Hi everyone, I am here to tell my story in the hope it will give encouragement and hope to others going down the route of bariatric surgery on the NHS.

Exactly 21 weeks ago today I approached my GP about surgery, yes I know its not that long ago is it?? I had tried for over two years with my GP to loose weight, the usual slimming classes, Reductil, Orlistat and Food for thought weight mangement courses all of which failed miserablly. I was gaining weight every single week and with high blood pressure and poor sleeping I was not a happy person.

I was originally advised by the PCT that my application would be refused and that they would probably request two years weight management at either Hope or Aintree hospital. This in fact was an error on behalf of the PCT she should of said at my local clinic in Penwortham who had just started a weight management clinic. However, as she had said Hope or Aintree my GP asked if I could be referred whilst awaiting the outcome from the PCT and this stoke of good luck got me on the road to surgery. I saw Dr New the same week the PCT turned my application and suggested two years weight management. Dr New thought I would be suitable for surgery but could not decide if banding or bypass and said he would refer me to a specialist in that area and I then had my second stroke of luck. My referral letter to Mr Ammori went missing, I contacted PALS to find out what was going on and by chance (the second bit of luck) they contacted Mr Ammori's private secretary Louisa. She was my angel sent from heaven. She took over and organised my appointment with Mr Ammori and pushed for the results of my sleep apnea tests, she sent everything extremely quickly to the PCT by fax and then supported me daily whilst we waited and she nagged and I nagged the PCT. Finally I got a call from Louisa saying that funding had been approved but I could not have surgery with Mr Ammori I would have to attend Spire Regency hospital in macclesfield and start all over again waiting for appointments for surgeons etc. I was devasted.

I spent two days crying as Louisa was saying I could have the op in two weeks with Mr Ammori and the PCT were saying no you have to attend the Regency and there is a 2-3 month back log for an appointment to see a new surgeon. On the third day I pulled myself together and started to research. I contacted the department of health about a patient's right to choose where they attend for surgery. I was told if the hospital carried out the procedure and was on a list that they showed me then the PCT could not stop me having it there. I then contacted the head of commissioning, I had already fired off a complaint to them about wasting NHS money duplicating tests and consultations etc. I forwarded a copy of the email from the department of health and the very next day I received a call to say I could have it with Mr Ammori at the Spire in Manchester.

Then it was action stations, Louisa needed a copy of them saying it was ok and we struggled a bit to get that, they finally agreed to fax it over and before I knew it I was having a pre op on the thursday and going in Spire on saturday morning! I am now four days post op!....I never got time to enjoy the fact I had been given funding....lol...which is just typical.

I ahve to say it might sound easy when you read this but I had 5 letters from different departments working on this go missing in the post. My two strokes of luck were getting the info from the PCT which led me to Hope Hospital and Lousia. I know I have been very very lucky indeed.

Worn out now so will continue later from when I arrived at the hiospital....not much more to say but this girl needs a rest....xx

See how it is done? Kicking butt & taking names.

Congrats!

Interesting! I had to wait a fair bit longer for my surgery, there were no funding issues, just loads of appointments for this and that.

In total I think i must have been waiting about a year and a bit for the actual surgery. I add on an extra month to that as I was due to have my op on 2nd October and I was sent home because they ran out of theatre time. After that they discovered I had a MRSA positive swab result, so I had to be treated for that too.

Still all's well that ends well.

I found having a good GP at the very beginning made all the difference to me too.

thanks for sharing your story Linda. your long journey for funding has come to an end and your new weight loss journey is just beginning. oh how exciting look forward to following your progress xx

Time for stage two the acutal day.

My friend collected me bright and early, well 8.30am and we set off to manchester. Made good time and arrived at 9.45am.

A gentleman took my bag and showed me to my room, which was very nice. I had woke with a sickly headache(no change there then) and with having nothing to eat was compounding this. My friend had a coffee on a lovely little tray in my room and I settled down. A nurse came to take me details, weigh me, take blood, measure me for stockings etc and then we were left alone. I was last on the list of 5 so knew I would not be going anywhere in a hurry. My friend left to take care of her husband and I had a nap, woke an hour later with my head feeling even worse, a nurse went to check with the anaethatist (sp) to see if I could have anything. I was allowed to paracetamols and one of my bp tabs and a large glass of water which helped.

