Rejecting, NHS choices and PCT's

I enquired about WLS a few years back and was told that as our PCT requires a BMI of 60, that my BMI of 50 wouldn't qualify because i have no significant illnesses (except chronic asthma and depression but they don't count that) I was offered no alternatives and just told to get on with it basically. Well 4 years on, my BMI is still around 50, i'm more miserable then ever, tried everything and nothing works. My main issue is the depression and anxiety, which drs have said stems from lack of self eesteem and confidence which comes from the weight/food issues.
My cousin is due to give birth any day now and with the NHS choices thing she has opted to give birth in a hospital outside our PCT, we live on the border of 2 so its not so far away. This hospital specialises in weight loss surgery and i've been advised that if i ask to be refered to this hospital then i fall under their criteria which are the NICE guidelines of 40 in which case i may have a shot.
I no its a long journey and i've not even begun it but i feel i have run out of options, i can't be fat and happy, i can't fix myself at this weight and i need help. Even though its a glimmer of hope, its still hope.

Has anyone else been refered to a hospital outside their PCT and been successful in getting funding? do you think i have a shot?

Hi Mii,

I'm not sure that you're going to like what I'm going to say here............

The place you have your treatment does not influence the funding of the treatment even under the NHS Choices scheme. The whole point of Choices is that you can choose where your treatment takes place but it is still funded by the PCT where you live.

Therefore, if you don't fulfil the funding criteria for your PCT, you won't be able to choose to be treated out of area to be funded by the PCT in that area as you don't live there.

As it is a few years since you enquired about funding in your area the criteria may have changed - or your health may have changed to include co-morbidities that will allow funding for a lower BMI than previously (perhaps your BP or diabetes?)

Good luck for your enquiries,

Tatiana

Hi Mii, Tatiana is correct (I work for a pct). sorry it's not the best news, but again as Tatiana suggests, go back to your GP for a further assessment. All PCT's have their own referral criteria for this type of treatment, and it can change over time. definitely worth another go. good luck and let us know how you get on. take care xxx

You are a star!!!

I told my surgeon yesterday that I have a prolapse (11 lb 14 oz baby lol), two tummy hernias and gallstones. I have been told I need to get to under 17st to have the ops to remove and repair. I thought it probably wouldnt be of use. But now I realise it may be the things that can help me.

Thank you!!

Mii, I really hope you find a way in soon xxx

Hi Mii, I have to agree that insisting on someone having a BMI of 60 before funding will be considered does seem ridiculously high, and it is probably worth checking back with your GP as the situation may well have changed.

Hi,

Am i right in thinking if you find a criteria which fits you ,then find a GP in that area and register will you not come under their PCT then?

Well I expect you would have to move into the GP practice catchment area, but in theory that should work.

You would have to provide the GP with proof that you can register at their practice - usually utility bills or tenancy agreement for an address in their catchment area.

I know getting funding is difficult but we can't expect to be able to try and side step the rules in place.
