Pain relief

I am allergic to most pain relief that is commonly used ie asprin Ibuprofen Codeine and dihydrocodeine the only thing I can take paracetamol I have a oretty high pain threshold and take about 2 tablets a year for the very occasional headache, will this be enough pain relief for me if I get it in liquid form?

I had tramadol by drip and then paracetamol. I didn't find my op that painful tbh x

my best mate is allergic to pretty much everything in the ibuprofen / codeine family too. she is ok with oramorph (only given in hospital) and sometimes ok with diclophenic (spelling?) which is an anti inflammatory.... the hospitals have a lot of drugs they can use and depending on the reaction (eg sickness) then they can give extra to cope with side effects.

I think a lot of pain depends on your expectation of pain, so having a positive mental attitude and knowing you are going through something for the right reasons makes all the difference. good luck and speak to your team - they will want to do everything they can to keep you comfortable xxx

I am hoping that I won't need anything as I'm well 'ard I had my bottom jaw shortened my top jaw lengthened and my face shortened in an 8 hour op and used the self administered morphine pump once, the nurse actually thought it had broken when she saw only 1 use registered So fingers crossed I don't need too much for this op.

I just don't feel pain very much, my fella is always asking me where I got this or that bruise from, I'm clueless lol.

I think Butterfly, that if you coped with all that you shouldn't worry about this op. Yes, as tea lover says, I too had very little pain from my bypass but had IV paracetamol for the first 24hrs. I had two ops done at the same time, and the little pain I was in was not related to the WLS. They sent me home with enough disolvable painkillers for an army. I haven't touched them. I am sure the hospital will give you what is appropriate x

I had a band rather than a bypass, but I was sent home with tramadol and paracetamol (though they did give me morphine after the op). I used paracetamol for a couple of days but that was all I needed.
Judging by your past experience I hope the op will be a breeze for you x

I had one dose of paracetamol post op in hospital. That was it. You should be fine.

Ditto on the analgesic allergies. I was offered morphine but didn't use the pump at all. On day two I was given intravenous paracetamol every 4 hours and day 3 soluble paracetamol ...yuck. Since leaving the hospital I have not taken anything for pain. Yes I'm tender but its not an unbearable pain.

I'm a big pansy about pain, and all I've taken since release is a few paracetamol caplets (halved) and the odd codeine pill. But the codeine is for a flare up of a trapped nerve in my hip, not op pain at all. You'll be fine I'm sure.

Pethidine all the way for me, injected into my thighs. I even had one for the road just before being discharged

Took it as I needed over the next fortnight.

I don't get on with morphine it makes me sick, but iv paracetamol is the best thing in the world, that really works for me, I am sure they will prescribe that for you, people dismiss it as its usually an over the counter drug but the iv version is brilliant!
