Problems - if going private

Caren

Love my sleeve!!
hello everyone, ive been reading about sarah and her need to be stretched and lots of other problems. It seems to be ok if you are nhs, but what if you have problems when going private, do they operate again for free? what happens?

I haven't read this, where is it Caren?
Lynne x

I think that my provider said that complications would be sorted out by the surgeon free of charge. At least I hope that's what she said lol. Fingers crossed I have no complications and don't need to find out:)

so far so good minxie lol lets hope it stays that way.
I guess its a question i have to ask when i go for my consultation

OOOOH Caren, Have I missed a thread? I didn't know you had decided to go private ... :jelous: I though you were starting out on the NHS route. Good luck either way, though sweetie. :D:D:D

Thanks twinkle lol. well i started out going private, my mum is going to sell her garage to pay for it, i know, what a lovely mum :) but it seems that she may only get 6 or 7 grand for it which is not enough :( so im relying on winning the lottery :D
Been to my doc and have an appointment with the dietitian in november :sigh: so that could be years :( so its back to the lottery lol :8855:

Oh Caren, I have never asked so do not know, but do they not have payment plans for these op's? You could maybe put a large deposit down & pay the rest monthly??? or not. I am sure someone on here would know. Hope so, honey :)
Also, to Lynne, This is the post Caren read re Sarah having to be stretched (pardon the phrasing) :D:D

Hi everyone, i thought i'd share my experience with you all, i've posted this on the walsall massive thread but i think it's worth sharing with everyone.

As most of you know, i've been having problems with getting food and drink down. 2 tsps was my limit at best. So i took advise from many of you on here and rang Mr Khans(my consultant) secretary on wednesday last week and within 24hrs i'd got an appointment to go to the friday clinic at 11am. I was so relieved that finally i'd get some answers.
Mr Khan was as lovely as ever and was very concerned about my fluid intake, so there and then he sent me to endoscopy. Panic set in...Don't they send me an appointment throught the post for this???? No was the answer to that and within half an hour i was sedated and lying on my side with the camera down my throat, Absolutely vile!!!!
When i had returned to the land of the living they told me that they couldn't do the stretch because the opening to the stomach had completely closed (due to scar tissue) and that this was very uncommon.
I was admitted to ward 12 and Mr Khan was notified of the findings. I was worried sick and wondering what they were going to do
Mr Khan sent a request down to ward 12 asking for me to have a scan, the one where you have to drink that nasty liquid, it showed that i had a trickle of fluid going through to my stomach.
Mr Khan came to see me on the saturday lunch time and explained what he was going to do. I would be going down to theatre on sunday morning to try the stretch again but if it didn't work he would re open my wound and cut a new incision at the neck of the stomach....Please god i thought, don't open me up again.
Sunday morning they were there at 8am ready to take me to theatre, i had my fingers crossed that all would go my way and i'm pleased to say it did .
They found the tiny hole and managed to strech it. I came home yesterday (monday) and although abit offish i can feel the improvement already. I managed 6 tbls of soup earlier, which is a miracle.
Thanks so much to all of you for your support and guidance. The last few weeks have been hell and i wouldn't have got through it without you all.
Trust your instints and don't let people fob you off x x x

Great point Caren, you should get the aftercare policy in writing before you make a final decision. This should include what happens in the event of complications post op. I have heard the NHS is loath to clean up after private work so this really is an important point x

well this is what im worried about Karlos, you never know whats going to happen, im guessing the nhs would be loathe to help if there are any problems, but, on the other hand, going private is saving them a lot of money!!

I know but they don't see it that way and to be honest with aftercare it could cost them a lot more to fix it than it might have done to do it in the first place. I've heard rumours that they have refused to treat private WLS patients but never first hand.

That's why it’s really important that you get the aftercare details in writing from your provider and I'd get my GP to check it for me before I paid the fees

jeeeez why can i just eat normally! :(

Hey don't be down.....what's normal anyway?!;)

Caren, don't know if you've checked the website but WLS group who I used have an option of surgery in Belgium which is cheaper than UK by about £1k and all follow up care in UK with everyone else. Just a thought.

their follow up care is in the uk?

THIS is the reason why i am scared of going abroad for surgery. The NHS could wash their hands of me if i had complications, and i could potentially end up having to return to my provider, wherever that may be. So nearer is best, imho. CB in the Czech republic is a nightmare to get to from Devon, Belgium is better, but Taunton or Plymouth Nuffield is just up or down the road. Maybe i will have to go with them after all. But its soooo expensive, :sigh::sigh::sigh:

Thanks for this thread Caren!

yes thats why i dont think i'll travel abroad, but im worried about complications even if the surgery is here, but done private. I dont want to wait for years and then maybe be refused funding! GGRRRR
I just want it done, and get help if i have problems :(

Hi Caren, Do you know your PCT's guidelines? If so, do you fall within them? I guess you must or you would not be seeing a dietician in Nov, but does seeing her guarantee funding? I was only told I was on the waiting list after seeing the surgeon. It is a long time to wait, I agree, but taking the private route unless you have lots of money is a bit risky. It is the aftercare that is the sticking point for all but the NHS. Does anyone know if you can take out an insurance to cover any aftercare, should it be needed? I don't know enough about the private route to advise you but am sure lots of peeps on here do. I wish I had a magic wand to help you, hunnie , but after nearly 2 years of waiting myself, I know there is no quick route unless you do go private ... back to square one & on & on ...
:(:sigh::(:sigh:

hey twink, my pct use the NICE guidelines and no i dont fit the criteria :( best go to the shop for more scratchcards lol

I so hope you get sorted soon honey, its been a long time for you xxx

:(:( Never mind, you will get there one way or another ... you could move to a more friendly PCT area :D:D:D My bright ideas are decidedly dim & getting dimmer by the day.

I went private n had issues n they operated on me again free of charge as they caused the issues xx
