Infomation On Consultastion?

hi purple welcome to mini's are you going private or NHS routes this will make a difference

private my consultation consisted of me being weighted, blood pressure taken, and a medical history being taken, then a discussion with the surgeon about which proceedure and what it entailed, followed by a talk with the dietitian, as at that point i already knew i was going ahead with it.

i was nhs i was weighed saw a nurse who explained both band and bypass to me and took a full hisry of medical problems and my eating habbits i then saw consultant who gave me my options i then saw the dietician who explained what my eating would be like after op and that was it

Hi purple
i had my consultation on Friday. He asked me about previous weight loss efforts and general health then explained about the procedure etc. I was weighed and my height done but that was about it. Very painless - can almost say I enjoyed it. Pre op assessment tomorrow - may not be so keen on that if it involved needles!
Best wishes

Whittington ....

1st you get an appointment that lasts 3 hrs ....
you get together with a group of others going down same rd as you.
the bariatric nurse and dietitian are there also ..

they ask you to fill a questionnaire in and ask what surgery you want at the start ..

they then take you through all choices of operations and what its helps and what kind of diets you have done and kinds of food you eat and when .. and then at the end of the meet they ask you again what surgery do you want ?? and its to see if you understand what your going ahead with and to help you understand it as much as possible .. and see if you choice of surgery has changed ..

i thought it was very good .. they use to do it 1 0n 1 but now do it as a group as they get u in quicker for your appointment ..

then 2nd appointment is with surgeon .. to talk about what surgery you want and his advice .. he will then tell you if he thinks you are right for what ever op you have picked ..

he will then refer you to tests .. they could be .. mental health ( for eating reasons ) .. ECG ( heart function)..CPX ( its a cycle test to check lungs ) and sleep apnoa test ( to check if you are sleeping with out waking up and breathing right )

i only had to have sleep test and cpx test .. both as done in 3 weeks and had my next surgeon appointment the week after and got my date ..

my GP applied for my funding before i went to the hospital as they knew i would be accepted .. where as if theres going to be an issue with funding prob best leave it to the hospital to do as the Dr's know how to word it and explain you needs .. after all tests are done ..

depending on your area of funding it could be agreed in 2 hrs 2 weeks or 2 months .. or more in some cases .. but i know my hospital keep on at them to get it ....

hope this helps x

Hello again,
Thank you all for getting back to me.

Tendersage, Im going via the NHS Im going to the whittingdon it looks the best out of the choices I was given, I can get my appointment right now if I do it on line, But I want to speak to my GP this wed to make sure Im making the right choice.
Brett I see you are a whittington patient, how long as it taken you from your first consultaion untill now? {hope you dont mind me asking).
Im a little worried at the length of the appointment time I have serious pain issues and cannot sit for that length of time well not without fidgeting:D, I have to go to a pain clinic every 3 weeks to have my pump filled with Morphine/clonididne and have to lie on one of the beds in the day unit so 3 hrs:sigh: I will have to ake plenty of oral morphine to take as a break-through back up prob there is that can make me drowsy this will be hard but I will persevere because I want it so badly.
Im worried that they will not take me seriously because Im not mega obese but I am still obese you will see my Bmi is 38.2 , I need them to see I am getting bigger and will continue to do so due to my lack of mobility! I cannot excercise so have just got bigger since my NHS surgery on my spine (see its their faults Im obese;)) My pain consultant has problems refilling my pump at my 3 weekly refills and this can be dangerous as if he misses the port and injects the morphine into me I will be away with the angels.
I get scared that if I get much bigger the next time I ned a new pump they may say no and that means I will be left bed ridden , Im on the bed alot already due to bad pain, Im hoping losing some of the weight some of the pain may go too..

Jowood, Are you NHS or private? You seem to have got to where you are pretty quickly?
Those that are having your surgery NHS were you all in the criteria that they usualy ask for?
With regards to what surgery I would like, I though it would be gastric band but from what I have read if I had a bypass my medication would not be such an issue where the band would be; it means other alternatives etc, also I read with the banding there can be problems later on I know this is probably rare but knowing me l I would have them and Im in and out of hospital enough so don't want added hospital days in bed:rolleyes:.
I realise the bypass is more major and that they have problems too, its just personal choice and thats where I feel I am right now..

Im sure I will be back with more questions I hope you all don't mind.
Also feel free to put me right on anything you feel I have wrong in what I have researched, I want to get this right.
Again thank you all xx

Hiya purple

Its the BMI in your ticker bar in your signature that Plus and I were referring to. Its showing your BMI is 82! Im guessing you have put your weight in the kilo box instead of the pounds box on ticker factory.
