Can anybody tell me the critirea you have to be for walsall manor hospital only been on NICE webpage and BOSPA and cannot find the match for it? Thanx, sarah.

Hi Sarah. The criteria isn't set by Walsall Hospital, it is set by your local Primary Care Trust (PCT). Whereabouts do you live, then you will be able to see if anyone else is under the same PCT who can give you some info. I am under NHS North Staffordshire whose criteria is BMI over 50. However, I have had my first appt with Walsall (my BMI varies between 45 and 47) and the surgeon and head doctor both said I would qualify because I have comorbidities, and their guidance said that my PCT funds for BMI over 40 with comorbidities.

First step - find out what PCT you're under.

I would add that BOSPA website isn't that accurate in terms of the criteria it lists for each PCT - it certainly isn't for NHS North Staffs anyway. The best thing is to speak directly to your own PCT (Commissioning Team) unless your GP is au fait with the bariatric surgery criteria.

Your GP will have a PCT questionnaire that he/she will complete in order to check if you meet the relevant PCT criteria.

:)Thanx,i live in the pelsall area just about ten minutes from walsall, and im hoping that it will be ok i have had a referall for monday to go and see them and they already know my bmi im just worried that when i get there they will say no!!:(

I have to say my GP referred me without knowing the criteria, he just went by what I told him - which was BOSPA's out of date info!! I went to see the hospital 8 weeks ago and am now waiting for the next step - I did speak to them on Monday to ask whether they knew if there were any problems with funding and if so, was there anything I could do, but they advised that to their knowledge everything was fine. Just waiting now!!

Sarahhj - I'm at Walsall Manor.

seen and did post a message about my process so far, but it has disappeared in the ether (net!!!!). If it doesn't come up soon I'll repost!

I have to say Tesmerelda that Mr Khan and Dr Hartland both said that they believed I was okay for funding due to my BMI being over 40 and having comorbidities. They also said if funding was refused, they would appeal on my behalf in the first instance. I'm not worrying about it, I'm just trying to be patient (before being a patient!!). I'm not sure but I don't think my local PCT has had many applications for funding and I haven't found one other person under the same PCT!

I think, by the looks of things sarah, the criteria is that you have to be a Looney Tune and a bit of a nutter chucks! lol
