Gastric Band - Bad tummy?

Bluebutterflier

Bouncing Bander
I havent read any threads from a Bander saying they have had 'Dumping' Syndrome....

I was wondering if anyone had gone through it...

Ive been up since last night...Im not sure what I ate its one of a few things....

I had over 800 calories left in my diet for the day, and my partner baked mini tarts and pies...and I was naughty for the first time since my pre-op diet & Surgery and had a small Fresh apple & Cinnamon pastry pie...(smaller than the palm of my hand....)

And half and hour later....belly ache and pain....from the stomach down to the belly button...

So I sat there reviewing my food of the day...and the only two differences to my diet were......the Apple pie and earlier in the evening I had hot and spicy beef kebabs - 2 of them for just over 100 calories, with a salad.....

Now I havent eaten beef yet, although I done roast lamb last week....And I havent done very spicy yet....So Im not sure if thats ticked my belly off...

The pain went on, so I had no option (please excuse this)...But to sit on the Loo....

I felt nausea, but rarely do I ever vomit....My belly was full of pains, and wind....and i finally after a good 30 mins of sitting there making noises...went to the toilet....but it was all watery.....(sorry for tmi)

I laid on the sofa for a while, noises still bad, still feeling sick...then went to bed at about midnight...felt the urge to go to the loo again but nothing....Then slept uneasy all night long....and up at 4.30am...Now im awake, I thought hmmm not much pain, ill have a cuppa tea....ive drank it and feel sick again....:(

Perhaps its a tummy bug....Just thought Id ask....

(And before people give me a hard time about the apple pie, I know, my one bad thing ive eaten in over a month - give me a break - you try sitting in a room with over 40 being baked and not try just one - But whatevers made me sick - if its the beef or the apple pie - I will cut them out now!):sigh:

Banders don't dump, as we aren't in effect surgically altered so just must have disagreed with you x

banders dont dump... but it could be the beef... as that can be slightly difficult to get through a band... so its a case of trying it another time..tiny bites and chew well. This info i heard on another thread... so i could be wrong...ive had a bypass x

No that's right rayne, I hardly ever have beef for that reason but it's more than likely to have hot stuck and had to pop back out :) usually once it's slipped thru you're fine (from my experience).
Weird but I do love the sensation of feeling it gloop thru lol x

Well theres something I didnt know....All this time I assumed Banders do Dumping syndrome too....wow...Ok....Its my providers website - It has videos saying about it, in the Band section...So I got confused....I will let them know about that on my next visit.

I feel like a wally now...But i spose its better to ask than to assume...

Perhaps its the beef....This is the first reaction apart from bad trapped wind and a bruised Diaphragm...that Ive had...Oh and some constipation....lol...Oh the joys of the toilet eh!

Thanks all for clearing that up for me....I'll do just fluids today and get whatever bugs in me...out! :) lol

That's why we don't have to monitor sugar intake like the others so chocolate etc is never an issue...apart from it not helping you to get slim! :)

Hmmm been having a look see on Google for different information and found this...

Risks Of Gastric Band Weight Loss | LIVESTRONG.COM

Which states:
Dumping Syndrome
Dumping syndrome occurs when the undigested contents of your stomach are dumped into the small intestine too rapidly, according to MayoClinic.com. Symptoms can begin just after eating or may not occur until several hours after you eat. Symptoms of dumping syndrome include abdominal pain, cramps, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, sweating, dizziness, burping, heart palpitations, fainting and low blood sugar. You may also feel shaky or lightheaded. Changing your diet or taking drugs that slow the way food passes through your stomach can help the problem. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary.

Yes I've seen that but if you google gastric band dumping all the other sites tell you you won't experience dumping. This does seem to be the bad apple in there and lets be honest we all know whilst the web is good its not always accurate. My consultant advised this so can only tell you based on my experience etc. have you ever been told to watch sugar content ie below 5g etc? As that's what the others have to follow.
Perhaps call your nutrionist to get it confirmed either way in which case?

Yeah id like to know guidance amounts of what im meant to be having....i know myfitnesspal has a bunch of them when I add foods, but to be honest, im not sure how much im meant to be having....

And Ive seen other sites saying No dumping for banders....its peculiar...perhaps Ill ask my specialist nurse when I have my band fill next tuesday...

Hi Blue, I am almost 2 years out and never heard of a bander dumping (its not possible)- So I am surprised that your provider has this information to state otherwise ......the mind boggles lol, Hope your feeling better x

Dumping syndrome occurs most often in people who have had surgery to remove all or part of their stomach, or for whom much of their stomach has been surgically bypassed.

I have experienced similar episodes to you with foods that clearly my banded tum can't tolerate!

I've had it after eating greek yoghurt - not the 0% fat type. What happened is around half an hour later stomach ache then a mad rush for the toilet. I've found that this also happens with protein shakes.

It could be either of the things you ate but it might be worth avoiding both just incase xx

Our dietician told us at a talk that people even dump pre op. It can happen when you have been on a very low fat/calorie/diet then eat something loaded. Or, she said when you eat too much and suddenly feel very sluggish and tired. It's all a mild type of dumping.

So going on that, if you have been eating very healthy it could be a type of dump.

It's only what our dietician told us, so honestly not trying to disagree with anyone. Just thought I would share xxx

Yes Sophie that used to happen to me! Roughly every 3months I'd dump, pass out etc etc....bizarrely my doc couldn't diagnose yet it's only me being on this journey I could match it all up! It was always the high sugar that would catch me out. Interestingly hasn't happened once since being banded and eating healthily! X

Most likely was a type if dump. The dietician said its most closely related to a hypo. She said a bypass dump is just a more obvious and sometimes more intense dump.

It was a very interesting talk :)

Ok its happening again.....Awake all of last night, with nausea feeling and bad belly pains and diarrhea....

Finally got some sleep between 9am-12pm....to wake with it all again....Ive been to the loo over 10 times now....Its ridiculous!

So....my partners at work, but im gonna get him to get me some form of tablet...

Has anyone with a band taken imodium - is it ok.....as right now i'd eat a packet for the pain, discomfort and just ickiness of it all!

Although I'm getting a bypass I would be interested to know the answer to this, for banders and for bypass as I know we are more likely to be constipated other than dumping syndrome but suffering from ibs I wonder if there might be a time I need it or if I got a bug or something?

Bluebutterflier, did you eat something that might be linked to it? or is it just random? Maybe you have a tummy bug but I would give the team a ring see what they think just to be safe. Hope you feel better soon x

Im not sure what it was...ive gone over my food diary...and everything I've eaten has been freshly cooked and my partner had too....
