I've had a letter from the hospital today to say I'm nearing the top of the wait list and they just need some up to date information like weight etc.

How long after you got this information did you have your operation? I have no idea how long I will be at the top!!

All information welcome but any Derby people especially :)

I'd say you should have a date in the next 4-6 weeks. Or you could have a phone call out of the blue like I did, giving me two weeks notice. Derby are notoriously bad at communicating with patients. But it also has one of the biggest waiting lists for bariatric surgery in the uk. I hope you don't have to wait too long :)

I'm over the moon for you. I hope you hear soon xx

Yaaay! I'm so excited! I was talking to Kirstyjade and she mentioned her letter came at the end of April and her appointment was in June so I figure I have at least 4 weeks before getting anything. I am excited at the moment and not one bit nervous! There is all time for that to come I suppose!! I've only been on the list for five and a half months so they're clearly trying to pull their finger out!

Wtg! hun we could well be sharing a losers bench :)

The waiting list and other peoples timescales are only a bit of a guideline. There are other factors they take in to account.

If you have very few other health issues then they can fit you into a smaller time slot than that they have to allocate for somebody with more health issues whereby they may need more specialised/extra staff (I think for someone with sleep apnoea for example they have an extra anaesthetist in - but I could be wrong). So they may have a 'small' slot available with two 'big job' patients at the top where the op wouldn't realistically fit in so then the 3rd person, who is more 'straightforward' would get done.

(I hope my terminology makes sense!!)

The bariatric team at Derby share facilities with the cancer unit which is why they can't use a 'X amount of ops per day & X amount of people on the waiting list' formula.

Thats actually really useful lincslass - I think I am aiming for a surgery by October. I have just sent over my details to her so I just need to make sure I don't put on any weight. I have a weekend of fun filled activities that means Im not just sat at home so I really hope that I can shift a couple more pounds before my appointment?

So what order did you guys get your date? I've seen some people get pre-op then date and others vice versa?

NO way! Was yours a cancellation? Well I have no idea how long it will be before my pre-op but at least i'm one step closer than I was last week :D

They never actually said in so many words it was a cancellation, but I think it was. They had messed me about quite a bit and had made a mistake with my funding and the date I went on the list. I had to get PALS involved in the end and had to pester the surgeons secretary a lot to get it sorted. I think they got me in quickly to shut me up lol x

I've just had my dietician letter for 24th of July. Any idea what I should expect for that?

I got mine at the same time. I got a call on a Monday saying my op would be in exactly 2 weeks time (25 Feb), my pre-op would be the following Tuesday (I think it was!) and I was to start my LR diet immediately. That Thursday I got a call from the private hospital I was being done at to say my op had been bought forward to the 22nd.

I was lucky enough to fall in to the category of very very low risk - no health problems whatsoever besides the weight, had operations before with no problems whatsoever and rapid recovery. Therefore they could 'do' me at the private hospital which doesn't have intensive care. And in the end my op was under 2 hours and I was out 24 hours later.

omg I would be so excited! I think if it went the best it could possibly go... I would go on the 24th and they just do my pre-op whilst i'm there and say oh by the way its going to be in four weeks time or even if they give me a guestimate as to how long its going to be! I wouldnt even care if they said its going to be on the 8th of November 2020 as long as I know!

I know :O I read online the other day that under the freedom of information act Derby hosp said the approximate wait time for a bypass is 9 and a half months and they just overestimate to a year just in case. Ive been on the list for nearly 6 months so maybe only another three to go?!
