Hi,

After being recommded by LESLEYDB (who i met through The Dibb) I have finally decided to post after much lurking over the last week or so. Thanks Lesley.

I have an appointment with Dr Galloway at the Nuffield in Glasgow in a couple of weeks time to see about having a Gastric Band. Unfortunatley I am not in the correct "Postcode" for this to be considered under the NHS so I am having to go private....

I have been thinking of surgery for the last few years and finally decided on trying to get the gastric band earlier this year. My dad passed away earlier this year from cancer and I decided I had to lose this weight and be healthy for my family so my daughter doesn't have to go through something like this one day with me :(

Anyway I have read loads about the operation but wondered if someone can help me with a few questions - please..

Has anybody been to see Dr Galloway?
If you are paying for it can they say no?
How long to wait for Private?
What questions should I ask at consultation?
What is the recovery time in terms of time of work? Do you tell work why you are off?

One last thing - how do I get a jazzy signature.

sorry lots of questions.

Thanks

Sam

firstly let me say welcome to mini's you have found a great source for support and advice.

The only reasons for a private company to turn you down would be a low BMI to start with, and that they considered surgery on you at that time to be a huge risk.

Once you have spoken to the consultant and decided you want to have WLS through them you can pick an op date that he is free on and settle your account with them (full fee) the date could be just a few days after everything has cleared through the system ( thats immediate they work fast for your money) or you might want to wait a few weeks/month ect to ensure you have help around the home when you come out of hospital. Recovery time varies for everyone, and as a bypasser i can't say wht the norm is for a bander

Hi Doves
Welcome to Mini's.
I had my band on Saturday and have to say it went well in terms of pain etc. I feel that I could go back to work Monday no problem (work in an office).
I am also Private, and found that it was really quick for me to get a date of the Surgeon. I could have gone to meet the Surgeon and the Bareatric Nurse within 2 weeks and had my Op within 2 weeks from then, I did however set my own date later due to commitments.
As you are paying you have choices, like for e.g I asked could I go down first for Surgery and my Surgeon said yes.
As for work I told them why I was going in and used my own leave. If I was NHS I woud have got time allowed, but if not NHS they look at it as Cosmetic Surgery which is our own choice. I wasn't bothered about this as I didn't expect them to give me the time, they have however been very supportive of me and have offered me shorter days if needed when I return etc... I won't be needing them as I am fine.

The best advice I can give you is research the Surgeon as he is the first priority then go from there. I chose Basil Amouri at Spire Manchester as if you google him you will see why, he has a lot of fans on this site too.
Don't rush, take your time and goodluck.
Go with reputation.

Hi Sam
Welcome from a fellow Glasgwegian to minis. It really is a great site to be part of. I'm due to have a bypass op by Mr Ammori on 7th August and am travelling to Manchester only because there is a distinct lack of surgeons in Glasgow who carry out this op. Nuffield in Glasgow is the "specialist hospital" in weight loss so i'm sure you will be in good hands. I also spoke to my GP about Scottish surgeons and Dr Galloway and Mr Stuart at Rosshall was the two she mentioned. I once tried to go through NHS in Glasgow a good few years back and attended the Royal Infirminary. Wait for it under the watchful eye of "professer LEAN" how's that for a name for a top weight loss expert! The process was long and mentally stressful so if you can go private i would reccommend it especially in Glasgow. When i enquired about waiting times ( privately) i was told i could get it done very quickly. As Liz says take your time google the surgeons and do your research as going privately tends not to make time a prob. There are so many helpful and supportive people on this site so you have def come to the right place. Sorry can't help with the IT skills i'm useless lol xx

Hi Doves

Welcome to Mini's :)

Can't help with your enquiry as Im in London and still waiting bypass lol!
