Alcohol.....

Bluebutterflier

Bouncing Bander
Ok, I need to approach a subject that so far, ive seen as a bit hush hush on this site.....

Im not a big drinker...never have been...But before my surgery I used to go out on a Friday or Saturday night to a rock/alternative pub...and drink Jamesons whiskey and coke - maximum of the night of approx 5-6 of them....but that wasn't every week, but maybe one day a week or fortnight. (of course Im not allowed fizzy drinks now- or well im avoiding them, so id have to change my choice of alcohol)

I dont drink at home unless I have a party/dinner with people...and if that is the case, its more than likely one drink.

Now, im almost 2 weeks post op, feeling a lot better and people are wanting to see me etc....So tomorrow is my first time out - not to a pub/bar/club but to a Alternative market....But it goes on to a party in the evening. So im not sure if I should have anything or not yet....

I done various diets for years, and Weight watchers always left memorable points/calories in my head...So I know things like a spirit & Diet mixer is one point, but so is a glass of wine (not sweet wine)....

I'm thinking Beer/Cider - anything on tap basically - is out as its fizz.
So is mixers of fizz...

Now, I do like Malibu, So perhaps that with Orange or pineapple juice. (id possibly in a whole evening out, sip it, so approx 4 I would have)
(White rum is ok with me....but I cant do vodka it gives me a headache)

Perhaps white wine or rose wine?

So here's my questions:

  • Am I allowed Alcohol yet?
  • If not, when is advisable?
  • What alcoholic drinks do people drink after they have had bariatric surgery....

Obviously a lot of people avoid alcohol for dietary/calorific matters or because alcohol effects us more if we have had surgery.....But Im 34yrs old, its part of my life when i'm out socialising, and its not like I drink a lot anyways.

My personal feeling (so obviously not actual advice!) would be to at least wait until you're past all the stages so you know what your band would tolerate. Also, would probably try it at home rather than in public the first time.

I don't drink, so apologies if this is not what others will say, but I would avoid it altogether for the first year.

I don't know the answer Blue, but I'm interested in the responses as I do like a drink socially every now and then. I would be inclined to say its ok but take it slowly

I don't know Hun, I would I imagine like you say Malibu and orange would be your best bet or gun maybe?

Let me know how you get on as I'd be intrigued to know!

I'm interested in the responses too, as before I'm not a big drinker but like one every now and then :) xx

My friend TR was told wait a year after banding before you have alcohol. I'm bypass and I was told 6-12 months.

So I'm retraining myself to go out without alcohol, and enjoy fruit juice or water instead.

I know, not much help, but there we go ;)

I plan to avoid alcohol as much as possible until I achieve my target weight and not drink at all during the first few months.

You're only young once and life is for living but the healthier you are in the early stages the faster the weight will come off and then you can really start living your life to the full. This is just my opinion and you have to what you think is best x

One of two drinks in a week or fortnight isnt going to overload your calorie intake or really kill your weight loss....Surely.

No idea chica. Just keep an eye on that calorie intake as alcohol has a lot of hidden little beasties just waiting to pop out and mess up your calculations.

As I said Kitty...we are talking one or two a week or fortnight....possibly a malibu with a fruit juice....2 sins....if that....its not a heavy calorific drink....its not like beer or things with fizz...

I had my first drink last weekend :) just a glass of Rose wine my op was on 4th jan. I did feel it more lol. My advice would be wait till your pouch is fully healed and the swelling has time to settle with your band. But if you choose to try the Rose was a good choice as their was no fizz in it at all or a nice cocktail. Hope you have a good night out x

Now let me see....

A glass of Red wine is about: 100 Calories
A glass of White wine is about: 100 Calories

And a cuppa tea or coffee with milk and sugar is: depending on the milk....under 50 calories if with sweetner and more if with sugar

So....apart from the fact that its alcohol.....and you wouldnt, well I wouldnt be drinking as much alcohol as a cuppa tea/coffee....then I dont see the problem.

These are the three drinks I've been considering....

Red Wine

Rum kCal Fat(g)

Calories in Bacardi White Rum 20Cl Single 58 0.0
(of course you need to add a mixer ie: juice -so more calories)

Also remember to be careful as you will absorb it quicker and then fall over from the falling over juice and we will laugh... maybe.. ;)

Ah Brilliant...someone whos had a drink!

Have you had a band or bypass or sleeve?

I'm sure my notes say no alcohol until 5 days after surgery, I was going to go out tonight but never.. If I had I'd of been on the cocktails ..

Bear in mind that you will be more likely to eat after alcohol - and it is maybe this habit that causes more issues than the occasional drink.

I've never been the kebab girl after a heavy drinking session lol....Some of my friends have been...but not I...

And I hate being drunk - its not what Im about....thats why Ive never drank much...as i said 6 drinks in a night is a LOT for me....

So eating wont be a bother with me....if drinking alcohol.
