mirena o/t

My best friend has just had one and her periods were bout 10 days long and very heavy now 3 months on and they have disappeared but i have know people who the coil messed things up for nearly a year.
I was sick and tired of having periods so i have the implant it was put in with a local jab and painless except for a bruise for a week on my arm.
My periods stopped after 6 weeks :):) and they said its fab for people who want to protect themselves and then as soon as u want to try for a bubs then its taken out again with a local anaesthetic and ur periods and fertility return back to normal by your next period.
I luv having no periods and no pmt :):):)

I had one put in because of bleeding constantly, had it put in at the same time as they were inside of me with scopes checking things out and d&c'ing me.
I was told that because the hormones worked locally then I wouldnt get the usual side effects of the pill (makes me VERY ill) but I did, it was horrible.
I was in severe pain and something went wrong.
I went to a&e and they said no its fine, saw a colleague of my gynae and they said no its fine and I finally called my gynae and asked her could I come in and have her remove it.
I went in, went into a side room and she pulled it out very easily with a comment of "hhmmmm, that was fitted very low".
I had been bleeding severley with it and was losing fleshy clots that were 3-4" long...it took a couple of weeks and I went back to my usual every day flow.
Eventually went on the pill again to try it and it almost ended my marriage because of the character changes it induced.
Came off of that and now havent had any periods at all for a good 7-8 months.
That isnt unusual for me though, I go through times when it can last a whole year + and then stop for years on end, its really weird and all that they can say is that when I lose lots of weight my pcos will improve and so should my bizarre periods.
But I will NEVER have the mirena coil ever again.
Steph xx

I've had mine for 5 years and am having it replaced next week (they need changing every 5 years) don't need it for contraception as OH has been snipped, but it's fantastic for period problems.

it can take a while to settle down, but I can't remember the last time I had a period and certainly don't want to go back to having all the pain that goes along with TOTM.

I've not noticed any weight issues with the coil :)

There shouldn't be any weight problems with the Mirena Coil as the hormone that it releases is so localised to the area that it's needed.

Having said that, I have put on weight since I had it. Whether I can blame that on the coil or just me I don't know.

Whenever I get period pain I just remind myself that the operation will cause me a lot more pain and it puts it into perspective!!
trouble being he will do op once i keep getting all the time.xx

O.K. ladies I've had mine almost 9 yes 9 years!! I've never used it for contraception but for v. heavy periods. It's fantastic. I know that it's about time I had it removed and I will to that this year. I'm hoping that I've sailed thru' the menopause and not noticed. How likely is that!!??

I have one. It has changed my life!!!

I was part of the hospital trials for it and I am on my second. I wouldn't part with it.

If you are the right age, yes you can go through the menopause...try coming off of it for a month and see if you get flashes...

Be careful as you could be peri-menopausal and still become pregnant during this phase.

I am contemplating having the coil put in!

I have had the implant for 1 year and 8 months and now the Doctors think it has stopped working! Although they say it should last 3 years, this does not apply to obese women, and the more obese you are, the shorter time it will last. I havent had any regular periods since I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism when I was 16 (now 22) and all of a sudden I am bleeding again - 3 months in a row! Now the makers are running scared that it doesn't work on obese people for very long and I am terrified I could get pregnant! There is no test to see if it is working or not, they just GUESS!!!

I have an appointment next week at a local Family Planning Centre to have it taken out and either replaced or have a coil put in.

((PS. OMG - I have just realised that everytime I have had any prolonged and heavy bleeding (once every 6 months or so) it has cooincided with drastic attempts to loose weight. I can't believe I never made the connection before! Maybe the coil will be better for me as I have my bypass in 6 weeks!))

Im 2 years into my second one. Liz my GP told me as the progesterone is localised and not circulating throughout your body it does not make you gain weight. How true that is I cannot say. I would defo recommend!

I was told exactly the same...but told that any initial weight gain was going to be minuscule.
