Isn't it funny..

I was just sitting thinking how funny it is that the NHS send you on a weight management course to better our understanding of weight loss surgery to ensure we understand the changes etc - but if your bmi is over 50 you apparently don't need that information and just go straight through for surgery. I don't have a problem with that at all - I just wondered where the logic is in that method of thinking!

I think people with BMI's of over 50 are more high risk of having health related problems, so it needs tackling sooner. I have a BMI of over 50, so qualify straight to a seminar, but the Surgeon said I still need to be under them for at least 6 months until surgery happens! In June 2012 my BMI was 33.2 now it is 56.1, even tho I was obese at 33 I was much fitter and had no ailments...now unfortunately I suffer quite severe symptoms at times with a hernia and have to rely on a stick, as I damaged ligaments in my knee last October which haven't healed and unfortunately my lack of recovery is down to my weight!

Suffering like I have though this past year I believe that anyone with additional health problems should be referred straight away regardless of their BMI

I find it 'funny' how different areas can have different paths.

It's no surprise people can feel so confused by the whole process - so much stress on top of just feeling rubbish!!

Xx

Yeah I mean no offence to anyone at all and I understand that health risks are higher - I just mean someone at 46 BMI can have health complications and still have to do 12 months.

I agree with LL as well - all areas have different routes but yet all supposedly following the NICE guideline! Anyway - not complaining - just saying! I guess by educating us for a year it gives the nhs chance to catch up so to speak! Lol!

I think it's unfortunate that the 'rules' just changed in April! I know the North East hospitals had a few teething problems and it's taken a few months to sort them out!

Have you got your date for Weight Management yet? Xx

Every area seems different. I had a BMI at 50 and was sent on the course, to loose weight before I could even think about the op on the NHS.

Hi Birdie
What surgery are you having done.

Me too, started with BMI of 65, now down to 59, and have multiple health problems but still having to do the 6 month weight management programme.

Hi Blondie!
I've already done the weight management side of thing I'm now en route to hopefully get surgery. Waiting for an MDT assessment - should be sept / oct time!

Willow - I'm going for the bypass - well still sometimes wonder about the sleeve - but mostly think bypass is the one for me!

How are you getting on?

Hi Birdie01
Has you know I got my phone call today. I am same as you, first it was the Sleeve, now I am thinking the Bypass.
Hope I know what I want, before I have to see that Surgeon again he will think I am a right plonker.

I just keep reading everybody's post, weighing up both of them.

Take Care
Elaine

I thought i was the only one who couldnt 100% decide straight away between sleeve and bypass. They both have risks, they both have benefits and disadvantages.. And both have sucess stories.. And both have complications and unhappy people after having them.. :) well i am sure the team will help to decide or lets say guide you towards the right decision.

Well I think it's ok ladies to be unsure.. I think when we speak to the surgeons they should be able to help choose which ever one they think is best! To be completely honest I would go for either.

No I'm reading "weight loss surgery for dummies" book and in there is says the sleeve involves cutting away part of the stomach (which I knew) but didn't realise it's the part that produced hunger hormones! So that's an added benefit of not being hungry all the time! :) but I also know it comes back about 18 months down the line and with a bypass you're restricted from day one - no turning back - that appeals to me the most! :)

Hi Llora and Birdie01
Thanks again Birdie, just bought the book you are now reading.

Hi Llora
Just read your threads, been noisy to see which one you had chosen. How are you getting on, and have you had your op yet or are you still waiting.
After reading lots of threads on here, everyone's journey is different, also areas.

What frightens me the most about the bypass, is quite a few people cart eat or don't want no food, then some of them have had to have the peg in to feed them. My Mother in law had a peg, due to having MND and I wouldn't like to think I was going through the op, to help me loose my weight and be happier about myself, then have a peg.
I have seen all the complications of a peg, tube etc, also the thought of injections for the rest of my life.
But has Birdie01 said "eighteen month down the line, you get your hunger pains back" with the Sleeve, and I wouldn't want to be where I am today again, so this needs more control.

But having said all this, there are thousands who have had the bypass, and are really very pleased with it, also the Sleeve and they have kept the weight off.

Not sure now I know I can have the operation, I am over thinking this.

Best Wishes
Elaine

Nope, did not have my surgery yet.

I was thinking in a very similar way... I would pick sleeve, but i am afraid i will regain weight after two years.. (But that is possible with bypass too..) and i have so much to loose.. Also i have diabetes so they do say bypass is 'the golden standard procedure' to help with it.. futhermore they have been doing bypass longer.. And have lots more long term reasearch about it. Which gives more reassurance that if something goes bad they would know how to fix the problems..but malabsorbtion of nutriens.. When i am so young.. I will want to have a healthy baby (or few) in the future.. So i am
Really worried about that aspect.

Dietitian and bariatric nurse during appointments with them told that i would be suitable for both procedures and would benefit from both.. So that didnt help for making my mind up.

But i trust the faith. So whichever way i will end up! It will be the better one for me. (I am sure the team will decide if i still am undecided and happy with either one and i will trust them as their are specialists.)

I think i am overthinking it too. But how can i not? When my whole future and life will be affected by this decision..

Some of you will this this is mad but I believe in fate and to make important decisions when I'm uncertain I toss a coin. Heads you do it tails you don't. I was nervous about surgery, I tossed a coin, heads, I booked my consultation and was agreed for a sleeve. I am now so positive about my upcoming sleeve and know it's the right choice for me. As I say it might sound daft but in the face of all else let fate decide which you have. Heads a sleeve tails a bypass. Also if you don't like the decision the coins tells you then you know that really you have already decided...decision made!

Totally agree very good idea, Karr I will give it a go. I will let you know what happens.

Also good luck with your operation.
