Has anyone else been advised not to take fastabs?

I've been the same with the iron, on it and off it according to my blood levels. Bloods should be checked every few months for the first year then once or twice a year after that.

Its awful that hospitals are sending patients home without meds, legally they have to give you 7 days supply on discharge and a letter for your gp detailing ongoing requirements.

Mr Ammori was on the ball Shell. I had liquid or dissolve on the tongue tablets to bring home in the main, to tide me over until my repeat prescription was drawn up by my GP and Mr Ammori wasted no time in sending my GP a letter with a list of everything listed below and by the second week... I had all of my post op recommendations even delivered by the chemist...

It's a good job we are liaising on here, or a lot of our fellow wls candidates may well be missing out on vital nutrients.

Dawn , Ive got the number somewhere.....Ill try and find it and give them a ring and let you know what they say :D XX

Hi all, well i rang the specialist nurse and she said they dont precribe any of the medication you are all on in my area.
She said the reason why Claire had not been sent home with any medication is because she is under a different surgeon to me. So weird as we are under the same team.

She said for me to take the fastabs till they are finished and then take normal multi vitamin and minerals for life. B12 injection every 3 month for life.
She said that all areas are different and that i will be given regular blood tests to make sure iv not got any deficiency in anything and if i do then i will be prescribed whatever i need then. She said taking to many vitamins is not good so they dont advise it in my area.

Its shocking how areas differ..she said for me not to worry and im doing well and she will see me in clinic in April. So i dont know, at least iv checked it out and feel better now. xxxx

Charm... have you had a reduction in your Lansoprazole after 6 months? Are you still on Selanese Oral Solution?

Love and hugs and hope you are well Charm, it's a great operation in my opinion... once I can shake this tiredness... I'll feel much better. xxx

Hi Bev, I still take 2 Lansoprazole a day have been told to cut it down to 1 after a year. I take 2 Calcichew and 1 Forceval. The Zinc and Selennium i was told are for hair loss ive not taken them, i do have some hair loss but im lucky to have thick hair. I was taken of the iron tablets because normal level for iron is between 5 - 148 mine is 251 i will get another blood test done in 6 months so it may change again then. I also felt very tired but since getting the B12 jabs (just had 2nd one done) i feel a lot better.

andrea, the fastabs are not vitamins though, if you get an ulcer near one of the joins, youll be in big trouble, thats why we NEED the fastabs or the other version of them, to avoid ulcers in the first place, i think you need to make an appt with your gp and ask him for them, most teams also reccomend forceval, as they have the right amount of vits that we need. the calcichews are to make sure we have enough calcium for our bones. i think that considering most surgeons reccommend that we take the same things, there must be summat in it. i would definately look into it, and take if further, its like the b12 too, that takes away a lot of tiredness that we have, i can tell when im due for mine. please see your gp huni. big hugs xxx

Thank you Dawny, iv still not taken my hospital letter to my Gp so i do need to make an appointment with her. Ill go next week.

Just the thought of not having a tab that will help something so dreadful not happen is terrible.
What if my gp wont prescribe them?
Whats upsetting is that we have all had the same op so why would some of us not be offered the correct meds.
Iv still got 2 weeks supply left and i shall go see the doc.

Should i tell her that iv been advised to have them put on repeat prescription are what? Not sure what to say to her really. Ill try for the vitamins too as every little helps.

Thanks Dawny, im not happy with this and if it wasnt for you all i would not have known...i just love this site and you all. xxxx

andrea, just ask her if you can have the fastabs on repeat, dont mention about not being told to have them, and also, list the other things too, just tell her you need them all on repeat. most gps dont know much about bypass surgery, so tend to rely on you to inform them, you also need to arrange to have b12 injections every 3 months, . big hugs xx

Thanks Dawny, its a joke this. Will it tell me in my gp discharge letter if i look at it.
I would love to know what the others on the site have been told...i might do another thread out of interest.

Iv just text Claire(nothing to like anymore) as she wasnt even sent out of hospital with any fastabs and we are under the same team but different surgeons....disgusting. xxxx

Go to the first post on the thread Andrea.
Go into edit, then advanced and then edit and save.

Just left you a message about the bmi and ticker on the Llandudno thread Angel.

Have you been told not to take them Andrea?

Love and hugs xxx

Well I don't know Andrea.

It's the first time I've heard that one...

See how it goes... I can't believe how much guidance is varying from one area to another...

We'll keep thinking about it Andrea... and it won't do any harm to tell your Specialist about us... and what we are having. I certainly would be asking.

Love you precious xxx

That's shocking! As a bypassed you should be taking the following for life as a minimum -

Lanzoprazole fastabs once daily
Calcichew twice daily
Forceval once daily
Ferrous fumerate sugar free syrup daily
Vitamin B12 injections every 3 months

By not taking them you are risking serious health problems through deficiency such as osteoperosis, pernicious anaemia, anaemia, psychosis, nerve damage and ulceration of surgical joints.

I should be taking omeprozole (which is the same family as lanzoprozole) but all my symptoms have dissappeared.

I take a multi vit daily & an additional zinc

I already take a calcium suppliment called adcal as I'm going thru early menopause

My vitamin B12 injections start 3 month post op

And my iron levels are monitored and they are sufficient.

Andrea called our dietician who said it's a personal choice of every surgeon. I'm sure if they saw it fit we would be on them. Like every pre op, post op diet even to how the surgery is performed can vary.

I am monitored every 3 months with blood tests so I'm sure if any thing crops up they will medicate me accordingly.

Andrea, don't panic, I know this has upset u all day. We will both call our specialist nurse & dietician 2moro. Were 2 weeks post op, if we need them we can start taking them now it's not too late.

I will call you 2moro xxx

with the fastabs/omeprazole, its prevention rather than cure, cos we have a tendency towards getting ulcers around the stomas that we have and around the staples, so they give us them to stop any from forming, i havent heard of anybody not having them up until now. but i think you need to speak to either your team or gp.

Andrea, I had my op with Mr Ammori so am pretty much the same as Bev and Charm:

PRESCRIBED:
Lanzoprazole fastabs twice daily for first few weeks progressing onto 2 x Lanzoprazole capsules daily.
Calcichew twice daily.
Forceval once daily (you can use Bassets Soft'n'Chewy for the first few weeks until you feel able to swallow the forceval)
Ferrous sulphate iron tablets x 2 daily (I've never taken these as I get really constipated if I have too much iron - my recent blood tests show my iron levels are fine without them)
Vitamin B12 injections every 3 months

RECOMMENDED BUT NOT PRESCRIBED:
Zinc in soluble form (solvazinc), 3 tablets daily (I only take one a day now as hair is ok and will probably come off these in a few months)

OTHER STUFF I TAKE/USE:
Silica complex x 1 daily
Biotin x 1 daily
Kerastase shampoo
I take/use these in place of Selenium which helps the hair.

Andrea, I really hope you get this sorted out as the prescribed items are vital. Please keep us updated on how you get on.

This is such a good post, and has given me a kick up the bottom!
It's reminded me the importance of taking our tablets.
Especially as occasionally miss the lanzo ones.
I think it's hard just to fit them all in the day as there's so many!
I wanted to ask if anyone knows..
I take zinc 1/3 times a day and one tab of selenium.
Even taking these my hair is really really coming out.
Do taking these tablets actually help hairloss or does anyone take anything better???
Thanks
