IM so so upset, the doctor has told me for the third time I don't qualify for the Suffolk criteria.

No one wants to help me and my pain is so bad all the time.

I feel completely hopeless now :(

Oh no, I'm really sorry to hear this, I know how much you wanted this.
Don't give up hope yet though, have you tried writing to your MP ,or trying to get the decision over turned?
* hugs*
Em xxx

Hi em, I already wrote to my mp but it doesn't seem to have helped :(

Now looking to see if there's any charity grants that could help but I'm clueless xx

Maybe you don't fit the criteria for the bypass, but have they offered you something else such as a band? I would change doctors if I was you, I had to change 3 times until I found one that would help me. Having said that I did move areas too so maybe that helped also. Is you heart set on a bypass, maybe if you go down another WLS route you might get more help? Good luck with it all.. keep the faith x

Sorry to hear you have been turned down, Have you appealed?

hi love i am so sorry but criteria change all the time, just keep an eye on the nice guidelines or failing that do you have an aunt in an area with a lower criteria that you could move in with for a few months xxx

Hi hun, that would have been an option a few years ago but I have a 29 month old now so can't move anywhere xx

I'm a Suffolk girl, what were they reasons for turning you down? did they say.
Also not wanting to be too nosy, but what are your reasons for wanting the surgery? (I'm diabetic and have sleep apnea)

I had to appeal first time and then my doctor realised that they hadn't taken my diabetes into consideration is there anything they ave missed for you??

Gmomes, I have hypermobility syndrome and poor mobility and live in pain, made worse by weight and I can't excersize and I injure myself easy.

They say to qualify I need type 2 diabetes or sleep apnea.. I've never been tested for either so I'm gonna ask doc to test me.

Where in Suffolk are you? I'm near stowmarket x

So sorry to hear this, I don't get this, it really frustrates me, what is the point of having to apply to an "exceptional funding panel" if they aren't ever going to approve cases that are outside the box. What have they offered you so far? When I was refused the panel suggested I be referred to a specialist obesity clinic first. I am assuming you have tried everything available like tablets and working with a dietician?

i was turned down twice xx have the tests it doesn't say on your profile how heavy you are or what bmi is ? type 2 is very common in overweight and sleep aponea i had both after tests xx i also have mobility problems have rheumatoid arthiritis and fybromyalgia so know what you mean about exercise and pain etc Good Luck and best wishes xx

Hi Mooncake
I'm in Felixstowe.

Been having a bit of a look for you and Suffolk PCT goes by Nice guidelines and not their own, so I have copied straight from NICE's own website what their criteria is ........

The NICE guidelines state that bariatric surgery should be offered to patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 35-40 who have other conditions caused by being overweight, such as diabetes and obstructive sleep apnea, those with a BMI of 40-50 with no other weight related conditions or those with a BMI of 50 and over, as a first-line treatment.

As you can see it states 'such as' which would fit for your problem, the only thing is, is your problem caused by you being overweight ?? so without prying as long as your BMI is over 35, there should be no reason for not referring you.

Hi mooncake I'm so sorry to hear about this you must be so frustrated. As said before I would change my gp and see how things go. I really do hope you get sorted Hun, good luck xxx

The letter I had this morning contradicts that info tho...

My BMI is 42... I'm 19 stone

They say I need co morbities..

Háve booked a telephone call with the doc for thurs and il mention this to him

I'm so frustrated that I'm not getting any help AT ALL :,(

You def have a case, just quote the guidelines at them, they have to follow this.
So am I right in thinking it's the PCT who have turned you down 3 times and not the fact your Dr won't refer you?? Sorry slightly confused??
If it is the PCT, ask them if they have changed their referral criteria in the last few years, if no, then they are wrong, if yes get them to send you the new criteria, but it still states on their website they follow the NICE guidelines.

Hope this helps xx
