B12 - Important Notice

My friend went to the gp yesterday (she is 16 months post bypass) and he insisted she had a B12 injection even though her bloods were fine. When she questioned it he said ''Your levels are fine now but when they run down it is really really hard to build them up again''.....

Just for those of you who think they're levels are okay! This information had recently been circulated to the practice apparently...

Hope you find it informative xx

I really need to find out when my last one was!

The whole point is folks that although my friends levels were good the advice is to still have it....

It's the same principal as when the petrol is cheap, you don't need it but you fill your tank anyway xx

Very different to my GP's practice. My B12 are perfect and I enquired about having a shot regardless just in case and the GP said that it was not necessary. She said it was like servicing a car that was just serviced last week.

Well my gp is pretty up to date with wls, he is a big fan so i'll be following his advice in 3 months when i need a shot, well actually i won't NEED it but i'll have it so that i dont' get to the point where i do need it :) xx

thanks for this

Thanks just reminded me I need to call and book my 2nd jab for the middle of the month, I haven't had any bloods taken since I left hospital in march but was told I would need the b12 regardless as I have problems with anaemia that they haven't found a reason for and if I don't hold onto/make enough iron the B12 will likely as not be the same!

Yes, this is true. My GP told me about it when I saw him last. I naturally assumed I would wait until the 3mth blood results came back but he wants me to have the B12 sooner. He just forgot to tell me when lol

I wish my GP was as understanding as yours.

I went to the Manor in April regarding my gallbladder and saw Mr Khan's registrar who told me that the bloods I had done in December showed very low B12. Dr Hartland wasnt in clinic that day and she said it wasnt necessary for my bloods to be redone.

It played on my mind for a while so I went to the Gp and asked if he had seen my blood results from the Manor in Dec. He hadn't, so I asked if it could be tested again as I was displaying some symptoms of low B12; exhausted, dizzy, losing my balance, losing concentration etc... (I'm aware these can be symptoms of other things as well, but thought B12 was an obvious answer following bypass)

My results came back within normal levels. I asked how this could be when the manor results had come back low. He said the manor results "must have been a blip" and when I asked about getting a shot "just incase - to see if it made me feel any better" He said he wouldnt give me any until I was below normal levels.

My GP did blood tests on my VB12 and they came back normal, so he wasn't going to bother, but my Consultant insisted that he did, and there after every 3 months despite what the blood tests say. I had 3 in the first instance, and my next one is due at the end of this month.

I wasn't saying to ignore your doctor, I was just saying what my GP said.

Why are Doctors so very different, surely they should ALL be up to date on everything, or at least find out if a patient asks about something they don't know about.

Not to worry FL, i'm just aware that as i said before my gp is so very wls friendly, he referred me when i was a new patient and he had no previous notes for me at the time because he is a frim believer in it and the benefits....

As someone else said, why surgery's don't have the same information i have no idea :) xx

No doctor or surgeon seems to have the same rules. My own GP had a bypass so I know she knows what affects her. I spoke to my surgeon about this today and he says is levels are normal than not to worry but it can take time to build them up if they are low but he said very few bypass patients actually require B12 supplements but that many NHS surgeons do it as a matter of course.

Meant to say to that it would be so much easier if there was just one set of rules. It is all so confusing.

i don't know what to do my hosp say they won't give me B12 unless my levels are low, blood test in Jan through gp was fine, am thinking of askin surgeon to give me jab when i see him end of July, as i am nearly 2 yrs out and haven't had any B12 jabs. Should i insist or should i wait and have another blood test :(
