First Appt at Homerton What to expect?

It's all I can think about since I got my letter on 31st Dec- bit sad really! My BMI is 47 have had a bulging disc in my back and was last week medicated for hypertension so am hoping it's enough. I will update you on thurs how it goes. Next week will soon be here for you x
Hi hope you're appointment with consultant went well x x

Hi it was good, thank you for asking. Have to have a sleep study and an endoscopy because I have acid reflux. So have to wait for appointments for those

Who did you get to see and what sort of things did they talk about also do they give you an idea what surgery is best for you and whether you will be put on the waiting list, sorry lol for all the questions but nervous for mine next week. How comes you have to have a sleep study that wouldn't be for acid reflux would it ? Do you know if everyone has to have one ? X x

I saw the consultant Miss Devalia who went over the information that I gave to the dietician on my first appt. She then told me I need a sleep study to see if I have sleep apnea because I scored highly on the epworth? Questionnaire and the endoscopy because I suffer from heart burn/reflux. She also asked what surgery I would prefer out of gastric bypass and gastric sleeve (gastric band is not an option she said) but we could discuss this further down the line. She also said she needs evidence from my gp that I have seen a dietician and attended a gp recommended exercise programme in the last 3 years. So the next step is the sleep study & endoscopy. Apart from BMI of 47. Bulging disc in my back and high blood pressure I have no other health issues so can't expect a quick result xx

oh gosh a bit worrying about gp stuff surely in referral report from doctor it has what you have done. Have you seen your gp referral letter does it say whether you completed tier 3 weight management plan. If I remember when I filled my epworth score it was 4 do you know what they consider high? Hope you don't have to wait to long x x

Yes I saw my gp's referral letter and he said that I had tried Orlistat, WW's, Slimming World, Cambridge, Lighter Life and exercise plan. It is what it is! Will just have to be patient and do as they ask. She did say that if I can provide all the evidence I could have surgery in as little as 4 months. Don't know what to think to be honest! I'm generally healthy and don't have any other health issues (other than listed before) so can only assume it may be harder for me than someone with other serious health issues. She didn't seem that interested that I have high blood pressure xx

Wow 4 months that's quick how are you meant to show evidence of them diets then baffles me have you not done a tier 3 weight management plan cause that would be on your doctors records. Some of my blood tests have come back and I'm lacking in vitamin d so I'm sure I'll have to be on supplements for a while. Are you going to the patient support meeting in feb I'm going it would be nice if you can come as we are in the same boat. X

Hi fell asleep sorry! I don't have to provide evidence of all the diets- just that I have seen a dietician and done a GP referred gym/exercise plan. I don't feel that hopeful of getting it done now to be honest but my daughter who came with me said I'm being negative. I'm confused by what all the tier 3 & 4 things are? I've already done a group session? What one do you mean? x

tier 3 is a weight management group that you do before your doctor refers you, its normally in your area like mine is more life west essex and you go for 6 to 12 months depending on bmi. It's like a group session and seeing a dietitian and speaking about your eating habits, I had to do it before my doctor referred me. Hope that helps x x

Hi i am not under the same hospital as you but like you I had evidence of trying to lose weight and exercise, all I need to have now is a endoscopy then I will have surgery in 3 months. Your bmi alone qualifies you for wls without having to have any other health issues. Please don't despair xx

Hey, I know things have changed slightly now and think some people do the tier 3 after the referral. I didn't have any other health problems apart from my bmi of 63

Hi Sophiapink when you went for your first consultant appointment did they ask for more evidence of your tier 3 weight management plan ?

No they didn't. I had done my tier 3, seen the sleep specialist and had all the tests so it was all on my records.

I am under Mr Koak x
