Fed Up!

Well im truly fed up with all the jumping through hoops with the dietician etc. My weight has stayed the same the last few months even though my excise has greatly increased. My doctor is very supportive of putting me forward for weight loss surgery but says its best done through the proper channels.

Because of where i live( very remote scotland) i basically see a dietician once a month for a weigh in... i get no support from her and to be honest she is very negative about me ever getting surgery unless i pay for it myself!. I have completed the 9 months as requested and 1 year on orlistat and now she wants me to do 3 months of slimfast....grrr she just doesnt get it...that will not help anyone in my situtation. Im over 20st and just fed up with her altogether...I am due to see her in the morning again and im dreading it and i know i have lost a big fat zero.

I have joined the gym and regularly doing swimming. I am on medication which causes weigh gain so im fighting just to not put any extra on...Im at my wits end with it all. I did not go to the doctor to discuss surgery to be continually given the brush off. I know this is a serious life changing op and i have researched it greatly...i feel im getting nowhere...

I really dont want to go and see my horrible dietician in the morning just to getthe negative nonsense about how i have lost nowt and am not a good candidate for surgery blah blah....

I would go through with her all the things you have been doing as you listed including your exercise regime & then throw it back to her by asking 'can she explain why these things are not working for you'. If she can't or you are not satisfied ask for a second opinion from one of her colleagues or a specialist Bariatric doctor. You may have to insist that you are referred to a different hospital which may be difficult given where you live but worth a try. I would ask her to write to you & you doctor with the answers to your questions. Your doctor is in charge of funding & it's application through your Primary Care Trust so go back to him. Find out what your PCT criteria are for weight loss surgery, the NICE guidelines are BMI over 50 but some PCTs have their own. Good luck.

Thank you, I am in the criteria for my PCT but my doctor said it looks best to go along with dieticians to help build a case, i have just emailed him to say im not happy with the dietician, i know he has said in the past he could refer me direct with o0ut dieticians approval but they may reject my case if i try to do it that way, but will see what he says, many thanks for your advice..

You are welcome. Just to let you know I only had 1 meeting with my hospital dietician as did several of my fellow weight loss surgery friends. Unfortunately PCTs are all different. The journey may be long but so worth it.
I am just over 3 months post op & have lost 6 1/2 stone & dropped 5 dress sizes.
