BMI and Gastric Bypass

hi just be honest and tell him how much ur weight is affecting u and how much u want the surgery keep us posted and good luck xxx

Thank you all for replying, I have booked an appointment for Thursday at 4.50pm my lovely doctor has left the practise last week so am booked in with a new one, I did ask for the one that was easiest to speak to so we will have to see how it goes. The Xenical has no effect on my at all, I was hoping if I ate something I shouldn't (high fat!!) I would suffer the consequences and this would defer me but no such luck. Here's to Thursday although I don't hold out much hope I can only try. Take care.

Tracey

Tracey...don`t go in there not holding out much hope....you go in there with the fame of mind your coming out with nothing less than a referral.

Be honest with him & determined...let him know that you have researched it & know the implications of both having/ not having surgery. Alot of GP`s don`t really know alot of detail about wls so if you can get that referral you`ll be able to discuss it with a specialist who does

good look on thurs...we`re all rooting for ya :)

Thank you for your replies Claire and Mandy. I will be honest (think I need to make a list before I go, it's all going round my head at the moment but I tend to panic and forget when I get there!) Wow Claire your surgery is next week you must be so excited do you mind me asking how much it is going to cost and who you are having it done with? I wish you well on your exciting journey and I will be following your updates.

Yup Claire's right, you need to be positive about the appointment!

I hated xenical, I have IBS and it was terrible for me. I couldn't have the other one, Reductil, because I have medical depression and its contra-indicated.

My GP had a referral flow chart which he used for me, he didn't have a clue what he was meant to do!

according to the bospa.org website you authority use the following guidelines. BOSPA - The British Obesity Surgery Patient Association
Bedfordshire BMI over 40 with type 2 diabetes and/or severe sleep apnoea (hypertension is not an allowable comorbidity for surgery), are aged 18-60 and who have been receiving intensive obesity management of at least 6 months.
Just go along and tell him as it is for you. All you can do is try.

Tracey a list is a MUST then you have all your thoughts & questions in black & white in case you get flustered

My surgery cost 10k & i`m having it done by Mr Ammori at the spire in manchester

Claire, did you have a problem persuading them to do it private as your BMI doesn't look over 40! Would they not do it nhs for you? Sorry for so many questions.

Can anyone list the steps I need to go through. I know, see doctor - what happens next?

1. See doctor
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.
9.
10. Operation (private or NHS)

Thanks for you help just wanted to know about the long road ahead.

ok thats going to depend on your PCT - but here's mine

1> see doctor
2> try orlistat (xenical) for 6 months and reductil for 6 months (nurse supervised)
3> attend lifestyle and weight management classes for minimum 3 months
4> see bariatric co-ordinator for minimum 3 months
5> undergo psychological assessment
6> bariatric co-ordinator puts your case to panel for funding
7> funding is approved
8> referral to private hospital (outsourced by PCT)
9> see bariatric consultant/surgeon
10> get date for surgery
11> see bariatric nurse and dietician 2 weeks prior to surgery
12> do pre-op diet for 2 weeks to shrink liver
13> see bariatric nurse 5 days prior to surgery
14> have surgery

Mine's quite long winded lol.

it took 18 months lol. And I missed stage 2 as I had already been on the pills before. BUT that is just my experience, yours will probably be completely different, it depends on your PCT and what procedures they have in place! When are you seeing the GP?

Hi Shell, have got an appointment to see GP on Thursday at 4.50pm my lovely doctor has left the practise so I haven't met this one before. My fixed rate mortgage is up for renewal and mortgage adviser is coming next Tuesday night think I might see how much it will cost to put £10,000 on the mortgage and go private :sigh:

Only you can decide if it's worth it! I had made the decision before christmas that if PCT said no I was going to go private. Have you checked with some of the private surgeons what their minimums are?

Hi Tracey,
I am having a band done privately, so my experience is a little different (and decidedly simpler) than Shell's. For me it has gone like this...
1) Speak to Spire hospital to find out process I need to undertake.
2) See GP and ask for a referral letter to surgeon.
3) Speak to surgeon's secretary and sort out first available appointment to see surgeon (had to wait about a month for my appointment).
4) See surgeon- operation options and risks discussed- left to me to decide if to go for band or bypass -op booked for 4 weeks later.
5) See bariatric nurse specialist for a discussion about lifestyle change and a chance to have all sorts of questions answered.
6) Start pre-op diet - 29th June
7) Pre-op assessment clinic (takes place July 10th)
8)Into hosp morning of July 14th, op that pm and home on 15th.
From ringing Spire re - initial enquiry to op in less than 2 months......easy but pricey!!
Hope this helps x

Thanks Alliecat, it's good to be able to see both options, must say private looks easier option, even though more expensive and I want this done yesterday!!! Will see what happens on Thursdays thank you for all your replies they have been very informative.
