Just curious did you all decide you wanted WLS and ask to be refered or were any of you refered for help with your weight and get told that WLS was your only option?

i decided a long time ago back in early 2004, i had a fight on my hands back then to get a gp referal but i stood my ground, and got my referal in the end.

My doctor told me I should have it in 2003-2004. I didn't want it and waited a year. Then I decided I had to look into it and began researching it. Finally, in the fall of 2004 I began going to seminars. I decided I had to have it. I didn't want to but realized I needed it. In those seminars is where I heard about different types of WLS and after much research decided upon what I was going to have done.

I decided myself, to do something myself after years and years of eating disorders and struggling with diets, I just thought enough was enough, I never went to my doctor, Because they are totaly useless, and never helped me with anything else, so I thought It was pointless even showing myself up, so I made a few phone calls and went Private.

I decided for myself after a lifetime of failed diets, It was my aching knees and back, and the fact that I get so breathless that made me realise I had to find a permanent solution. I did loads of research before taking the plunge and asking my GP is one of the best things i have ever done for myself.

My GP came up with it - after many failed diets over 20yrs she said everything medically had been done and this was my last chance. Honestly i was horrified and said No immediately, but i went home carried out some research and went back and agreed

Ditto for me.

i asked the GP for it. Im 27 and couldnt go on like this. My father and grandfather both have type 2 diabetes, so it wasnt only a matter of time before i developed it. And i had no energy for my lil boy, and i would like baby # 2 some day, and being the size i was it was too dangerous.

I first asked for it at the end of 2007, but was fobbed off with a dieticians appointment, a year later i went back after another 101 failed diets, and asked for it. Had to try orlistat first then got my referal.

I thought about it about 5-6 years ago but my family talked me out of it. I did go on to lose weight on a VLCD, but have put it all back on plus more.

I asked my GP about WLS and she was all for it because I have diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol and more.

I thought about it first in January 2008, but ended up wasting money on LighterLife for 6 months. Lost 4 stone, and then piled on 5 in the space of about 4 months. January 2009 decided that after trying every diet, pill and potion known to the western world, oh and a try with hypnosis, decided that WLS would be the only way I could permanently lose the weight - didn't talk to my GP about it, know way I could wait 18 odd months before I had the op, so did some research on the 'net and booked an appointment, the rest as they say is history and very soon, so will my obesity!

I did all my research then went to my Gp with all the reasons I felt it would make my life better...and he agreed and referred me.
Crikey it sounds soo easy when said like that, but it wasn't I spent more than 18 years yo yo ing on many different diets and it just so happened that I had already done all the diets etc that were part of the criteria...phew!!

In 2004 I was having many serious health issues, one that nearly incapacitated me (pseudotumor cerebri). I was sent to a neurologist, osteopath and endocrinologist. My endocrinologist was the one who suggested the surgery but my GP wasn't supportive and I frankly didn't know enough about it. I mententioned my health issues to a psychologist friend and the first thing she said was you should get a gastric bypass. That very day I went home and did hours of research, even called an old friend that had had wls. Once I was satisfied that I knew what it was all about, I tried to find a way to get one. No go for me, I was a poor student and had no access to the $20,000 it required to get the surgery in the USA. Over the next 2 years, I gained many pounds with my illnesses but with treatment for them, I was able to shed about 40lbs. Once I was more active and eating less I realized the weight was not shifting anymore. I moved to the UK in 2006 and I was stuck with weight loss. I was feeling like I only had one choice, gastric bypass but again I was a poor student. In 2007 when I found out that the NHS would sometimes fund a bypass, I began my campaign to be one of those people. I took me until October 2008 to get the surgery but here I am, done & dusted!
