Has a bander ever gained weight?

Girlfriend! Nooooooooooooo! Stop the negativity now! You are setting yourself up to give up before you start.

You have now embarked on a positive journey. As you will have read on this forum, banders/bypassers/ballooners have said there will be hard times and possibly set backs, but this is a positive chance for you. Grab it and move forwards.

No one takes the WLS path lightly. Please don't allow negativity to sabotage that path before you start. :vibes: Think positive!!

If its any consolation I worry that I will either not lose much weight or gain it back. It is not at the forefront of my mind but I suppose years of being overweight and trying diets that never work I am yet to be convinced that this will....I gather old habits die hard. I remember the diets sticking to them to the letter and then getting weighed only to be dissappointed. I wonder if there is anyone else out there that feels the same. I am not being negative and there is nothing to say that it wont come off its just a thought that crosses my mind...xx

hi
i will speak on my behalf only as i know everyones journey is so different. i was banded 12weeks ago and yes i have gained some weight and then lost again but this is down to the stomache finding its right restriction and ofcourse you can also let things slip i.e cakes, chocs, icecream and biscuits..the banding experience isnt a qick fix by any means but a lifelong changing experience..
i am a very honest person and my band is going great as long as i work with it.
hope that helps

hmm I did sound negative there! I keep thinking there is no way that can happen as I won't be able to stuff food down, then on the other hand I wonder if I will turn into a sweety eating maniac! (although I never have been) Be positive is more than just a blood group I guess!

The simple answer is yes but there are reasons for that.

1. Cheating the band by eating high fat, high sugar foods.
2. Not enough restriction.
3. Complications with the band.

I am basically 6 weeks post op and have now hit my first plateau, I have not lost any weight for 2 weeks but not put back on yet...my first fill is due tomorrow morning, so I am hoping this gives me back some restriction and the weight starts to come off again.

Just remember, there will be tough days or weeks but you have to keep thinking of the big picture, think 12 months away, not tomorrow.

You will do fine, keep positive and don't let the hurdles trip you up, eventually you will leap them...

Hugs to you ((((( )))))

i regained 2 stone in 12 months when my fills stopped working, it can also be regained if you cheat and eat sugary or greasy foods as the band allows these high calory bad foods through. will power is needed with the band to get the best from it.

I am nearly 4 weeks post op. Since I started the preop diet I have lost 30lbs. I havent lost 1lb for the past 2 weeks. But I have continued losing inches each week. I strongly suggest you meassure yourself, upper arms, neck, bust, waist, hips and thighs weekly. It is what has stopped me feeling like I have failed. I know I havent failed as I havent gained, but I know that I am not eating enough to be gaining weight. But phsycologically we torment ourselves by relying on feelings from previous diets that havent worked for us. It must be worked with. I dont eat sweets and haven't craved them so dont worry about wanting things you dont want before the band!

hiya

like em, I can only speak for myself, but I have the band, it was fitted mid July. Overall, I am close (5lbs) away from a 3 stone loss - HOWEVER, i had two bad spells, when I gained weight. I gained two pounds, while waiting for my first fill. Then I gained 4 1/2 pounds why waiting for my third fill. The band is not a quick fix, and sometimes that can be hard to adjust to, we all want the weight off and NOW, but you are told upfront that this is a long process and should look at 18 months to 3 years before you get close to where you want to be. This is one drawback to the band versus the bypass, with the band bad, naughty foods can get by and not cause you any grief. You have to get not only the band right, but also your mind, you have to get in the right mind frame and like Em said again, learn to work with your band. I have my first real councelling session next week to help me get my mind round why I have these weight issues, why I eat when I do ( I am an emotional eater), and how better to address these issues when they arise without resorting to eating a block of chocolate!!! YOU are also told when you go for this surgery, that the band only does 30% of the work, you still have to do the other 70%. As long as you are prepared for this then you will be successfull. I am still learning to chip away at the 70% and hope by getting my mind in a healthy position that that will be another step in the right direction. Think long and hard, you have to be strong and not go in with the impression that this is the end of all your problems, you will still have the ups and downs, and you will still have the plateau's especially if you chose the band option. take care and good luck.

I know someone who had a gastric bypass, lost 10 stone, regained 8 and is still gaining.

As previous posters have said - it's not a magic solution.

No weight loss path is a permanent fix, unless, there is a lifestyle change. WLS is the 'last chance saloon' for those who have not succeeded with maintained weight loss with other methods.

The physical barrier of WLS is an obvious help, but anyone who thinks that WLS alone is enough is fooling themselves.

Without getting our heads around why we do what we do with food, any one of us can slip back and gain. Old habits must die with the scalpel or else food will be our nemesis forever.

I had my band 8 or 9 weeks ago (god im so bad at remembering:D) at first i did well lost 17lbs:D, but over the last 4 weeks i have re gained about 11lbs but i have no restriction and waiting on my first fill(hospital needs to pull finger out:confused:)

I am peeved with it:confused:, but i always knew that the time between op and fill would be no mans land for me, and im hoping to get a fill before Xmas so i dont gain any more lol and 2009 will be my year .

And like others have said the band is a tool i have eaten as i pleased to be honest as i have no restriction and know that when i start fills i will not be able to eat as normal so im just happy not weighing myself for the first time in years and worrying about the food i eat, as i know that it starts for me with my first fill. And then i WILL lose 5 stone

Honey, can't you get your band fill done sooner, by going private rather than waiting for the hospital to give you a date? It is not too expensive, not cheap either, but to keep you motivated and losing the weight, surely paying out would be worth it rather than waiting?

Why have they taken so long - mine was six weeks from op. You need to badger them....

because it has !! no other reason :),just that im waiting and there is no badgering i can do to make it any quicker i just have to wait ,unfortunately although funding in place and my gp sorted it with hosp ,hosp now being funny:confused:(although dont see why as funding has been sorted ?so they just like my gp says need to give me an apt )

and im not haveing a fill private unless i know for certain what my outcome will be with the hosp. as i want it to be started and carry on with them not go somewhere else and then back .far to much for me to cope with lol
