Lets talk Regain...

Lots of those bypassed around the same time as me (six years plus) have regained, some quite significantly.

I was given this brilliant link that does help gain some insight into why it happens and what can be done about it.

In my case I'm in the 6% that got Fistula's but it's worth remembering that if you are regaining it may not be your fault, that you shouldn't try to hide yourself again or feel like you have failed, get checked out and find out why it's happening for you.

Seems in a lot of cases something can be done about it. This video also explains in a more clear way exactly how and why the bypass works and why sometimes they fail. It also touched on another subject Hormones that is not talked about properly pre-bypass but I'll start another thread on that one.

Anyway even if your in your early days or pre-bypass I think this video will be informative.

Thank you so much for posting this. Lots of info in there, especially you watch it all the way through. The Q&A session threw up some stuff I was unaware of re vitamins. I was only allowing an hour between iron and calcium, the nutritionist recommended 2-3 hours. also not to take your calcium all at once.

I am not aware of many of the corrective procedures being available here but still really interesting.

Thanks again :)

This was v interesting Bonita, his presentation was excellent, this really re emphasised to me that I have 18-24 months to not only lose the weight but to ensure I establish good habits both dietary and exercise.

Thanks, I know regain is a bit of a taboo subject but it is something we all need to be wary off and prepare for.

Can I ask have you personally suffered any regain six years on ?

Yes, unfortunately I'm in the 6% that got Fistula's so have regained quite a lot. I was 26st originally, got down to 8st then regained to 21st. Fistulas are being repaired next month so I should lose again after that.

He's very good isn't he? I particularly liked the way he emphasised that people shouldn't be made to feel they have failed if it doesn't work properly. Wish he was over here, I'd have him doing my revision like a shot.

So is your Fistula being repaired endoscopically or are you back under the Knife ? Either way lots of luck.

When I watched it I did think that it was probably a bit new for the NHS, or are you a paying customer.

So is there any sypmtoms to suggest you might have fistulas? Or was it detected by acident looking for something else?

My fistula is being repaired via open surgery (its all a bit complicated but other stuff to be sorted at the same time). With regards to symptoms I did have dreadful stomach pain last year which radiated up into my neck, at the time I had lots of tests because they thought it had to be heart related which obviously showed nothing.

The pain settled down and then my appetite went through the roof, weight just piled back on. Had an emergency Gall op which was risky so the surgeon that did that decided she was going to get to the bottom of what's going on. Lots of tests later they find these fistula's so now I effectively have two fully functioning stomachs and an appetite to match..lol

Here in the UK some surgeons will repair fistula's via Endoscopy but most seem to prefer the open method. My surgeon has been practising for over 13 years and mine is the first she has seen.

Being done on the NHS.
