2) Should I start taking any vits before op? If so which ones?
3) Why we not allowed diet pop or chewing gum? Has anyone had it? If so what happens? Do we explode?

Mini pill should be fine
Berocca multi -vits after the op
Have tried chewing gum a couple of times and been fine (just don't swallow it!) Had no fizzy - dare not try!
GRIPE WATER - great for post op wind pain - had shares in the stuff. Oh and light philli cheese - couldn't stand it before, now addicted :)

1) Will I be able to swallow my mini pill ok after surgery?,i dont take it so cant answer that lol

2) Should I start taking any vits before op? If so which ones?i took well woman just because its the best one and i always do

3) Why we not allowed diet pop or chewing gum? Has anyone had it? If so what happens? Do we explode?.like Emma said not good for band plus the bubbles and chewing action cause our tummies to bloat so not good for overall health of a banded tummy

4) What was your most useful thing that you used/had after surgery that you couldn't imagine not having?,a sports bra !! ,the bones in my bra were a no go got this yip of another bandster and was a god send took it in to hospital and wore it for a week post op

Hiya Dee.
1) Yes your pill is fine
2) I didn't take vits till after op but im sure it will only help
3) Fizzy drinks and chewing gum cause air into your pouch hence pain and bad wind. Plus the chewing gum gives a false signal leading to the stomach thinking its going to get food which gets the gastric juices flowing.
4) Agree with Ali her diary is amazing so read it! Gripe water defo and someone to rub your back like a baby who is getting winded best thing ever really does work better than gripe water. You could also use peppermint cordial which is really good too. x

Hi gang

I'm a bypasser so dont really count on this one, found i can drink coke ok, and the winding thing works too.

TTFN ;)

1, ive taken the mini pill with no problems at all 3 years after banding.
2, i take a 1 a day multi vit, it must be taken at all times wether you have restriction or not as it covers you long term for the difficult times.
3, i didnt drink no gassy pop for the 1st 12 months as the gas fills the pouch im ok with coke now for some reason it do not effect me now, i dont have chewing gum as you swallow alot of saliver making the pouch full of spit not good in the early stages.
4,the knowledge and my out look and perspective of how i look at food and the relationship i had with food and what its become now.

ive tryed to answer all the questions honestly from my perspective as a bander, but we are all different !

best wishes

For the last questions, BENEFIBRE :D Yes ok I can hear the regulars moaning already, here goes Shel on another benefibre rant, does she own the company or sommat? :D Well, after the surgery you'll be prone to bowel 'ups and downs' and the last thing you want after the op is to feel like a constipated cheshire loaf. I started with benefibre straight after discharge, one dose a day every day and it has kept me regular, which considering I have IBS is a miracle.

i take all pills no problem
i took vitamins pre op wasnt told to post op but it seems most people do
i not tried chew gum or pop but not a fan of either anyway but i think they bugger band or something
most usefull thing for me has been preparing meals and freezing them usually i do it after iv eaten on a sunday make casseroles and veg for week ahead then im not tempted to eat leftovers and can control portion size as in the bit when u have no restriction you will get hungry! the other tip is get up as quick as possible after the op it really hurts but you will feel better for it

Serenity thats a really good idea to freeze the meals and always have some on hand it makes a big difference if you plan ahead something I always try to do with taking packed lunches to work, my son spends a fortune a week when there is enough stuff in to have a variety of meals each day and not just a dreaded cheese butty. He is saving for a new car now and I think he has started to see the light! xx

now don't laugh, but I keep an inventory on my laptop of what is in my cupboards and freezer. I can then plan meals for the next few days and know exactly what we're having and make sure if anything needs defrosting it gets defrosted in plenty of time. It has saved me a fortune as our freezer is full to bursting and so are the cupboards so have only spent about £30 on shopping so far this month!

Hi Dee,

Im a bander too. I managed to take the pill after surgery no probs. I still drink pop - low calorie ones, but its virtually flat by the time I drink it and it's fine. I dont chew gum, so couldnt share that one with you!
As for food ideas, Im looking for a few of those myself! My restriction is quite severe (8.5ml), so things like mash potato is a bit of a struggle (actually all potato is!), I can eat some pasta but struggle with spaghetti and anything with a skin (peel) like cucumber, tomatoes, peppers I can chew and chew, but have to spit the peel out as cant swallow it.

Keep at it and it will eventually click into place!

Hi thanks for that info. Is that right that you cant swallow those things surely you should be able to swallow mash potatos?!!!!?

Dee x

Hi Dee,

I can swallow roughly a teaspoon of mash, but after that I would suffer! Its more to do with the bulk of it all and believe me it sticks!!!

I have had a severe restriction though (8.5ml compared to other half who is 7.0ml) his weight seems to be dropping off and he eats whatever he wants where as I eat salads, some fruit and the weight doesnt move (although I havent gained weight which is a bonus!)

If Im honest, I dont actually miss eating potatoes, neither do I miss eating bread or spaghetti. I eat rice more than anything else.
I hope this helps.
