Hey everyone.

ANOTHER question

I've been advised to take Sanatogen Gold befor and after bypass surgery for the long term.

I just wanted to know what mineral / vitamins and calcium supplements everyone takes post bypass?

Thanks

Hayley

Interesting question, however I've been told not to take any till 6 weeks post surgery why is the advice so different? 6 weeks is quite a long time!

I take Forceval multivit/mineral gelcaps, calcichew, and lanzaprazole daily. I have a B12 injection monthly and my iron levels monitored.

Forceval is much higher doses and contains more variety of vits/mins than OTC ones like sanatogen, which is important when you have a malabsorptive surgery. Also, they are gelcaps, so you can take them immediately after discharge and they are broken down properly in your pouch unlike harder tablet and enteric coated ones. Especially enteric coated ones.

I've been told that I don't need to take Calcichew because I'm only 25 and my bones don't need that support quite yet. But will in a few years.

Sanatogen Gold - you can buy this in liquid for apparently, which would be better for me coz I struggle sometimes with swallowing tablets, even when they are broken in half

I don't know why people are told different things, but I've gotta start taking mine NOW to get me in the best possible shape for surgery :)

Can only tell you my instructions as everyone gets told something different it seems. All the suppliments were given to me on prescription as instructed by my surgeon in a letter to my GP.

For life starting at 2 weeks post-op:
1 Forceval (multi vit & mineral)
2 Iron (ferrous fumerate)
2 Calcichews (calcium carbonate & vit D3)

I was told to have my b-12 tested at 6 months, again at 1 year and the routinely every year for life. If I am found to be low, injections will be given every 3 months. So far I have been fine. I was also given supplements to help with hairloss starting at 3 months as needed, 3 dissolvable zinc tablets per day (solvazinc) and 10 mils per day of liquid selenium (selenase).

Shelbel - do you get the Forceval through your GP? I'd think you should be entitled to these and the protein powder via the GP after this type of surgery if you need it.

Yes, I get forceval on prescription and also fortification drinks which are high protein.

Me too! I also have zinc and selenium - I have the thinnest hair in the world and can't afford to lose any! Prevention is better than cure.....

I wonder why you can't take them prior to surgery?

(((hugs)))

Different advice from different surgeons. Weird

Dont think there is a right or wrong answer on this one. :)

Hi Haley, I'm sure you'll get loads of good advice from the bypassers here about your vits. Myself and bypassers where I had my band done were told to take Bassetts multi vitamins and mineral chewables but everyone get different advice from their provider. Good luckxxx
