Hope this helps, :)

Wilkinsons have the tins on special at the moment for £2.24, I got 2 tins last week and going to get some more this week. I still have 4 tins from there last offer which are a few weeks out of date so my hubby is using them for breakfast.

I think I am going to use them for breakfast and lunch and have a evening meal on the night as I need to lose 5-10% before I will get to the next stage with the hospital which will be the surgeon.

Then why are slimfast recommended by dietians to bypass patients if they do not like fortimel???

Again it depends on yr surgons recommendationd but the surgeon that helen and i had dosn't recommend fortimal because again it has 8.1g of sugar per 100g and we are advised to have no more than 5g of sugar and fat per 100g. to to recommend either slim fast or fortimal would contridict his advice.

there is no difference between fortimel and slimfast nutrition wise the sugars are lactose sugars and are ok to have. our hospital recommend them if you can't stomach fortimel. I am extremely sensitive to sugar and have not dumped on any of the slimfasts.

slimfast has 7.4g of sugar per 100g
fortimel has 8.1 g per 100g

and slimfasts are nearly twice the size as a fortimel

Absolute waist of money - any form of liquid replacement defeats the object of the restrictive properties of your pouch, weather your a bander or bypasser, the whole idea is to fill your pouch with solid foods that stay in there for a period of time, thus keeping you full and preventing hunger between meals.

The only time i'd probably agree to liquid replacement is during the first 2 weeks post op when your restricted to a liquid diet, or after a band fill when your again restricted to a liquid diet for a period of time.

Thumbs up, I agree :D:)

Some of us are on liquid diets for 4 weeks not just 2 and then sloppy/pureed foods for a further 4 weeks as per our surgeon and are advised to take fortimel/slim fast until we are on a normal diet and can tolerate food well.

Yeah agree, i was quoting my own criteria as i was told liquid for 2 weeks, sloppy for 2 weeks before re introducing solids, each are different.

I dont know what fortimel is, never had it and it sounds like the devils food to me !

My consultant didn't say i had to do anything special, so no special liquids, no special protein suppliments and nothing to replace food. I guess he knows his stuff as its worked for me and others under him !

Still i've rather eat a barbequed squirrel than a fortimel shake any day lol :8855:

Natural ways to increase protein intake while on liquids without supplements:

Add powdered skim milk to tea/coffee/hot choc in addition to fresh milk to make it high in protein.

Use drinking yogurts.

In thin soups add parmesan cheese to increase protein.

Also, add more milk if you like milk, great source of protein.

Dr. Ammori lists Build-up shakes & Complan shakes as an option directly post-op to boost protein. I think many of the powdered shake mixes are nicer than those two products and have more protein but to each their own.

As for the protein shots, try diluting them in a jug of water, add a bit of sugar free squash and sip it over several hours.

For puree stage, put cheese in everything, poof more protein. Also if you are a dairy lover, stock up on yogurt, cottage cheese and ricotta. Shrimp salad pureed is loaded with protein, eggs are also bril but take it slow since some people do struggle eating eggs early post-op. If you like egg drop soup, you can add a whisked egg to chicken broth, stir until the egg is lovely ribbons, then add a dash of soy sauce, voila you have a very high protein soup.

Those are just some ideas. Let me know if you need more.

Hi I have my op next friday do I need to stock up on slimfast, I quite like them. also what other liquids do I need soups ect. G.M:D

To be really honest with you i wouldn't go out and stock pile anything till you need it, i found that my tastes changed imidiately post op, soups and things i liked pre op i couldn't stand post op, the only thing i could tollerate pre and immidiately post was tomatoe soup. So i'd wait, otherwise you might find you end up with a cuboard full of soups and things
