Hi everyone.

19 days out from my bypass and generally problem-free, but I’m not a very happy post-opper! :(

I know it’s bad to make comparisons with others, and that it’s early days, but things really are looking a bit bleak right now.

Since my surgery I’ve followed everything to the letter…and only lost a measly 6lbs! Although obviously I’ve failed with conventional diets for years, I could have probably lost this same amount AND had the luxury of actually eating!

Luckily I did manage to lose another 6lbs on the pre-op diet, but when I read about people losing stones in the first few weeks, I begin to feel a bit disheartened…and then skip to the extreme and think ‘what if I’m one of the failure stories you hear about?’.

Some advice as to where I’m going wrong would be greatly appreciated, or maybe just to hear from someone who has had a similar experience would be reassuring.

Meanwhile I’ll trudge on through purees :sigh:

Although I had a band rather than a bypass, I think that we're told the same. Mainly I was assured that the first month and a half is much much more about allowing healing to take place, I should think even more so for Bypass patients. It really is such early days, I think we all feel similar in that having an op is at the end of many years of struggling with weight and feeling like everything is slipping by you, however, its really important not to write yourself off yet!!! A lot of how you feel maybe due to the huge effect of making the decision to go for surgery and the waiting , the worry etc then really being major keen to get rid off all the weight..Don't put yourself under so much pressure because having read some of the other peoples threads on here, things do improve and I'm sure this feeling will pass as you get over that first month. I have worries like that too, I'm sure we all do now and then. Maybe posting here and reading how others are coping in the same situation will help to reassure you that the weight WILL go and we'll all be slim and fantastic before we know it. Much love , Neen x

Hi jensicle

Don't be sad......... you may be holdign water, you can stillbe very swollen but what you have to look at most importantly is that the weight you have lost is gone forever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi jensicle,

It is good that all is going very well for you.

And well done on losing 12lbs!!!

I am a slow loser and the one thing I have learned is that we can not compare our weight loss to anyone else even though we all do...:p

As we all lose weight differently and things like height, frame size, activity, gender along with age all seem to have an influence.

To keep your focus it helps to take before photos, body measurements and to set both big goals and mini goals along with keeping a diary of how you are getting along from day to day.

When you tick off a mini goal it is nice to treat yourself to something non food like a book, manicure, new top etc.

Weight yourself once a week and if you are weighing at home do it first thing in the morning with no clothes on and after the loo and you will get a pretty accurate reading.

No point in weighing too often as the weight fluctuates throughout the day and from day to day.

Set up a weight tracker and keep track of your weight loss.

It is natural to have post op blues as regardless of what type of operation you have this is a very common side effect.

Here is a link to help you set up a weight tracker.

Hi Jensicle,
Sorry to hear that you're unhappy about your weightloss. Look at it this way, at least it's 12 pounds that you will never see again. I have found that water retention can slow my weight loss. Also, I joined a gym to do light cardio exercise 2 weeks post op (have a read of my thread if you like). Do you exercise? Even walking helps.

Hi, honestly don't worry my weight comes off some weeks and stays the same others. according to the specialist nurse at the hospital this is perfectly normal. My trick was to abandon the scales rather than stepping on them 20 times a day! the weight has to come off and it's early days for you. they say that 2-3 stone within 8 weeks is normal so you are well on target. keep your chin up and keep positive x
