Advice before surgery !!

Hi and welcome to minis:D
I am 12 days post op from a bypass and on the whole feel fab;)

Well I am feeling a lot more at ease with everyone's comments. It is good to hear that Mr Ammouri is a great surgeon. It is also good to feel that others have had similar concerns and they have survived !! What are peoples feelings re the bypass removing some of the emotional ties with food, as I've been told that as the Grehlin in the stomach is no longer stimulated, you end up with less brain demand for food, is this the case?

I thought you might find this interesting and will answer your question.

Very interesting and it says a lot about bariatric surgery and obesity.

(((hugs)))

You will find that your appetite is suppressed initially, but in most cases your hunger does return over time, i find i get hungry and have to eat when your pouch is empty it really is empty

hi, and welcome, can't help you i'm afraid, i'm still waiting for my opp. i keep reading posts on all sorts of problems and it's helped me understand a lot more than i thought of in the first place.
i'm sure you will feel the same in time.

Not for me it didn't :D I feel hungry every single day, only difference is I feel it in my head not my gut. I crave all the foods I used to eat, but I now have the tools I need to resist. I believe it will get better with time.

Mr Ammouri did my op in February and he did a great job. He is a fantastic surgeon. If Kath Rothwell is your nurse you will have the dream team in your corner. I love Kath and miss her greatly now the MRI have lost the contract.

Dumping has never troubled me, mainly because I avoid the foods that are sugary like the plague.

Good luck with your procedure mate

Thanks Karlos. It is good to get a balanced reply as first thoughts about the bypass was it would be an easy way out.......I think that tools to do the job is a good approach. Cheers Paul

Hi there and welcome. I went through Healthier weight, saw Dr Ashton and had Dr Ammori. They whole process has beenutterly brilliant as far as they are concerned and Ammori was a really gentle, caring surgeon. There are many posts about him on this forum and I've not ready a sinlge bad comment! Healthier weight have alsocalled me every week post op and really cared for me in hospital. Dr Ashton has so much knowledge and experience I went with what he had to say and followed his adivce, (I nearly went for sleeve but ended up with bypass) I am 6 weeks post op and DUMP ALL THE TIME! It's a god dam nightmare and makes me feel really really sick, faint and lasts an hour. I can even dump on low fat rice pudding, low sugar jelly, low fat custard, a cup of tea with a teaspoon of sugar. Some people on here are really lucky and hardly dump at all but even though I am dreading the next episode, I do not have any regrets about what I have had done. However bad it is, it doesn't change the fact I am utterly delighted I am approaching 3 stone weight loss in 8 weeks (incl pre op diet). I would recommend the healthier weight shakes and soups they give you on the pre op diet for afterwards as well. This was the only thing I could have in the weeks post op that I didn't dump on. I am going to continue using them until the whole dumping things settles down. Good Luck and let us know how you get on!

Hi CamperLou, many thanks for the post. It is reasuring to hear that the healthier weight team are a good choice. The dumping is a worry but I guess balanced against that sort of weight loss I would feel the same as you. How have you found your appetite since the surgery?
Thanks again, Paul

Paul it is wise to think of this operation as being given the tools to help you cope. Never think its the easy way out because its far from it, you still have to work at it.

As for the dumping, that too is a tool for some of us. I'm nine weeks post op and dumping like hell a lot of the time, even 1/2 a banana can get me going, so I have to avoid anything sweet like the plague which can only be a good thing in the long run.

hello and welcome to minimins .....

im a post op 3 months bypasser and i dont get dumping or have dumped .. and i eat more or less everything i use to apart from bread pastry fizz .. and sweets ..

i have all the meats and veg and fruit rice pasta etc ... and i have been fine i even have normal ice lollys and ice cream and im fine ..

so good luck

I haven't dumped either. I'm coming up for 11 weeks post op. I have deliberately avoided sugar and bread. I've tried a little rice but not pasta. Fruit has no effect on me and I sometimes make smoothies with banana and strawberries.

It's important to listen to your body. If you feel a bit sick or it feels like a lump in your throat give it a miss for a while then try again.

Go gently though. It takes longer for the inside to heal, so even though the external wound is dry with no scab the inside will still be sensitive. x x x