Mr Ammori came in to see me around 3pm to sign the consent form and we had a quick chat, he said he would keep the blue dye from my hair as it takes 10 days to wash out and off he went. The anaethiatist came to see me and we had a quick chat and he said it would not be long now. At 3.55pm they came for me and I walked to the lift and down to theatre. The staff put on the leg massage bits and chatted to me about me being the light weight of the day. Something I had been told earlier on as well. They were lovely and I chatted about my daughter not speaking and he said he had not spoken to his parents for three years and had now made up with them and deeply regretted not speaking to them for so long and that they were the best parents in the world. I chattered about the Man United score to his assistant and they then said it was time to go to sleep. By this stage I had already had the first stage of it to relax me. I said night night and then next I knew they were saying my name.

I did not think for one minute that I had been out long enough for him to perform the op and as I had bit my lip badly when going out they kept telling me this and said I had to feel it. I kept saying "but has he done it".....I know my priorities...lol..

Next I knew I was back in my bed asking for the tv to be put on and it was 8.45pm I then sat up and watched some tv having the regular obs done and sipping on some water, my headache had gone, there was no pain and I was feeling on top of the world.

The following morning my morphine drip and the massge leg things were removed. I had not used the drip once. I was given iv anti sickness meds and some pain killer dispite not needing it, they say it helps with the swelling and that was it until lunch time when Kath the bariatric nurse came to see me and explain about the immediate follow up. I have an appointment to see Mr Ammori on 16 December and from then until 18 months post op I will see Kath who has had the op herself and lost 14stone. I could of come home at that stage but as I had no lift to get me back to Preston I had to wait until the following morning for my friend to come and collect me.

Lucky for me as during the night I got really hot (I had turned the heating in the room off as soon as I had arrived). Just before I had gone to bed I had my obs taken they noticed my breathing was not high enough and I had to sleep wearing one of those little tubes that give you oxygen. In the night I woke feeling hot and unable to breath and was given a mask and the lovely nurse got me comfortable on the bed and I slept for a few hours.

It seems a combination of not taking my water tablet for my BP had caused me to be breathless on top of the anaethestic etc. Not a feeling I want to repeat I have to say.

Due to lackof knowledge with my GP I could of carried on not taking my tablet and my breathing would of got worse, thankfully Kath gave me good advice and it got sorted quickly.....now just the nausea......yuck....xx

thanks for sharing, i love reading such inspiring stories, actually i have found a new diet.. i sit at my computer log on here and then find hours have passed in what feels like minutes. no seriously i look forward to hearing your progress. take care. Bridie X

Thanks for that, mine sounds a tad boring unfortunately lol..and this site is addictive...I log on first thing in the morning and only log off when its time for bed and in between I hop on and off....xx

Hi HC, so far so good, still not getting much sleep although what I do get is much better quality than I had before the op. I still only average aroun 6-7 hours a day which I think is a little low considering surgery but I do get plenty of rest. Not felt sick this morning, blended up some spag bol and had some of that it really hit the mark no twinges or anything anywere lol....No headache (YIPEE). Starting to do more and more around the house, when I was feeling sick the slightest movement made me feel worse, bit like sea sickness. Going to get my head around some tasty, healthy foods so they are more easy to hand. I seem to have bits of things all over the place. Once you eat something though (even before surgery) and you feel sick your mind associates it with the food whether it was or not so some things I doubt I will want to eat again for a long long time ie the lovely convent garden soups that I so enjoyed before hand now yuck at the thought. Got some lovely lentil and bacon soup for my lunch and walk around with a water bottle sipping, although I hate plain water...how are you doing? xx

Im fine thanks linda. have stuck with the fluids for 2 weeks. and have prepared an assortment of pureed foods for the next stage. Luckly i havent experienced and nausea apart from in recovery straight after the op. I only ever sleep for about 7 hrs and always wake during the night for the loo and have carried on the same since my op.
I havent been tired and cant believe as its TOM how well i feel. Saying that i am very rarly ever ill even colds avoid me.lol touch wood
