hi all!!! i came across this site while searching for info on what to eat after gastric bypass, i was only passing by but you all seemed lovely and after reading half of zoe's diary i decided to join!!
im 3 weeks post op and to be honest its like having an alien inside me instead of a tummy lol... were just getting to know each other... im finding out what foods it will let me eat without dire consequences... for example i know boiled eggs are the aliens sleeping pill lol... 15mins after i ate one i fell asleep for two hours!!!
im lucky tho the alien seems quite friendly i havent had dumping or been sick but its early days yet lol... ive lost 3 stone since starting the journey with the liver shrinking diet on the 13th jan, had my op 1st of feb. did my hard slog of liquids only for the first two weeks then on to baby food pastes, im supposed to be on stiff purees now but ive eaten chicken rice pasta tuna etc... im a little worried that im doing my alien harm but i think id go crazy trying to force more purees down!!! i do have a constant mild ache on my left side im a little worried about, wonder if thats cos ive left purees too soon... i really wasnt given nutritional advice for this period just to make sure i got enough liquids so now i feel a bit up in the air!!! so any help advice or encouragement will be gratefully received!!! i feel like im really low on energy everything is a chore!!! will this improve?? ooh and ive cheated a little i ate sum ice cream and a low fat digestive!!! my alien seemed to enjoy that but i feel really guilty!!! even though i cant eat enough yet to go over my allotted calories!!!
also to anyone thinking of doing this.... i dont regret a single second!!! i would do it again!! i want to eat to live not live to eat as i was b4, even 3 stone has made me so much more comfortable!! anything anyone wants to ask about the op im ready and willing to chat!!!
thanks for listening.....(or reading should i say lol)

Hi again. I think its great you've found this site cos I need someone to share bypass info with. Hopefully have my op in July. I am having doubts but I know deep down it's my only option. I think its hilarious you call your new stomach alien, almost like a little pet name. :D

3st off is fab, well done and it's great you're on solids already. What's your scar like? Did you have keyhole or normal surgery?

hi lynn
thanks so much for replying!!! i was starting to feel like billy no mates!! ha!! it def feels like a bit of an alien lol... its def not my old tummy that could and would accept as much of anything i fancied. your making a brave decision it is a big step but if you've been on every diet and cant shift the weight and your unhappy its the right decision. my surgeon told me that when u get to a certain weight ur body becomes a fat making machine and it becomes really hard to lose more than 2 stone. he also said 80% of ppl that lose massive amounts of weight on diets put it back on. whereas the gastric bypass makes it much more difficult to put weight back on.
i had the keyhole surgery, im a big woos lol, dont do pain etc... so when it was time to take my dressings off i was a bit scared.... after id done it i laughed at myself!!! i had 5 wounds, 4 of them looked like my cat had scratched me! one was a little larger but all in all they were small and painless!!
lynn anything you want to ask please do... ill be ur pal through it!!!! hope to hear from u soon!!

Hey Donna, I just wanted say welcome to Minimins :wavey: and good luck getting on with your 'alien'

Hi again. I'd like keyhole but don't think my doc offers it, must ask. There is only one doctor in N. Ireland who does WLS so I am limited unfortunately. I only found out about him about a month ago, never knew there was any surgeons here. Was gonna travel to sussex but I think it's better I have the op at home.

In a couple weeks time I will hopefully be seeing mr K again to sign consent forms and get a date for the op, eek! :D

I'm not having WLS (well, not yet anyway) but i thought I'd just ay Hi and welcome :)

thanks dk from me and the alien... think im gonna call him glug cos thats the noise it makes lol... love ur pic... an egyptian penguin lol right up my street....

hi again lyn,
so ur in ni? have you researched ur surgeon? makes u feel better when u do but if he's the only one i bet he's had loads of experience, different surgeons do it differently, even if its open surgery itl only mean one extra day in hospital, the way i see it its a few weeks of pain for a lifetime of better health and having more than one shop to buy clothes in lol... itl be worth it, a new lease of life. my bmi was 46 when i went in (im 5'9) its just over 39 now....
i know im prob being blonde but how did u get that pic up? and how did u add the little weight chart at the bottom??? :D

thank you for ur welcome russian doll, hey i feel all loved and cared for now... the alien feels all warm and fuzzy lol.....

He learned the WLS out in austrailia, he specialises in the stomach area. I googled his name and he seems well respected and knowledgable. He's done about 45 ops which seems a bit low numbered. *shrug* He'd have more experience maybe if it was still available in NI on the nhs. A lot of people who need it may not be able to afford to pay privately. Apparently the nhs only withdrew funding 6 months ago, must quiz him on that, cause he then started on about something else.

I really want to lose as much as I can in the next 4-5 months so risks are minimised.

Forgot to say that you can choose an avatar (the pic under your user name) when you have made about 50 posts and then edit you signature after 100 I think. :)

ahhh thanks for that lynn.... ill just keep posting then...
glad u googled him 45 is a good amount im sure you'll be fine with him, makes you wonder why the only wls in ni stopped doing nhs, seems crazy, especially as we are becoming more like america more obesity related illnesses. my surgeon said the number of ppl requesting this op has gone up dramatically in the last few years. there were 5 of us in hospital together all in the same ward havin the same op. i thought that was a great idea as we all supported each other and keep in touch now. while we were there he bought a group of big wigs up to meet us cos he wants his team/hospital to be the flagship for barriatric surgery in the uk. hope he does it cos he's fab, hes been on some of the bypass surgery tv progs.
ive realised i only get that pain in my tummy wen i eat more solid foods so im going back to sloppy stuff for another week, they tell you to do these things for a reason.
has your surgeon told u he wants u to diet? cos my bmi was under 50 i only had to do the liver shrinker for 3 weeks but some of the other girls had to do it for longer....
how are u feeling about it?? im a firm believer in positive thought changing the universe.... look at it as the beginning of a new life for you and itl be fine...

