I didn't have to lose any as I had already lost 8 kilos between seminar & first appointment, I think that this may be the norm.. the better you do the more likely they will not set you a weight loss target.

Lindy, the norm is around 5KG (abt 11lb). Well that's what myself and my mam were given. But we really went for it and lost more. I wish you the same luck xxx

The average is about 5kg target weight loss between 1st and 2nd appointment (approx 6months apart) which will be given by dietician at first appointment when you will see her and either consultant/registrar to discuss what your expectations are for surgery. Start looking at your eating habits now maybe keep a food diary (and be honest with yourself including bad eating habits/food weakness) as its easier to see problem areas when its written down, also try to cut back on refined carbohydrates (bread/pasta/white rice) and takeaway's (if you eat them frequently), instead increase protein sources/fresh vegetables/salads, you might even manage to lose a decent amount before 1st appointment. It will certainly impress the team if you can show you have begun lifestyle changes needed to successfully lose weight.

Its strange how it works at times, I've known a few people who have been fast tracked for surgery if they've lost weight between seminar and first appointment yet I know another lady who lost nearly 2 and half stone in between hers and is still going through the same lengthy process as the rest of us. She had her siminar in Mar 2010, was put on the waiting list in April 2011 and has just recently had her endoscopy so has possibly got another good few months to wait for a date. There doesn't seem to be much in the way of regularity at SRH

I am totally with youi there Debz,
there is something seriously wrong with the system here when some patients sail through their surgery without delays ,cancellations or " clerical errors" - some are indeed having their surgery well within the alloted time whilst others have constant delays, multiple cancellations and heartbreaking dissapointments whilst we are in the hands of the appointments system.
The system here seems generally to lack fairness - all things considered- if we were not members of such forums as this we would be blissfully unaware of the way that things are progressing.
Ok ,, tests need to be done, meetings take place and results recieved but in all, the times that some patients are having to wait is nothing short of unfair.

Fell I must add that I had documented evidence of weight loss prior to attending seminar as advised by my local drs and had also seen and be cleared by a cardiologist, lung specialist as well as my diabetic consultant. As an ex nurse myself I am guessing that the system is actually "fair" based on assessment of individual needs, co-morbid symptoms, past treatment and medical history Hope I have not upset folk each persons journey is individual to them and the team is my guess

Girls I can totally understand how you feel. My mam was first refered 27 months ago and is having her surgery in 10 days so it's been one hell of a wait for her with all of the above problems. I on the other hand from GP refferal to surgery waited only 13 months. I was so frustrated for my mam when I got my date as I was expecting a wait as long as her. She was extatic that I was having mine but I also saw the dissapointment in her face when I told her, but who could blame her..? I noticed when I was in, the average wait time of those admitted at the same time as me was 12-15 months. I don't know what they are doing but there is a clear flaw in their system. What I say girls and boys is get on the phone and nag nag nag..!
