Sue, since having my bypass I have gone on to develop a spinal problem which has left me unable to walk more than 100 yards, dependent on massive doses of tramadol, and a complete burden to my husband. I am awaiting a date for surgery to hopefully resolve it. Also, my fibromyalgia has worsened since surgery and I am having more flare ups. I had to give up work last June and cannot forsee when I will be fit to work again. I've had a few people question whether the bypass has contributed to this.
By your logic, I also should not deserve to have had my surgery, as I am in a similar position to yourself and your daughter. My surgery was supposed to ease my pre-existing chronic health problems and disabilities, in reality I am now at my worst.
However, I disagree. If I were still 21stone, my spinal problem would be much more severe, the surgery to fix it would be far far riskier, my recovery would be slower, and my husband would be unable to help me as he does now. He helps me stand up, supports me upstairs, supports me in and out of the bath etc. He couldn't do that if I were at my pre-op weight.
Equally, I am sure your health problems would be affected by your pre-op weight, and you would be facing more challenges. Being ill, disabled or developing health problems does not make you any less deserving than the next person, in many cases it makes you more so.
Big hugs,
Shel x
