Take away food

Had my first official check up/appointment with the weight loss team who did my bypass. Six weeks on including the pre op liquid diet and I've lost 30lbs which I'm so pleased about. My Doc said I could have a glass of wine so I thought ok, I'll give it a go. We had been out for the day and got back late. Hubby and kids voted for a chippy/Chinese takeaway. I obviously didn't order anything but did sample a very small amount of theirs?!?!? Had some soft noodles, 2 chips with curry cut up very small and a tiny piece of sausage. Took ages to eat but tasted nice, although really did notice the fatty, monosodium glutomate aftertaste. Had my glass of wine as planned a good hour after. Went to bed feeling fine. Woke this morning again feeling fine, only had my cup of tea when I got downstairs. After about 2 hours I began with the feeling of needing to pay a visit but it was an urgent need to go, almost like I was going to have (sorry people) the runs!! Pain and waves of cramps were really bad, akin I'd even say to childbirth type pains. So bad at times, I even cried out. I did 'do something' but wouldnt say it was the sort of bowel movement that would normally go with this type of awful pain/cramping. I'm pretty sure this was an after effect of too much fat even though consumed a small amount, but wanted others comments and to see if bypassers find that takeaways are now a thing of the past?

Cheers guys xx

claire where are you upto with yr eating. If yr only 4 weeks post op you should only just be going onto soft food. also try to remember that anything you eat at this stage should be of good nutritional value. High protien and low carb.
I do have the odd chinese takeaway but tend to have special chow mein but mainly the meat and veg very little noodles.
It could be that the wine had a dehydrating effect on you its also quite high sugar.
There is life after bypass but take it easy.
take care

Hi Claire,
I had some chinese (very small amount) when I was allowed solids. It's usually the fat in a takeaway that makes you want to go. I often have that after a takeaway. I doubt the noodles did you much good as I used to suffer big time when I first tried pasta. It really is trial and error, but don't worry, it's normal.

I agree with what the ladies said. The amount you can tolertate of fat at 4 weeks is less than what you can tolerate at say 8 weeks. You are also more sensitive to alcohol (which dumps undigested into you intestines after bypass) in the early weeks so it may have been just a case of a little too much (full-fat curry sauce, sausage, chips + wine all in one go) and a little too soon. A good rule is to only try one new thing at a time, that way you are sure what caused you to feel ill and can re-try that thing again later. Have patience, most all things will be tolerated in tiny amounts eventually but may not be just yet and with such variety.

Nic:p

aww claire i am sure as the others have said things will improve, 5 weeks on is still early days.

My fingers are crossed as i took my niece and sister out for Dim Sum in Chinatown today, i was careful and took the rice noodles/pasta covering off, but it was definately a lot of fresh tastes since my bypass. I drank one cup of chinese tea with mine and my niece surprised me by drinking several and enjoying it. LOL i had to point out to my sister that the meal was about cathryn trying new things not about her, as my sister is not very advenurous when it comes to food.

I was a little flushed after eating and was burping a bit but not actually 'dumped' so i am rather pleased, just need to see what i am like in the morning

cheers for all your comments. I knew I'd rushed things a bit and I got what I deserved really. Its easy when things are picking up and you begin to feel more able than you obviously are, to try more adventurous stuff. Old habits die hard I suppose and all part of the process in learning. My doc has told me if I dont feel hungry, dont eat and as long as I'm hydrated and taking my vits I'll be ok. I'm certainly happy to do that which is a strange way to feel after years of feeling hungry!!!

Claire just make sure your protien intake is maintained otherwise you will lose muscle tone and you do not really want that now do you.

I don't feel hungery at all which would mean me never eating if i fiollowed your Dr's advice

It is hard at first to go from eating when the clock tells us its meal times to eating when we are hungry but it will all come to you eventually. I waited almost 14 weeks after my op to have some alcohol, but that was only because I dont drink in the house and was scared it would not sit right with me if in company. There was no problems. I also have a special treat of a chinese and stick to noodles or a curry but restrict the rice as that does not sit right. A bit of what you fancy does you good....xx

I am still trying to work out how to get the recommended amount of protein with only eating very little. I add low fat cheese to soup and stuff now. What is the recomended amount for a female to have a day. I have tryed a couple of chips when the rest of the family have them and have been ok but it was only 2 lol

What also if the reccommended sugar and fat per 100g?

Thanx

Recommended no more than 5g fat or sugar per 100g.

I aim for 80g protein per day personally. Nic (PG) knows how to work out the protein amounts.

Hi Claire - Thats what i was told to, if you dont feel like eating dont, provided you stay hydrated it wont hurt you ! and to be honest it hasn't hurt me !

At 4 weeks post op your probably pushing your luck a bit :D but this is all a big learning curve, and we all react different to things, then when you think you have it cracked something throws you a curve ball. Still a bit of dodgy botty isn't the end of the world and nothing an imodium wont sort out :D if longer term you find the fat content to hard to take, then you need to decide if eating this kind of food is worth the runs the next day ?

next time try dim sum or go for plain boiled rice etc rather than fat fried foods

Richard i bet you have been to New World on Gerrard street haven't you? wonderfull place for Dim sum.... claire come visit lol i will show you some real treats when it comes to food... and I do believe me might pull richard in for the visit as well....

No no no - if you think New world is good then you gota go to Yauatcha on Broadwick street W1F 0DL - the dim sum is exceptional ( though not cheap as it has a michelin star) :D but its not to pricey as you cant really eat that much, they do duck, shark, tuna, ostrich and lobster dim sum, its to die for !

OMG Richard you HAVE to come here lol and show me more places, you have just mentioned all those great foods in one breath. Somewhere like that would have freaked my sister out totally, so New World was ideal, but me i would be in heaven

The formula is 1.25g of protein per kilogram of ideal weight (if you now weigh 217lbs but your ideal weight is 155) you divide your ideal weight by 2.2 (in my example the total would be 155/2.2=70.45). You use your ideal weight because you do not need to feed you fat cells so you don't count them. Then you multiply it by 1.25g (70.45x1.25=88) which gives you the total grams of protein needed per day to feed your muscle (for me it is 88g).

So in real terms your talking about 3oz of protein which equals about 1 chicken breast based on your own calculation !

OMG this is more complicated than i thought!!!

I must admit i went out for a family meal two nights ago and was really struggling with the menu (pub meal) as i'm still on soft stage.

I ordered a lasagne off the light bites and removed the top layer of pasat which had all the melted cheese on it. I just figured I wasn't gonna finish it all anyway so i removed the worst part. I was fine with it and finished about two thirds of what was left. It felt so good being out and eating kinda normal.

I've been invited to a works doo at a tapas bar in town but don't know what to do cos its a buffet at 20 quid per head, i don't want to spend that much when I probably can't eat most of it, I might phone and ask of they can do me a portion of something like coconut prawns for myself, do you reckon i'd be ok with that?

Hi mintball
great to hear how well you are doing.
At yr stage of my journey if eating out i was inclined to stick to things i had already tried at home so that i knew i had more chance of it agreeing with me. I find tapas brilliant as they are all little portions. do work know about yr op if i were you i would speak to the person organising it and explain due to yr recent surgery you are limited to what and how much you can eat and not to book you a meal but still include you in the evening. That way you can see if there is anything you fancy and order yr own if you feel like it.
equally if you want to socialise and be able to drink be it alcholic or not its probably better that you dont eat.
you will soon be running with the rest of them just enjoy the company.

I won't be drinking on that night out, but saying that. I'm going to Manchester next week and we're just having a light bite to eat and sharing a bottle of wine....how do you get round the drinking AND eating thing....can you do both together?
