Accomplia, thank God it's gone!

Hi dave yeah you do need 50 posts to pm so get posting ;)
Good idea to chat to Gp about coming off it if its causing these thoughts. how much weight do you want to lose? have you thought about looking into the vlcd's?

hi

was given acomplia the week before it was recalled. I have to say that i didnt have any side effects though i did lose 3lb in 4 days, I probably wasnt on it long enough to get the effect of it i guess .. now im on Reductil....supposed to have the same effect,eg mind control so to speak..will see how it goes

good luck with reductil. It works well for some people. Sadly I wasn't one of them.

I didn't get on with it as you will see from my post. My main concern was it put my blood pressure up. I also suffered sleepless nights. It came on over the weeks.

If you google reductil forum you will find another useful web site that specializes in the medication.

Good luck on your weight loss journey.

thanks

I went for my blood works and bp weight and height done last month and i had high bp then., when i went to my GP last time she did my BP and it had returned to normal, was prob due to shouting at the kids lol. but she has told me i have to go every 2 weeks to get my BP checked whilst on the Reductil that was why she initally prescribed Acomplia. So we shall see how it goes, Im still adamant that i want to get referred just incase and she hasnt said no, which is a good thing.

I elfie missed you on the boards lately. I too was given reductil some time ago and then taken off it as I have high BP. The last time I was put on it the GP said that it was fine as long as your BP was under control with meds and I had to go once a month to her ended up going for a long time but unfortnately the drug did not work for me. I wished it had. I also had the very dry mouth and not being able to sleep at night but they are much better side affects then feeling suicidal. Good luck chick and keep in touch....xx

Hiya Linda,

Ill email you later today :) Congrats btw !!!

My GP is wanting me to get my BP checked every 2 weeks so shes obviously concerned about it

spoke to my gp yesterday and my councilor about wether i still could be suffering from the side effects of accomplia even though i stopped taking it some time ago. the councilor wasnt aware it had these side eefects and the doctor said she diddnt have a clue but will try and find out.
she didd say it would help that i am haveing counciling for depression to get wls, strange as i already have funding never mind.
dave
ps if anyone who has been on accomplia has suffered continuing side effects please post it would be much appriecated

Hi Scorpian.
I was taken off Accomplia end of July and I STILL suffer from depressive and suicidal thoughts! Don't know if it is the remnants of the tablets or just that I am so fed up with lugging around this hefty body. I am just longing for my appointment with the hospital now..........

hi spikejaycee
glad to hear from you, hopefully more people will come forward, sort of confirming that were not nutters, but the tablets cause lasting problems.

dave

Course your not nutters Dave, medication can do the most awful things to people and no two people are the same. I have missed one of my three Blood pressure meds today as I forgot to order my script I feel like I have been stamped on by a herd of elephants just for one day!.....never doubt your sanity hun its all we have to keep us going...xx

Accomplia

Hello,
I read your posts with interest.
I was attending a diet clinic for some weight loss. Once a month I would go and have my blood pressure taken and get weighed. I was feeling good, eating sensible food and very very slowly was loosing weight.

I didnt drink any alcohol or take any mood affecting drugs. I was checked for at least 6 months and the dietician suggested i go on Accomplia... She told me it was an appetite suppressant and explained that it stopped you feeling hungry between meals etc.

Well it was obvious I wasnt shifting the weight quick enough naturally so I thought... These guys know what they are about so Ill give it a go.

I would like to point out that my medical file was sooo thin.. (unlike me). I had hardly been to the doctors in my life...

I was put on Accomplia in the April of that year... and almost immediately I started feeling low.

I did lose weight and I was on accomplia for just two months. However I was now depressed and acting really weird. I was afraid to go out of my home. I was mistrusting people and generally not able to hold it together. My marraige was a bit rocky but now it was going over the edge.

In the June I had a plan to end my life. Feelings like I have never had before and i couldnt understand what was wrong. I tried to think of everything but it never crossed my mind that this diet drug might be causing it. I was looking fantastic so i certainly wasnt depressed over my weight.

Anyway I seriously contemplated suicide to the point that I went out and got alcohol to assist with what I was about to contemplate. I hadnt drank a beer in 18 years, mainly because I hated the taste of it...