Hiya. I know it's pure stupid but the nhs in NI is under more pressure than ever. I still need to find out about a loan. The dr didn't mention having to do pre-op diet but I presume I'll have to. I am not doing very well diet-wise. I be good for 2 or 3 days then I mess up.

I like your attitude re positive thinking. I am still a bit freaked about the bypass but I don't want to get the band, not lose weight and then hate myself for making the wrong decision.

In saying that I have read that not only can you cheat the band but the bypass too. Maybe I could learn to live with the band. Aw jeez I thought it was all sorted in my mind. lol.

it is easier to cheat with the band thats why my surgeon didnt think it would help me so i didnt opt for it, as for the bypass im talking from experience it is def very hard to cheat on the bypass. firstly pure sugar or fatty stuff makes u feel sick, so u learn to avoid them, secondly ur stomach is too small to allow u to pig out... u eat too much u vomit, so u physically cant binge, had sum of my pals special fried rice from the chinese managed 4 teaspoons of it b4 i was full and it was my fav.... but it just didnt taste the same. thirdly because of the new way your stomach digests food and absorbs calories you dont get the full amount of calories from food as a normal stomach would. like if u ate a cheeseburger now and so did i u might absorb 200 calories and i would only absorb only 100, thats why you have to take vitamins for the rest of your life after bypass. you can eat fattening stuff but you cant eat enough of it to maintain the weight you are now, its impossible!!!! only when you reach a much much lower weight if u keep eating fatty stuff u can put some weight back on but never all of it. the two years it takes to get to goal are supposed to teach you how to eat better, teaches you that food is just fuel and not to make u feel better or a treat or an anti depressant, just fuel.... its not easy but it really does work.

Well hello you 2 i have been reading your posts and i was so where you are both i had my gastris bypass 31st may 07 and it went very well i was 26 11 and i had it done key hole i am now 17 12 as of this morning and 7 or so pound of that is water at the min so that should drop off lol i can remember the start of this new life of mine with the liquids and all and i have to say! go at what pace suites u! i did not stay on that for long as i am naughty lol but you must chew that food or you will pay if i over eat i get the most horrid pain in my chest but thats my own fault and you dont eat for a while after that lol and as for the sugar thing i keep well away as i dump on so many foods even without sugar but at the end of the day it has saved my life!!!! i am so not complaining i would do it again in the morning if you want to know anything just ask it so nice to find people who have had the same done and its different for everyone anyway sorry if the spelling is bad lol would love to get to know you both talk soon i hope x x

Hi Debs. Yay we have another person. It's great to get other's experience too. We should form a little gang. The WLS Chicks or something. :D Omg, have you lost around 9st in 9 months?? Thats so excellent! I'm going to ring my dr Fri and get the ball rolling.

I suppose the way I have reacted is natural. It'd be pretty normal to get scared. I have read some of Kandy's diary. She had surgery in Oct last year, very interesting.

Jeez, I can't wait to be on the road to Slim City, hopefully via Self Acceptance town and More Confidence Road lol.

hi deb, gr8 to hear another success story and to be honest the fact u cheat a bit too and have still lost all that weight is fab!!! i have stayed the same weight for about a week and im wondering if its gonna drop again soon.... did u have times where your weight stayed the same for a while???
lyn ur sooo right we should form a bypass group and i loved the positive comments at the end of ur post!!! u go girl!!!!!

Lets talk more about the positive thinking. Has anyone a mantra or something they repeat every day? If we can end up believing the negatives if we are told often enough then surely the reverse is true?

More often if I'm panicky outside I repeat to myself 'you're as good as anyone else' I think it gives me something to focus on.

you two are so great x x and the positive way you have is truly fab!! as to some of the ?? i can stick on a weight for a mth or more it drives me mad! and you can gain weight easy sometimes you cannot find a reason it just happens i suppose we just have to go with the flow!!! lol big hugs to you guys catch you on the lighter side x

helloooooooo

I am due tosee my consultant for the first meeting on 2nd april...so fingers crossed,,,hoping for nhs too. which would be fantastic x

lyn ive learned that being positive and happy and trying to see good in everything brings more positivity and happiness into your life, negativity should be banished as all it brings is more of the same and just makes u unhappy....only you can change ur mood cos it comes from inside, wen u feel down count your blessings see the good and beauty in everything around you, visualise what you want for your future and believe it!!! a good dvd i watched was called the secret its all about thinking positively, u can watch the first 20 mins free on you tube, just type in the secret....
its a wonderful life and we should grab happiness with two hands....

vicky all will be fine!!! see that first appointment as the first step of a new adventure starring a new slimmer you!!!! it WILL happen... i wish u lots of luck, tell me how you get on!!!

im going to my first post op appointment with my surgeon tomorrow and im gonna kiss him cos i just got into a pair of jeans i havent been able to wear for two years!!! and it feels gr8!!! (im a hoarder lol.. i have half a wardrobe of clothes that are fine but havent fit for ages!!!) i lost another 2lbs im moving again!!!! life with the alien is looking good.... :)
