As those of you who will have read my posts you will know I am waiting for funding for banding/bypass. I am at the stage were I have been referred to the PCT and they have suggested two years weight management which my GP is appealing as I have been trying with him and other organisations to lose weight since February 2006. I have seen Dr New at Hope hospital who has said that he wants me to speak to a specialist surgeon and I am currently awaiting an appointment to see Mr Basil Ammori at Manchester Royal. I have this passed week undergone sleep apnea tests. Since my GP first referred me to the PCT for funding my weight and BMI have gone up. My concern is what happens if they say no, what will I do then? If I have confirmation I have sleep apnea the PCT said it will carry extra weight but what if they still say no were do I go and what do I do to lose weight? At this stage I am not unduly worried just been thinking of the way forward. I have yo yo dieted for so long that it gets harder and harder to lose anything. I think I need a plan B....Linda x

I'm not sure what to suggest Linda :( Is there any way you could go private if the NHS won't fund?

Hi Shel, not really I am on a strict budget already. I am hoping that even if the PCT say no Dr New will offer some alternative. I am just trying to get the mind set so I have something to fall back on and not fall apart if you know what I mean....Linda x

Hi Linda when are you seeing dr new again. One other option is to move to salford as residents there automatically qualify if they meet the nice criteria. seriously though other than going private i really dont know what to surgest. when i saw the psycologist the other day she was saying that for bypass to go ahead you had to have approval from the 3 specialist in salford, endocrainologist (dr new) psycologist and surgeon. so the fact he is refering you to a specialist psycologist and dr amourie means he is only following his guidelines and then at least if they both say yes you have more support when tackling the PCT.

Hi Carole, I am not seeing a psychologist as there was not one that fitted the criteria that he was looking for one for me for if you can understand that, he said in his letter "I am finding it very difficult to locate an appropriate psychologist who would be able to see you. Because of this I will ask Mr Ammori if he would be kind enough to see you. I would value his opinion as to whether or not her thought that bariatric surgery was in your best interest". Once I receive an appointment to see him I have to contact Dr New to make an appointment for two weeks later. I feel I will be more positive when I get the result of the sleep study next week. If its postive the PCT said it will help and she wants me to call her as soon as I have heard the result. She seems a bit more interested in helping just now...Linda x

hi linda, i wish u all the luck in the world hun, i went private cos i couldnt get funding and my bmi was 65, keep ur chin up hun xxx

Hi,

Just wanted to say, dont give up and stick with it! As others have said, maybe private will have to be your option if you really want to go ahead with this and are refused funding etc, and cant wait the 2 years to start the process again. I went to Belgium to have mine done by a fantastic, hugely experienced surgeon and it is changing my life for the better already. I have always yo yo dieted and had had enough with obesity health related problems. I made the decision and have not looked back since.

I wish you luck, and I hope you get the answers you need.

Take care,

Kel x

Linda just so your not stalking yr postman again. I didnt get the results from my sleep study direct from them. They went to dr new and i only knew they were normal from a copy of the letter that dr new sent to the surgeon to say funding was now in place.
you may of made other arrangements with the clinic but if not it may be worth a phone call next week.

Thanks for that Carole I asked if I could call the secretary for the results and they said I could so I got her number before I left....Linda x

Hi Linda, Mr Ammori did my surgery at Manchester Royal Infirmary. My BMI was 42 and he had no hesitation in recommending weight loss surgery for me. He is very supportive and i'm sure will fight your case just make sure you ahve a list of things to ask and tell him. Good luck hun and keep me posted xx

Thanks Tammy, I dont know what to ask him as I have to convince him my self esteem will get better is a bit of a tough one because being overweight does make me self concious. I am scared of saying the wrong thing. I also think I should stay off the boards here for a while, I feel I am the odd one out, everyone else seems to have funding or in line to get it or have had the op/paid private for it. I feel it puts pressure on me as as it stands their is noone really fighting my corner. Sorry if that sounds naff its hard to articulate what I want to say lol....just replied to your other post how fantastic to be size 16 you have done so well hun...Linda x

Linda i sat and cryed my eyes out with mr ammori saying i wanted the op so i could see my children grow up and look at myself without feeling repulsed. He understood fully where i was coming from and knew that my depression would be better alone with my own self worth. really didn't have to fight for it he saw all the benefits!! keep positive hun and don't stop posting we all care and i really hope you get the answers and op you deserve xx

Hey linda although you feel in a different boat from everyone else we are all in the same water. Dr new would not of recommended you to see mr a if he didnt feel that there was a possibility for you to have surgery. We are all here for you regardless of where we are on our journey. Whatever way things go you need people around you who understand how it is to feel like you do. If you need a break all well and good but remember where we are.
hope you stick around you give a lot of support to a lot of people and i for one appriciate it,

Tammy I sat and cried with Dr New and that was why he said my self esteem was low....I know what you mean though...I feel motivated to do something ie slimming world and whilst my head is geared towards that I know that everytime I have felt that way in the passed I have never lost a sausage....I just feel between a rock and a hard place...I am sure when I have seen Mr Ammori I will know better how I stand....((hugs)) for being so patient with me lol...Linda x
