Variance in rates of weight loss?

Any thoughts on why some people lose weight so much faster than others?

I need cheering up as I'm worrying I might be the first bypasser in history not to lose weight quickly.

Initially, start weight makes a big difference. Put simply, the more you have to lose, the faster it goes in the first 2 months.

From 3-4 months onwards, some people slow down because they are eating the wrong foods. You can get away with eating lots of carbs and cr@p in the early days and still have good losses, so some people get stuck in the habit of eating junk and then the losses slow down drastically.

Basically, if you follow the plan and get your head in the right place then there is no reason for it to fail.

I was told that you lose an average of 3 - 7lbs a week during the first few months. I was also told that everyone loses at different levels and that to expect the weight loss to stop for a couple of weeks fairly early on before it starts again. At the beginning - first couple of weeks, I lost 1lb a day, then I stopped weighing myself every day (the best thing to do) and I lost 9lbs, 3lbs, 3lbs, 5lbs and this week - nothing. Saw the surgeon who said that was because I had been dehydrated and had rehydrated myself by drinking like a fish.

i had my surgery may 13th including pre-op diet i lost 28lbs in 4wks, since then which is 10days on i havent lost anything :-(

Lisa - if you are doing everything right the way your bariatric team want you to do then your weight will come off. Don't forget your body has been through alot and in some people it just takes a little longer to get the message through to the new plumbing.

Don't worry after i have my op I WILL be the slowest loser on the losers bench!!!! lol but do you know what it really doesn't matter as long as it's going in the downwards direction that will be fine with me.

Sending you hugs with fairy dust to cheer you up and make you sparkle x

Hi Lisa
Remember that loseing to quickly doesn't give the skin time to adjust and can end up with lots of excess, you have done very very well in 7 weeks you have lost 25lb on average that is 3.5lb per week which is over the recommended normal which is 2lbs per week...so don't get despondent you are moving in the right direction and unless you put weight on then you must be doing something right!!

Well done

thank you :)

I agree with what everyone else has said, it comes off in whatever time it wants to. All you have to do is eat a healthy diet, try and get some exercise if you can and listen to your body, when you are full stop, when you are thirsty you must drink because thirst is a sign that you have already started to dehydrate.

Different medical conditions and the variance of metabolism can make one lose faster/slower than others and even the docs can't always predict it. I for one was told that I might be a slow loser because of my PCOS but I have found that not to be true. So, just do your best to take good care of your body and the weight will all fall away in time.

Nic;)

I have been told that PG as I have PCOS.
Going to get some of the protein shots you recomend they are not cheap though, how many do you have per day??

Lisa stop worrying you are doing fanbloodytastic!!! And remember Rome wasn't built in a day and neither where we!! it goes on easy but not off, but we enjoyed putting it on eh!! Cheer up chick xxx

As a bander you shouldn't really need protein supplements, as it is very possible to get sufficient protein through your diet alone. It's a personal choice thing though, but remember too much protein is not good for you.

I use protein supplement on days I know that I have less than 45mg of protein. It might be when sometimes if I'm not feeling hungry (new one for me!) or when my TOTM is due when the band feels tighter (why this is I don't know). I also used some after getting a bit of grape skin stuck and couldn't eat for 36 hours (until I eventually threw up and out it came!).

I don't use it everyday which is good as it tastes awful.

I got the soya based protein mix from Holland and Barrett for just under a tenner.

yo yo i know its not what you want to hear but you have less to loose that some of the bigger loosers so it stands to reason that it will come off slower. Try not to compare as it really doesnt do your moral any good. you are doing really well and you will get there

That's how I reason it, HC. Men lose faster than women too, WLS or dieting. We are all different and our bodies do things differently (like some people dump after bypass and others don't).
