to see whether you meet the criteria set by your pct. If you meet this the person you see will make a decission whether you are suitable for a band and then apply for funding and give you a date for the pre op tests, after these are done you should be given a date.

Every area and PCT are different and follow different procedures and have differing criterias have a look on the BOSPA website to find out what your local criteria is.

Can't help with ya question - just wanted to say welcome & good luck

Where do you live? And what PCT (Primary Care Trust) is that????

Thankyou all for being so nice and helping me with my question, im just hoping to get this gastric band as ive tried so many things, and its getting me so down and i dont wanna be like that around my son, my confidence is so low, i dont really go out and i dont want my son to suffer because of it. but hopefully things will change :)
thankyou all for making me feel welcome and i will stay in touch!!

natalie xx

Normally the first appointment is a group session where the procedure will be explained along with the risks of the operation etc. Its about giving you the information you need to make an informed choice about weight loss surgery.

Then you will get an appointment with a specialist nurse who will check your psychological suitability for WLS. If they feel you are ready to do your part in making the operation a success, they will put you forward for a medical assessment and surgery.

This is how it was in my area. Good luck with it

Hi Natalie and welcome. There is always excellent advice to be had here, my best advice to you is to lurk around here. You will learn so much about the proceedures and what you need to do to make wls work for you.

The best advice i can give to you is to be honest at your appointment, even about your eating habits. This is not so easy i know but to get the proceedure that is going to give you the life you want with your son you sooo need to do this. Then listen to what suggestions the professionals can give you, they may think a sleeve or bypass is better. Just keep an open mind hun, don't worry it will go okay xx

Thankyou julie, jay and karlos for that, its nice to talk to people that have the same kind of issues as me!!

thanks again

Natalie xx

Morning hun!! If you don't mind me asking, what kinds of foods do you eat and would you say are your weaknesses? I'm asking as when I started researching the band on this website I was given lots of extremely useful advice. I originally wanted the band but as I am a sweet eater and drink lots of coke (I should buy shares in the company!!!) I soon realised that a bypass would be more successful for me. The band is more suitable for volume eaters of things like pasta etc apparently.

You may have done all of your research and are now 100% on your choice. I would definitely agree with one of the other posts and say have an open mind to the various ops. Personally I would hate to have to go through all this pain and not get the best results in the end!!

Good luck!!

Hi Natalie welcome to minis , every hsopital seems to do things differently . All the things i expected to happen at my first appointment didnt , i went in expecting a band came out being told id be best having a bypass, thought id be in a group meeting and it was just me and a dr, thought id be given loads of information about when and where it would happen got a sheet of paper to hand in at the desk lol so take it as it comes i wish id have had more time on this part of minis before my appointment as id have asked so many more questions. So my advice for you is to keep having a nosey on here jot things down and have an open mind, listen to what the dr says they do have your interests at heart and to ask as many questions you can x good luck with it all take care

Thanks everyone, meggie well i would say im not really a sweet person, i eat lots of savory foods but i do drink lots of coke, bad i no lol! erm i dont really know what my weakness is cos i like all food, there isnt really one that im mad about! i will have to look up the other options as i only really knew about the gastric band, im not to sure if the consultant will go through these with me cos its my first appointment and i dont really know what happens when i see him, but i will keep you all posted on how i get on!!

thanks again

Natalie xx

If it is like my first appointment (group one) then they take you through the ins and outs of the band, bypass and sleeve. They tell you the good and the bad so you can be nice and informed!!! Your hospital might be different tho!!
