Gastric band tragedy of 24 stone grandmother who was keen to get fit | Mail Online

Not what I wanted to come accross when he is going to be my surgeon, did anyone else have these worries!!

7 out of his 1500 died, omg:sigh:

having major surgery, altho self elected is the final throw of the dice for us, and looking at his numbers that's a 1 in 200 chance of pegging it....not bad odds, but let's remember, alot of these people would have had serious underlying health problems that didn't help, yes it is a risk but the benefits far outweigh the risks of the op

My surgeon told me the risk of morbidity is 1 in 200, compared with 1 in 20 for bowel surgery;)
People can die from all sots of surgery, so you have to weigh up how long you can carry on as you are with the minimal risk that you could die.I had no qualms at all:D
PS Roger Ackroyd was on the news last week ,speaking about the increase in WLS and he is gawguss:p

Things do go wrong and you would be a fool if you tried to pretend they don't. Any type of surgery is risky and none more than this, (especially on the side of the aneasthetic). But you should all be well aware of the risks before you walk into that theatre and what to watch out for post op too, especially if you are a member here, there is more than enough info on this forum.

I'm not going to say the normal stuff like the survival stats for this op are taken in the states and also take into consideration those that are thirty stone plus, but I will say that you wouldn't be normal if you didn't worry about things like this pre-op.

I think every single one of us have had that worry at the back of our mind.... How is this going to hurt our families if we don't make it etc. But the reality is for many of us we are slowly dying anyway and this op is the last resort.

Please don't close your eyes and ears to what can go wrong. Take it in and learn by it, the more you know about the downside, the more you can make sure you stay healthy and safe. Forewarned is forearmed or so they say.

Before you panic too much...remember that you must always go with your instincts...If after surgery you feel something is not right, stand your ground...and if you can't do that for yourself, get a member of your family to air your concerns.

There have been others threads about knowing when something is wrong...pain is there for a reason, to warn us that something is wrong and after any surgery we are going to be in pain but there are always or nearly always other indicators that something is not quite right.

You will probably never know the whole story...for all we know this poor lady might have been a bit stoic and not complained about her pain or how she was feeling...this is important.

Of course this does not let the hospital off the hook and I would hope that this gets investigated thoroughly.

I won't hurt you to ring the bariatric department at your hospital to ask any questions you need to about this...they should be able to either put your mind at rest or offer you an alternative.

You must be so worried right now, and I can understand this...but if you cross all the t's and dot all the i's now you will be a lot more positive about your surgery.

All the very best

(((hugs)))

I think this surgeons stats work out about 1 in 214.

Any article like that worries me :(

I'm scared of dying through surgery, but I'm more scared of how unhealthy I will end up soon.

There is no way any story will put me off, I know the risks and I'm prepared to take the risk :)

xxx

Yes your right im being silly its perfectly normal to worry to an extent before an op but uve all made me see that the risk is very small and lower than a lot of surgery ppl have without even thinking twice.

Love u all loads ur gr8!!
x

I dont think anyone on here will think you're being silly, we all have and will at some point got scared.
As you said its perfectly normal to worry and its better typing it on here and getting some reassurance than keeping it bottled in till you change your mind about surgery.

Glad your feeling better about it.

I for one will be cacking it the day I have to go in lol. So that parts yet to come :) Your not on your own so dont feel silly:D

thanks didi u have really made me feel a bit better about it, thanks a lot hun just initial panicking lol

Now take a deep breath and calm down. There is a risk with any surgery no matter what surgery you have. I was nearly 34 stone when i had my op and i am 49 (keep it to yourself lol) i had no problems i did not have your surgeon but try not to worry too much. janey;);)

maths was never my forte!! but i wasn't far out, i should've put 1 in 200 (ish!!)

You will find a sad/horror story behind everything. I also think that when you are going through something all of a sudden cases of it going wrong etc seem to be endless on the TV in the papers. But I believe that its just because we become more sensitive to it.

I really do understand your concern, I have a young child and I'm terrified of things going wrong. But then I think of what my health is like now (who said life begins at 40). My child is the reason for me doing this, because I need to stick around for a long time yet.

Your NOT being silly, I bet everyone on here has had these moments.

Thanks so much girls, I think its more excitement now just tinged with nerves lol !! 25 days to go woooo

Hi pink daisy (I like your name)

I am having my bypass on Thursday at 9 am I am not worried yet, I had a gyny op on 1st June no problem and have had about 5 others appendics gyny stuff.

I know ill be ok (hope so any how)

but ......... I have thought at least 6 times to day what if I die, how will my husband explain it etc etc
...what if I am awake.. etc etc.

It natural to fear the operation .....It’s the fear of the unknown

I believe that if you are in the best health you can be before a surgery if the surgeon is not a hack you should be ok just don’t fib about any health concerns to the anesthetists

my ritual for before being put asleep is to say my kids names over and over again it calms me ...

I want to be around for my kids... I want to have a better quality of life and I want to feel attractive again, I can’t loose the weight normally ive tried and failed and got heavier …....Like most of us on here so if I want to do some thing about my weight before it kills me its band or bypass.

Again feeling worried about dying is natural, do what you can to get healthier before your op, research your surgeon, (if you smoke stop that is a biggy)

And on Thursday about 9 am say a prayer for me just to be sure.
