Considering gastric band but scared

Hi corgi...just wondering how ur getting on? Have u made any decisions?
Hi ya I am seeing Mr Kennedy again this Wednesday. Have decided to have Band just need to see when he can do it. If it is close to Christmas I will leave it to New Year. How u getting on

Glad youve come to a decision, im a scaredy cat other options weren't an option for me! I meet dr kirk on Monday and like you see when they can do it. Its on my mimd 24/7 so might aswell be in my belly!

What package are u going for? Im a bit stuck between the two "cheaper" 1s atm the complication treatment cover is swaying me to the dearer of the 2 but my bank balance is crying at the thought!

Hi I have had gastric band for 10years you are told it's for life but it's not!! After the first year my bad slipped causing blockage to my stomach I has to have 3 surgical operations and was in ITU for 10days they repositioned the band although I wanted it out! 9 years down the line I started getting really bad reflux and chest pain went for a barium swollow X-ray and was told the band has corroded into my stomach and damaged my osophagus which is why I have the bad reflux and band needs to be remover ASAP I am going in this week to have it removed and to see what damage it has caused my surgeon said I may have to have further surgery on my osophagus and stomach and me on medication for the rest of my life so please research the band and have it checked regularly as I paid private for mine and only got 12 months free after care but it needs to be checked yearly!!

I found this on you tube it's very informative please watch if you are considering the gastric band!!

In nearly half of the patients, the bands had been removed because of medical complications. Mini-Gastric Bypass Flipping Monkey "No Band 4 ...

Please research when choosing gastric band they say it's for life but I had a gastric band 10 years ago after the first year it slipped causing blockage in my stomach I had to have 3 operations within 36 hours and spent 10 days in ITU I wanted them to remove the band but they just put another one in! I paid private for the band it cost £10000 when I had it done and that was only with 1 year of after care! I had 6mls put in my band in 2005 and didn't have another fill as I was to scared it would slip again I still had some restriction couldn't eat first thing in the morning and struggled with certain foods and then 3 weeks a go I woke up and had trouble swallowing my own saliva it was really strange I left it several days put it down to stress as that effects the band (for me) but after 5 days I phoned the place where I had it done they said you need to have a barium swallow x ray done ASAP we can get you in cost of £350 I said I don't have that sort of money so they said well we can't help you then!! I thought you could when I paid £10000 to have it done. Anyway I went to my doctor and lucky he listened and referred me for the barium X-ray on NHS and I had it a couple of days later and was told the band has eroded into my stomach and damaged my osophagus causing lots of damage and that is why I had very bad reflux that was very painful! I went to see a bariatric surgeon and he said it needs to come out ASAP and I may need further surgery to repair the damage it has caused and will require medication for the rest of my life! The only problem being he was the only surgeon where I live that specialises in the operation and he was going on holiday for 10 days but he said he will send me to have the bad deflated which should help with the pain. I went to have it deflated and felt wonderful I could take a deep breath the first time in 10 years and could enjoy a cup of tea but 2 hours later I had chest pain burning sensation in my gums and vomiting an ambulance was called and I was taken into A&E lots of tests done and deflation of the band had caused more slippage was out on a ward and given morphine and all sorts of pain relief but surgeon still on Holliday I stayed in for 5 days then came home cause I missed my girls (3yr and 1yr old bless them) sent home with strict instructions not to drive and take it easy!! Not with my girls lol. Anyway I done as I am told but the pain is horrid surgeon come back yesterday waiting on a phone call today to see when I am going in to have it removed can't wait!!! So please research the band before you decide to have it I was mis sold it really as I have a sweet tooth and you can still eat chocolate and things that melt its more for someone with a savoury tooth in my opinion. Personally it was the worst decision I ever made!! But that is only my opinion. Good luck with what ever you decide this is just my story.

Take care

Good luck for Monday. Let me know how you get on. Decision day tomorrow evening for me. Will keep you posted

Personally I dont have the balls for another type pf surgery I think ppl are so brave who get more invasive surgery..that might sound naive but I suffer v much from anxiety and I think a band is enough to handle xxx

I understand fully I felt like you when I first started as I felt it was safer in a way
But after having both I find the bypass was more suited to me as the band gave me to many problems
But I did like the band

No major problems at the start it's all the messing with the fills and then stress seemed to affect it made it hard or swell and all went wrong after a year when they over filled it and it slipped I then had it emptied and left for about six weeks then slowly filled again but after 2nd one slipped again and he went in to reposition it but could not so removed it then I had to wait a year then I had a by pass and not had any real problems and lost weight well with it and can eat a lot different foods than I could with a band
But that's only my story I know others who have had very good results with a band and others who have had nightmares so every one is different go with what you are happiest with but talk it over with your surgeon
They will advise the best
Good luck and what ever you choose this site is here with fantastic people who can advise
Take care

Lots of good advice on here. Quick update. I was to meet my Surgeon on Wednesday but I postponed as I was unsure if I was making right choice having read loads on wls site. Need to consider what is best for me band or bypass. Thought I had made my decision but after reading a few posts it made me quite anxious. Is this normal?

It's a big decision, and it's an important one, give yourself time to come to a conclusion. I thought about it for a LONG time before I was ready, but I went into it knowing absolutely I had made the best choice for me, and that knowledge has kept me going when it's all seemed a lot of hassle and I'd rather be eating cake!

Good luck x

Thanks Sarah for your wise words. Did you have a band or bypass

I had a band. It's not for everyone, but it was the best option for me and it's been overwhelmingly positive so far:)

I was anxious as well, and read a lot of horror stories about bands failing which scared me.

However I still felt it was the best option for me, as I didn't want anything more invasive.

If you make the right food choices and follow all the rules, you give it the best chance of working for you.

I think quite a few cases of band failure are due to them being misused.

I am certain that the girl on that stupid TV documentary about bands going wrong had misused hers.