I called my friend who helped me by taking me away to his house for a week and we could not understand what was going on. I went and seen my doctor who put me on antidepresssants and it went all downhill from their.

They gave me stronger and stronger drugs antil I actually couldnt function.
Thats bad news if you are self emplyed like me and my business was seriously damaged. mainly because I couldnt gather in money to pay wages or make sales...

It was terrible but luckily i had good friends who helped me.

Since then I had a couple of similar incidents where i had serious thoughts of self harm.

My wife and I divorced as she said I was incapable of fixing the damage that was done.

I looked hard at my life and wondered what had happened, blaming anything I could, life circumstances, getting married young and all sorts of things.

It wasnt until a friend of mine who went to the doctor and asked for Accomplia and was told it was withdrawn did I make the connection...

I believe that this drug has wrecked my life. Within two months of taking it and I was only on it for two months I was suicidal, and extremely depressed.

I have instructed a legal team who deals with these type of cases to look further at mine with a view to taking this further.

If you want to email me if you have a similar story or would like to know how I am getting on please do so..

Many thanks

Big Man

Great news that the drug has been withdrawn was a bad experience for people who were already battling demons without adding to them

Accomplian (Rimonabant) was taken off the market and good job too.

What really annoys me is that there is not one medication that is effective. For instance Alli (Xenical) gets rid of fat in food, but because it does so usually with faecal accidents, users stop using it.

Fat intake has to be reduced, but if someone can do that, they are likely cutting down on calories to some extent.

Appetite supressents can cause side effects with blood pressure problems etc. All drugs can have side-effects.

The one item that I personally think is brilliant is Appesat which can be bought over the counter at Boots, Superdrug, and from their website, and it really does control the appetite and is natural, but you should speak to a professional first as it can't be taken with some medications.

When I had it it really controlled the appetite, but I have now been put on diabetic tablets which seem to also control the appetite so I don't take Appesat anymore.

It is not always appetite though that keeps people at a high weight, and it goes deeper than that, with bad habits to certain foods, and addiction to foods.

Eating for boredom, anxiety and all other emotions play a part.

I think more people should be given some sort of counselling. I had CBT which helped me think about certain situations when I would turn to food. CBT plays a part, but there is so much more to someone being super-morbidly obese.

I really wish there was more psychological counselling available - because current weight loss meds are rubbish - and if we had more insight and encouragement that would help.

However, having said that, no-one should underestimate the power of support on websites such as minimins and others, as there is a tremendous amount of support and encouragement on them.

Hi Bigman
Welcome to minis, what a tragic story all because of prescribed medication thank goodness it's now off the market. Lady in London i agree with you ,i have not been offered any counselling maybe cause i went privately

there are days i'm finding it difficult emotionally and if it wasn't for the lovely people on here i would be lost x

The counselling I had was at my request - I haven't even mentioned to my GP I am interested in WLS yet. It is an option if calorie counting fails. I wanted to see what Cognitive Behaviour Therapy was about in relation to eating habits and asked my GP, and it only took five weeks from referral to a session of ten 50 minutes sessions with a NHS therapist. It makes you think before you act. You think certain food eating is habit or addiction, but there is a way to curb that cycle. It works sometimes, and sometimes it doesn't.

If you have private surgery, are you assessed psychologically as NHS patients are, or is it a case of pay your money, and have your op, with no back-up if a patient has a psychiatric background etc.

I'm so sorry that you suffered in this way Bigman. To have a drug that causes psychiactric problems is awful and must have been very frightening to you to have a dramatic change in the way you deal with life and (temporarily)to your personality and outlook on life.

I have not been on Accomplia. I am so glad it has been withdrawn if it has affected people in this way. Sometimes feel that we are human guinea pigs.

Best wishes to you

Hi Lady in London
Basically that's almost exactly how it went, took a brief medical history from myself did'nt require a doc's referral not that, that would have been a prob. I was well prepared for it and completely honest so it was fine for me but maybe not for some others x

Did these really work and help you lose weight? I still have a couple of months to go before my operation and I am putting weight on making it difficult to get around. I'd like to go back on Reductil short-term but as it increased my BP (Now controlled my medication) its unlikely the doctor will prescrobe it again. Would Appesat affect my BP medication?
