Im not sure what i want to have done but i need a consultation somewhere first(private) how do you know which places are good(must be in the uk)Are the hospital group any good? x

Maybe if you put somemore detail on your current situation others can give you some input from their own experieces?

The Hospital Group are giving free consultations with surgeons at the moment, so you don't lose anything by seeing them

Sorry just seen a few of your other posts. Personally at 18 I think you are too young to be considering surgery. Is there a reason you can't go down the diet and exercise route? At least in the first instance. You won't get referred for surgery on the NHS until you have thoroughly exhausted all other options, which may include dieticians, exercise programmes, medication and psychological input.

I would imagine no ethical private surgeon would agree to surgery until you had been through all other options first either.

Surgery is no easy option and not a quick fix.

Hi, take the dietician if the doctor recommends it and then you can start building up a track record of your dieting history which will help if/when they refer you for surgery. You may even get some help with gym costs as part of the package a lot of health authorities do this now. I really wish I had been offered help at your age before I got type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. Good luck hun xxx

Thankyou for the replies :), ok so to add more detail.. I'm 18 years old, I've been overweight since I've been about 9 years old I've tried all sorts of diets ww sw cambridge atkins cabbage die 500 calorie diet I just never seem to be able to stay on a diet long enough to loose a decent amount of weight. I've joined 4 gyms over the years yet never manage to stick at it :( If I'm going to have something done it must be soon(private) as I feel like I've already wasted my life being unhappy about my weight/not being able to wear the things I like always being the *big girl* or *fat friend* everyday I feel like rubbish because of my weight yet I can't seem to loose the weight either :(x

I know someone who had her bypass at 22, I wish I'd done something sooner instead of waiting until I'm 42.
Lots of luck
Em xxxx

I can totally understand where you are coming from, and I know that these days it's even more soul destroying with all the celebrity images of what is considered acceptable. I have a much younger sister who suffered the same, she saw a picture of herself on her 21st birthday and resolved that she was never going to look like that again, she has worked really hard over the past three years, lost the weight and has just won a beauty pageant. She's an inspiration. I just think you need to work closely with your GP and with their support find a way you can do this yourself at the moment. At 18 you are still developing, physically, mentally and emotionally. Have you had any counselling or coaching to find out why you can't stick to a diet or exercise regime?

I'm not saying don't have surgery until you are in your 40's, just suggesting that with more help and support you may be able to do it yourself rather than go down the drastic surgery route, plus the feeling you would get if you did accomplish it yourself would be fantastic.

There are diet and exercise sections herefor support also, perhaps a post in there might give you some ideas x

Thanks :), I just don't want to spend anymore time being unhappy my mums not too happy about choosing surgery but says that a balloon or something like that? Would be good for me :Dx

I wish I had done this sooner also. I know 18 is a very delicate age, you want to build up your self esteem. Maybe try the lap band. It is not permanent then start eating right and exercising.
My surgery is Tues. I'm 57.,

The main thing is to do it through your doctor. Accept any resources they can give you. 18 is young but its a long road to get funding and you have carried this burden for half of your life already love. Start the weight management they give you because if you do go down the surgery route every pound you lose will make the op safer for you. The balloons are good but they are only short term you still need a long term plan xxx

if u dont mind me asking how much do u weigh and wot is your eatin pattern now do u snack or do u have big meal, if u have tryed everything and couldnt stick too it wot makes u think u can stick with this as it still needs work and willpower, i have band and its not straight forward . good luck with wot ever u do x

I can relate to how you feel having to get adult clothes when I was 10 years old was awful and a lifetime spent trying to lose weight getting depressed putting more weight on does take its toll. I could never recommend what is right for anyone due to not knowing what their life is like. Hope you get the best advice possible and choose the best path that will work in the long term for you, surgery is far from an easy option. Good luck xx
