Hiya was wondering about what bmi you need when offered surgery?? X thanks

The NICE national criteria is a BMI of 40 with co- morbidities, or 45 without and a documented history of trying to lose weight over a certain period of time. However, this varies in different areas. Your best off checking on the NICE website what it is, in the area you live in :)

Thankyou I keep reading peoples being in there 50s I'm not sure if I'm even going to meet the criteria :-/ x

The NICE guidelines, are BMI of 35 with co-morbs and 40 with none, the following is from the BOSPA website:

The following criteria have been set by the UK government health advisory body, the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE), to aid patient selection. It is unlikely that you will find a UK bariatric surgeon who is willing to perform an operation, even privately, on you if you don't meet these criteria:
  • BMI over 40 kg/m², or BMI over 35kg/m² and patient also has an obesity–related disease
  • Aged 18 or over (some centres set an upper age limit of 60)
  • The patient has tried other weight loss treatments without permanent success
  • There is no specific metabolic or psychological reason for the obesity
  • The patient has sufficient understanding of the procedure and the changes it will produce
  • The patient is strongly motivated to undergo the procedure and lifestyle changes it will entail
The PCTs didn't necessarily follow these though and the Care Commissioning Groups will no doubt decide themselves their own criteria. I have yet to read what these will be, so if anyone else can shed some light

Post code lottery :(

Really xx I'm not sure what my current Bmi is but I am really worries now xx

go onto bupa bmi calculator and work it out you just put your weight and height in and it does it for you.
If you go private they do it at 27 plus x

Erm not necessarily!

With a BMI of 27 that's only two above the top end of 'normal'.

I can understand a BMI of 29 which is bordering on obese, plus there may be other issues.

It won't be a case of you are slightly overweight, prepared to pay - therefore you get. That's if you get the proper pre op support/advice from a reputable provider anyway

I think its still a postcode lottery x

I saw 4 different providers prior to my surgery and 3 out of 4 said 27 would be there minimum. Thg were the only one out of the 4 who said they didn't have a minimum they would treat each case individually which is why I picked them. The others made me think they just wanted your cash.

Wow I have lots to look into and learn :-/ xx will have a look at my bmi! Will have to get the scales out :-/ xx

Yer, like I said mine was 29 the day of assessment and slightly less day of op. I was told pre assessment if it was below 30 they would not allow, (THG) and I had a whole argument ready for them to except me, been a lot heavier plus constant battle! However they didn't ask much just said ok please sign here weighted me with my heavy clothes on. Told me if I lost any weight prior to op then it may not go ahead.... Which I thought was odd. I felt they just wanted the money, but that was with me I knew what I wanted and needed....

I don't get what you are saying here, did you see four providers just to ask what their minimum was even though yours was higher

Your original comment was that if you go private 'they do it at 27 plus'. I replied not necessarily, it would depend (hopefully) on a thorough assessment of a patients suitability, not just their ability to pay. Many generalisations are not general because they have exceptions :D

And as Louloumoo said THG said they may not go ahead with her op if her weight had dropped too much, implying they do have a minimum.

Clarabelle28 I think it would be best to find out what your BMI is, where you want to be and then find out what your options are. Happy researching xx
