I just asked this question 30 minutes ago its further down the thread :) head hunger is when you think you are hungry but you're not

lol i knw i seen it after id posted mine hehe gr8 minds think alike hun how r u today?

Head hunger can normally be fixed with a drink or doing something to distract you. Real hunger needs to be fixed with food! A common side effect of the bypass is that because the enzymes in your belly that cause hunger are bypassed, you lose your appetite - Im typical of this. Im five months almost post bypass and have had no appetite for about 3 months - this can make eating a chore - its totally bizarre!

Head hunger is the physical result of our emotional attachment to food and eating.

We often have emotional triggers that make us feel hungry or crave certain foods even when we know that we have eaten enough or are not yet due to eat again.

I work away from home quite a bit and used to binge out on sweets and food in the hotel room each night. Or when I had my hair cut on a Saturday my favorite chippy is just down the road. I used to get snipped and stuffed within 100 yards :D

So now even seven months on if I'm away from home I struggle with the almost overwhelming feelings of hunger and cravings even just after I've eaten.

If I'm getting a haircut even now seven months out and just after eating breakfast, I still crave Egg fried rice and curried chips from Kongs

These are examples of my head hunger. No real physical need to eat, just an emotional trigger that makes me think of certain foods, and how good it was to shove huge quantities down my gob.

These head hunger episodes tell me my emotional journey is lagging behind my physical one. The difference is I've recognised this and I'm better equipped to resist temptation and ignore these emotional triggers that would have got me before WLS

Good luck with your journeys guys

Agree with Karlos - head hunger too is when 'you really fancy it'..you are not hungry in the slightest but you really desire it. Want it but don't need it. And yes it does pass or at least lessen - I am sooo much better than I was a few weeks ago - and also you have associations to food linked to emotionsor activities..these have to change to stop the mental hunger too! It all changes with time....

Im not too bad Pinky I was in foul mood yesterday and p*ssed a few people off on here last night by the way I worded a certain comment, I should have known better but unfortunately I commented before I thought about it and how it would look and affect certain people on here, i've probably lost a few 'friends' because of it or people might see me differently :sigh: but thats just something I have to deal with its my own fault no-one elses...........................

I face head hunger, and now that I am over 10 months out I get real hunger as well which can make it tricky. It is a fight not to obey my naughty head and have some junk food, I won't lie to you about that. However because I have spent the better part of the last year preparing for and having this life-changing surgery, I have had time to examine my food triggers and address them. Some things I limit to very rarely (simple carbs & greasy food, alcohol), some things I have replaced with healthy choices (sugar-free ice cream, cake & candy) and other things I avoid completely (things that are high in sugar & fat like doughnuts, fizzy pop even the diet kind).

The difference now in my life is that I eat healthy, wholesome food 95% of the time which for me works. I have never been able to acomplish that before! The other 5% is made up of the less healthy foods in very small quatities and only once and awhile not every week. It is up to you how you plan to manage your post-op eating, some find it better to just completely avoid certain trigger foods because then they aren't tempted. That is also a good way to cope. Just pick what you think will work best for you and go for it. Head hunger can really be hard but if you are prepared for it then you can beat it. But it won't ever really go away, you will just teach yourself a different way to respond to it.

Nic;)
