SHOULD I FEEL GUILTY?

I have my first appointment next month, I am hoping for banding or even bypass on NHS. My husband has worked all of his life(since leaving school)and me since children were older and paid our dues. Should I feel guilty if NHS pay for my WLS.

NO YOU SHOULDNT, now never ever ever say that again lol, The NHS would have to pay for your surgery if you needed knee replacements, heart bypasses for being overweight and things like long term diabeties medications, How much money have the NHS spent on smoking cessation and sexually transmitted diseases, methadone for drug users etc etc you are overweight and require surgery to make you live a healthier and happier life (BIOPSYCHOSOCIAL health) by having this surgery you will save the NHS a fortune in the long run, The NHS would dtill treat someone if they had lung cancer caused through smoking, or someone who had stolen a car then crashed it subsequently requiring treatment.
Am i making sense lol
The other thing is that because you asked the question you think your weight issues is soley down to you and therefore you feel like you are taking advantage of the system this is not true, being obese has just been proven to be genetically imprinted on our DNA before birth as is some heart deffects etc and we would still treat those and offer surgery if conventional methods of treatment had failed, some people have food addictions and some people comfort eat this may be due to upbringing or coping mechanisms, we would treat people with menatal health illness, so why not treat you.
YOU ARE JUST AS IMPORTANT AS THE NEXT PERSON, DO NOT LET ANYONE TELL YOU OTHERWISE.

You deserve this to be happy and like you said you have worked all your life why shouldnt the NHS pay.

take care
Helen

Hi Helen, most of the things you have mentioned never even crossed my mind. I have tried not to be a burden to the NHS. None of what you have mentioned I have had other than weight related issues. When I think back to my child hood maybe it was my lower class upbringing that caused me to be overweight. Chips with sausage, egg, fish, fish cakes, fish fingers, chopped pork and beans. Me and my sisters laugh now, but they are thin and i am not,. I am not laughing now. Is it genetic or our upbringing?

Not one to mince my words ... NO!

I totally agree with what helen said. I also think it is partly to do with our upbringing as a child we were always told to clear our plates and that is a hard habit to break almost 50 years later. We waste so much food these days that was unheard of when I was a child and it could have a bearing BUT its not the only reason for being obese just a factor in my opinion...xx

I also agree with Helen. Like Charliegirl my upbringing on food has been my downfall. Burgers and chips, sausage and chips, stodgy puddings etc. Yes my parents could have provided healthier options but would I have eaten them? As soon as I had money from a job I would be spending it on sweets. Here I am at 42 waiting for WLS and trapped in a body I don't like and hate having to carry around. However, like Helen says, I have paid into the NHS all my working life and now its payback time, so don't feel that cos your weight is your problem, you should have to pay for WLS privately. Do smokers pay privately when they have cancer? No - its NHS. I don't smoke or drink - food is my only vice. This is where I need support from the NHS

Hi Janie

I agree with what helen said, but i can relate where you are coming from,i had a failed bypass due to my liver being to fatty,i then had a intragastric balloon inserted and i felt so guilty that i had,had 2 proceedures on NHS,i mentioned this to my dietician on the day of the 2nd proceedure and she told me to stop feeling guilty she said there is a money pot put to one side for people like us wanting help towards loosing weight.
But i had to smile on your comments about your childhood,i remember my mum used to deep fry everything that needed frying and it was all done in lard,i worked in a chip shop as a saturday/sunday job and everything was also cooked in lard, but i dont know about you but i didnt have a weight problem then lol.
I have 3 younger brothers and 2 of them are like rakes the 3rd is built like a brick s**t house, maybe i just got the wrong genes :D.

Di

Simple answer - no you should not.

I think you should replace the word guilty with grateful, and lose the word should too...;)

I do think genes play a part, my mum was overweight when I was a child me and my middle sister were like rakes whereas my elder sister was always overweight.....I did not start to retain weight until I turned 40 so I guess I was really lucky but saying that it refused to budge whatever I did....I strongly believe its a combination of many different things...oh and chips fried in lard are delicious lol....(not that I will be having any)...xx

simple answer NO you should not feel guilty. my bypass was funded by the NHS and not only have i worked and payed my dues but my health issues associated with obesity have reduced therefore saving the NHS money in the long run. don't feel gulity x
