Found this article and thought it was interesting and something i'd never thought happened to a bypasser....

Gastric Bypass Revision Surgery

What's your thoughts?

I would explore every avenue Julie and it's clearly a reality that these things can happen, so it's down to the specialist bariatric team to track and trace the problem. I'm really hoping for you and wanting the best of everything to happen for you.

Thanks for posting that Julie, it's a really interesting read, particularly as my weight loss seems to have ground to a halt too. On a more personal level, I would certainly bring it up with your team....it would be interesting to see what different providers consider an 'inadequate' weight loss after a bypass in the grand scheme of things, and the steps that would be need to be taken before they would consider revision surgery.

HI Julie

There is another lady on here (cant remember her name - sorry) who is awaiting funding for revision surgery. I dont know if you have spoken to her before?

Hopefully she will see this although she doesnt post very often x

This article makes very interesting reading Julie. At least it arms with you with some questions you can ask when you see Dr Hartland. I wish you all the best my friend.

I agree with TB, it gives you some very good questions to ask the doctors, it may be a good idea to make a note of yuour weight losses to date and start a detailed food diary. Good Luck Julie I will be interested to hear what they say :D XX

this indeed does make interesting reading....i've lost lots of weight, but recently, i've been suffering the effects of a massive hernia from my original WLS....since my corrective surgery last week, i've noticed my restriction seems to be greatly increased, i feel after reading that, that my pouch and intestines had alot of extra room to move into thus allowing me to eat alot more than i should've been able to....since the surgery, my intestines have had to stay where they're meant to live, not pop out for extra room, so for me, my surgery has benefited me big time, another thing i thought about after reading this, and actually after speaking to my lil sis re her surgery, for us, the surgeon decides on the length of the intestinal bypass more than likely just n your BMI, not necessarily thinking about metabolic rates etc, it's no exact science, but a chat in their shell likes would not go amiss, to see where you go from here

I agree with Marky regarding the amount of intestines that are bypasses. Each person is different depending on what the surgeon thinks, and it could be that a factor in how much some people lose, and others dont (there are lots of factors though lol)
Are you really that unhappy with the amount of weight you have lost/have still to lose? I didnt realise that you felt so strongly about things?
Have you spoken at length with your team? Asked them these questions - seen the dieteicians? surgeon? Post op/follow up doctors and explained how 'bad' (Im assuming here?) you are feeling and how unsuccessful you are feeling?
The article is an interesting read, but there must be something your team can advise before looking into surgery?

A girl I was in hospital with was having her revision surgery, she had lost some weight but then stalled & nothing she did kicked start her weight loss, so they did a revision on her & bypassed some more intestine & made her pouch smaller... she's started losing again but is still not a rapid loser (she's still a big girl too) bigger than you or I, Julie.

I definately think its very worth looking into especially for you & if you don't you'll always be wondering. xx

Very interesting read Julie and gives you a lot of ammunition to go armed with to your appointment. I think it's a serioulsy good idea to keep a detailed food diary so that you can show them exactly what you're eating and drinking. That way you've kind of already begun the investigation process for them, as they obvioulsy need to make some investigations into what's happening. I'm hoping they take you very seriously and begin to look into this and get to the bottom of it, so that it can be sorted.

Sal, look at my signature, i did quite well with the loss in the first three or four months and then a virtual stand still. I haven't considered 'revision' surgery but prior to my surgery i had never heard of anything like this. I had heard that people run the risk of gaining weight once they have lost the weight but nobody said i would not get anywhere near there. It does concern me, to the extent that for the last 3 months i've been considering weight watchers or such like. I didn't have surgery too count points/calories but today i find myself counting calories....

I have rung the dietician (who was sending me a new appt through when i missed the other one i asked for when my MIL was critically ill) and she will sort me out a new appt for mid Feb, in the meantime my honeymoon period feels like it's all over for me!

Each month i go to the support group and everyone says how great i look and i know darn well i'm no different from the last time i went.....

I feel like i'm letting myself down!!

Hi Julie,
Just by addressing the issue and looking all around it... you are not letting yourself down but enabling yourself to seek a solution... we never give up Angel... we just stick together and keep on truckin'...

It's going to get sorted somehow and we are with you through this challenging time.

Love and hugs xxx

Julie unfortunately a bypass doesn't work for everyone. If you consider the 70% statistic is an average, then for every person like me who loses 100% + ebw there will be people who lose 30-40% ebw or less.

I've heard of having a lap a g band put around the pouch as revision surgery, and in the USA something similar to POSE done on a bypass pouch but that was a good few years post op.

Fingers crossed that you find a way forward that works for you. Feel free to pm me if you want any 1-1 help or dietary guidance.

Your not letting anyone down Julie, your bypass is letting you down! I know from what you say that you arent eating massive meals or grazing all day so something must be wrong. Mid February isnt very helpful either! Thank God youve got an appointment coming up soon and you can try and get something sorted from that. Im so sorry its getting you down hun and I wish I could say something to make you feel better but I know Id be exactly the same, in fact Id be throwing wobblies all over the show  ((HUGS)) for you! XX

Thanks for posting this Julie, very interesting and you never know you could be one of these.

Helps you understand some of the downsides of surgery.

to the highlighted bit from shelbell's reply....so this proves to all those dopes out there who say surgery is the easy way out, it's not quite as straight forward as it's made out to be now is it??

Thank you Shel i appreciate your input. It's not like i'm asking a lot from my bypass. My goal is around 12 stone however i'd be happy in a 14/16 in all honesty. As for diet, i always go protein first then veg followed by carbs if there is any room for it. In fact up to a few months ago i wasn't having too many veg purely because i was filling on protein....

Thank you again xx

Thanks Dotty, i know my bypass is letting me down but i also feel like i'm letting myself down too. I hear about other bypassers having 700 calories a day and think maybe it's 'greedy' me again? I know it's mad because 1400 calories is not greedy i'm guessing its an average for someone trying to lose weight... Grrr

I expected physical challenges, but the mental challenge has come from nowhere. I thought i'd struggle eating and it hasn't happened. I thought i had been blessed, but now i wonder..........

I eat more than 700 cals, most days Im around 1000 to 1200....its only now and again if Ive got a sore pouch or not feeling too clever it might drop to 700ish. I worry I can eat too much all the time. I get days occasionally where I feel more restriction but mainly I worry I eat too much. I think this bypass malarkey is such a mind ****!! And people have the cheek to say its an easy way out! XX
