Coming home on the train after the op

Has anyone of you come home on the train after ur op?
It's looking like I will be travelling alone there and back on the train for my op, depending on the time I will be sent home I may have to change trains as well.
Was wondering how the journey was on the way home and might it be a good idea to get a first class ticket for more comfort (never been first class so dont know the difference), plus it would have to be an open ticket as don't know when I will be coming home, It does say that they need people to leave by 1030 am in the book for the next patients, but unsure if I will be in 2 or 3 or more days.

I don't think they will let you go hun?????????? The hospital will want someone to pick you up to ensure your safe on your way home..

They wouldnt release me til they knew someone was collecting me. I also wasn't allowed to carry anything even remotely heavy like my overnight bag.
Maybe call your provider and see what they say.

I have no choice nobody is available do they walk u to the door to check? Would a small suitcase on wheels be ok?

You really should not travel alone, you will be very tired and uncomfortable and should not be lifting or pulling any bags, its a major procedure you will need help xxx

My hospital wouldnt of let me leave alone they even took my mams full name for on my discharge letter, have u not got a friend who could come for you? if not I would ring them to see what they say xx

You will have to have someone with you or a cab from door to door.This is major surgery and cant carry or pull anything.You need a pillow for the seatbelt.I could hardly walk upright and very slowly.You will have to rethink this journey and get a companion.Its more than they dare do to let you go home by yourself on the train.Maz x

Hun i was able to get a friend to pick me up.... but in case there was a problem i had arranged with a taxi company for a driver to come into the hospital, carry my bags and take me home... this was gonna cost me £110... as i was going from London to Milton Keynes... but eventually i had a friend offer to come and get me... 1.. the hospital would not let me leave without an escort... 2. they wouldnt let me carry my luggage... 3... i was so tired and lethargic...i just slept in the car on the way home.

If you were to travel alone on the train... what if you couldnt get a seat.. there is no way you could stand... what if you feel sick or sleepy.. how will you carry your luggage... the first few days you have to be very careful.. this is a major operation you are having xxx
If you are having your op at an nhs hospital... have you asked them if they run a hospital drop off service? xx

Oh I wouldnt chance going home on the train, what if someone bumped into you, or if you felt sore or unwell. Our hospital has volunteer drivers ~ maybe you could arrange that ? Its not worth taking the chance as this is major surgery. I am having my op end of March and have been told already that I have to picked up, health and safety I think. They need to ensure you are ok . Try and rethink if you can . Good luck with your op ~ will look forward to hearing how you get on

Hi there,

I really wouldn't travel on your own honestly,when I had my op done it can be difficult to walk properly.
I was feeling rather sick,and was glad someone was with me to carry my bag help me.
And also the pillow to protect your stomach is a must!

Following my op the walk from my bed to the doors of the hospital wore me out. I got in the car and slept all the way home please try and find someone to pick you up its for your own safety. Pauline x

Most of the replies seem to suggest you should find someone to come with you! But if you haven't got anyone then you can't just conjure them up!! Speak to the team and see what they suggest - it maybe they'll keep you in an extra day or so to ensure your fit.

I may have a similar predicament. Op will be in Sheffield, I live in Retford and will struggle to get someone to drive me home. What about hospital transport?

Great words of advice as usual...the only difference with 1st class is you have to sit opposite overweight salesmen who have put their ticket on expenses and act a bit like "brits abroad" Oh I am such a B**** at times!

Please don't even consider it...my journey by car was bad enough..you've had major surgery...public transport should not be an option. As a last resort at least get quotes for a taxi pickup to get you home. Even if it's £50/£100 its a cost you should factor in!

another thing about first class... they come round offering sandwiches and drinks which you cannot have... and just the slightest smell of food after my op made me wanna be sick!
