Hi all, I am new here and just wanted people to know that i have been excepted for gastric banding..........YIPPEE.

I know it's not a quick fix and that it will take a lot of hard work and dedication from me to get rid of this weight that is holding me back, but i feel that if i am willing to put myself though surgery then i have to be dedicated enough to work with it. I would like to hear others experiances with this and the pros and cons with surgery.

i haven't got a date yet but will let you all know when i do, i haven't had my endoscopy yet either which they said i need so i will update you all on that too.

One last thing is, i want to say thanks to Taz for all the help and support she has given me over the years, you are a true friend Taz thanks. xx

Aw thanks Kat. I will always support you and I know you would do the same for me. Although we are on very different journey's our struggles are the same and I wish you all the best with your surgery. I can't wait til we can go shopping together for smaller wardrobes!

I hope you find the support on here like I did, this place is great! xx

hi - am brand new here myself. Am currently waiting for my local PCT (primary care trust) to let me know if they will give me funding. My doctor and consultant have all said I meet the NICE criterea and am suitable for surgery. My doc requested funding on the 9th May - I am waiting for the postman everyday now. How long did it take for you to get the approved funding. Thanks Caroline x

i live in Bolton. I find myself researching endlessly for surgery details - there are so many different points of view. What do you think of Fern Britton "outing" herself. Really makes me mad when people say surgery is "the easy way out" do they have any idea what it involves. Do you feel nervous about your op??

Hi Emma, I see you are in Kent. How did you mange to get to see Mr somers in chicester? do you get to choose with the nhs? im going to see my gp soon to ask for funding. QWould be nice to know my options.

still undecided yet - think i would prefer the bypass - even though it is a more intrusive op. Research says it gives better and faster ops (is that right??) also I think the to-ing and fro-ing for band adjustments plus the difficulty it getting the right fit would get me down a bit. What do you think?

Hi and welcome
I was originally going for the band but did lots of research on here and other websites specifically for surgical weight loss and I decided that the bypass was the better option for me as I had a sweet tooth too. Your consultant will go through it all with you though and advise you which one he suggests is better for you.

At my consultation there was a couple of questionnaires to fill out and that gave them the best idea of which op would be best for you.

If you need any help just shout xx

http://www.sweetim.com/s.asp?im=gen&ref=10 i didnt actually get to choose this is what happened...i went to see a surgeon in tonbridge wells and he agreed i needed the bypass which he only preforms privately,he was going to refer me to his collegue but the hospital was all over the news as being riddled with mrsa,my gp then referred it back to the pct who looked into me seeing a surgeon that specialises in bypass surgery as obviously its the safer option,i have a very high bmi so its very risky,i then got a letter from pct saying they had referred me to shaw somers,i hadn't really heard of him until then when i thuroughly researched him and realised how lucky i was as its nearly 200 miles away from where i actually live.i know some hospitals to the new choose and book system so you may be lucky enough to choose. http://www.sweetim.com/s.asp?im=gen&ref=10

hi nic - where did you have your surgery.

I notice you live in Chorley from one of your previous posts - I live in Blackrod, Would love to have some local I could chat to about what a lot of people think of as a taboo subject.

How long did it take for your PCT to give approval of funding once your doctor had asked for it??

i agree with nic i think the surgeon will probably decide with you which is the best option but for me the bypass was right as i too have a sweet tooth and can chomp on choccy till i feel sick http://www.sweetim.com/s.asp?im=gen&ref=10the banding from what i was told from my surgeon works best on people that eat too big a dinner and are never satisfied where as the bypass stops the sweet tooth from gorging as it makes you very ill. http://www.sweetim.com/s.asp?im=gen&ref=10

Thanks nic - will send you an e-mail in a bit. Don't really use msn am totally new to all this chattin on line - so will send you a traditional e-mail with "my story".

Which PCT do you come under. I am under Bolton - but will be (fingers crossed) having my surgery at Hope Hospital. Have you heard of anyone that has had their op there - if so how did it go??

Can I be really nosey and ask what your weight is (or how much you hope to loose) - tell me to bog of if it is too personal - I understand. I am around 16 stone so hoping to loose about 5 or 6 stone - would love to know how long it will take for the weight to come off.

Thanks Caroline x x x:)
