I have never, pre-op or now, heard any mention of calories but in posting people say how high calories are in certain things.

I get confused as to should I look for calories, sugar content or fat content & how much of each?!?

I know everyone is different of course but as a general rule ... Help!

Hi,

I too was never told the amount of how many calories etc to be eating, but after reading several books I have found that most say you should be eating around 1000+ cals a day. (I dont think I am eating that much though!) But I do not look at the calorie content of food, just the fat and sugar. I personally do not eat a food if it has more than 14g of sugar per portion that I want to eat. For me, anymore than that then I feel a bit ill. Fat wise, I stick to low fat products, and have been fine. I'm not sure on the amount of fat is too much in a portion, but my book says limit fats in your diet to no more than 30% of your total calories . I too would like to know how many grams of fat in a portion is too much actually!

Sorry I'm not much help, but I'm sure someone can give you better answers than me! We can all tolerate more or less of something, so sometimes it is a trial and error thing to see what and how much we can eat!

Hello, one of the books I read a while back said 14g of each, so the same for fat as for sugar. It's a rough guide I use as well. I don't really bother with the calories so much as the fat and sugar.

My consultant was saying that simple carbohydrates (white bread etc) can lead to dumping as carbohydrates are converted to sugar in the intestines and simple ones are converted quickly. So when I have carbs I try to stick to complex ones.

Thanks Shel for the answer to the fat amount, I wasnt sure on that. I too look at the sugars from the carbohydrates. I try to use wholegrain/wholewheat everything as they are better carbs.
Thanks again,
Kelxxx

Hi Kel, i tend to stick to anything under 5g of fat as higher stuff does tend to make me have the runs. sugar wise i try to stick under 14g. I've not been looking at calories as my daily intake is that low that i'm nowhere near the daily womens allowance. x
